第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
I have been a student at Bentley College in Waltham for some time now, so I have a lot of experience and know how things work at Bentley. As a freshman(新生)at Bentley College you will be living in the Tree Dorms, Slade Hall or Miller Hall. I would highly suggest that you choose to live in the Tree Dorms because this is where most fresh-men are going to be living. There will be a lot of activities going on in the building and you will meet lots of people. Slade Hall is next to the parking lot and not far from the Tree Dorms, so that would be your second choice. As Miller Hall is small and far away, it would be my last choice for freshmen housing. If Bentley offers you the chance to live with second or third year students you’d better refuse their offer and live with freshmen. Living with your classmates will make the transition (过渡) into college life a lot easier.
As a freshman your classes should be easy. After freshman year your classes will become a lot more difficult, so I advise that you get down to business early in the first year. There are two very easy things you can do to increase your knowledge as a freshman. The first is to just go to class and the second is to always do your homework. I also highly advise that you do it on your own and try to stay disciplined. It is too easy to put your homework away and then get really behind and not be able to learn everything before a mid-term or final exam.
56. The author advises freshmen to live in the Tree Dorms because ___________.
A. it is across the parking lot from Slade Hall
B. it is small and quite far away from the playground
C. there are many second and third year students there
D. there are many freshmen and more activities
57. Where is Slade Hall?
A. Near Miller Hall. B. Far from Tree Dorms.
C. Beside the car park. D. Near the classrooms.
58. According to the author, how can freshmen improve knowledge?
A. Remember to do homework by discussing it with others.
B. Finish homework and go to class every day.
C. Try to spend more time in the library.
D. Be able to learn something before a mid-term or final exam.
59. The author writes the passage to ___________.
A. tell new students how to get used to college life
B. tell new students about their teachers and dormitory
C. show the differences between college and high school
D. tell readers about some funny things at Bentley College

Nick Campbell sat at the side of the road and wondered what to do next. He looked at the second-hand Harley Davidson he’d bought from a back-street garage back home in Miami at the beginning of his trip six weeks before.
For years he had dreams of crossing the United States from east to west by motorbike and he’d finally decided that it was now or never. He’d given up his job, sold his car and set off for the journey of his dreams. He’d been lucky, or so he thought, to find this old Harley Davidson and had bought it for a very reasonable price------it had cost him just $600. But five kilometers from Atlanta, he had run out of luck. The motorbike had broken down.
He pushed the bike into town and found a garage. The young mechanic told him to leave the bike overnight and come back the next day. The following morning, to his surprise, the man asked if the bike was for sale. “Certainly not,” he replied, paid his bill and hit the road.
When he got to Kansas the old machine ran out of steam again. This time Nick thought about selling it and buying something more reliable, but decided to carry on. When the bike was going well, he loved it.
However, in Denver, Colorado the bike broke down again so he decided to take it to a garage and offer it for sale. The mechanic told him to come back in the morning.
The next day, to his amazement, the man offered him $2,000. Realizing the man must be soft in the head, but clearly not short of money, Nick asked for $ 3,000. The man agreed and they signed the papers. Then the mechanic started laughing. In fact it was several minutes before he could speak and when he could he said, “That’s the worst deal you’ll ever make, boy.”
He removed the seat. On the underside was the inscription (铭文):
“To Elvis, love James Dean.”
60. Harley Davidson here refers to a _________.
A. car B. truck C. garage D. motorbike
61. Which of the following did Nick value most?
A. Harley Davidson. B. His job. C. His dream to travel. D. His car.
62. The underlined word in the 6th paragraph is closest in meaning to_________.
A. clever B. crazy C. honest D. kind
63. At the end of the story, Nick must have felt very __________.
A. sorry B. happy C. excited D. moved
C
I made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.
The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed”, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
“What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with sadness, “Do you know something I don’t?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing.
“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”
64. From the story we may infer that Tom drove to the beach cottage ______.
A. with his family B. with Evelyn
C. alone D. with his children
65. During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because ______.
A. he decided to be a good husband
B. he had made a lot of money in his Wall Street firm
C. she looked lovely in her new clothes
D. the doctor said his wife was seriously ill
66. The author says, “There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment.” What does “one thing” refer to?
A. He praised her sweater, which puzzled her.
B. She insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated.
C. He knew something about her illness but didn’t tell her.
D. He was so good to her that she thought she must be dying.
67. By saying “I’m just starting to live,” Tom means that ______.
A. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life
B. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husband
C. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change
D. he is beginning to feel regret for what he did to his wife before

Everyone talks about the greenhouse effect(温室效应) and how our Earth and its climate are being affected. We can do a science experiment designed by some kids to show this effect and what is happening to the Earth.
First prepare the following items:
●2 glass containers(容器) that need to be the same size and shape
●1 gallon plastic bag
●4 cups of very cold water
●Ice cubes
Fill each container with two cups of cold water. Add the same amount of ice cubes to each container. Then put one of the containers in the plastic bag and close it tight. Put both containers in the sun together and keep them there for at least an
hour.
At the end of one hour remove the container from the plastic bag and immediately check the temperature of the water. After you record this, find out the temperature of the water that is not covered.
When you place the containers in direct sunlight, the air inside the bag becomes very warm. The heat filters (渗入) in but cannot escape so it stays in the closed plastic bag and increases the temperature. What if you leave that for two, three or four hours?
Think about what is happening to the Earth. There are chemicals that are creating a type of plastic bag around the Earth. It causes our air to get warmer because of the heat from the sun being kept in this closed area.
Think about your car in the hot summer. This is what happens when you leave your car outside all day. This greenhouse effect has caused your car to be so hot that you sometimes cannot even touch the steering wheel.
This science project goes to show what affects our planet.
72. According to the text, the greenhouse effect appears mainly because of ________.

d. Put one container in a plastic bag and close it tight.
e. Put the two containers in the sun for at least one hour.
f. Measure the water which is covered with a plastic bag.
A. b e d c a f B. b c d e f a C. b c e d a f D. b e c d f a
74. The writer mentions a car on a hot summer day to _______.
A. tell us about the hot weather in summer
B. prove the science project is correct
C. show the effects of the greenhouse effect
D. tell us how to protect cars during summer
75. If the story appears in a newspaper, the best title might be "________".

When you arrive, I'll pick you up at the airport. You can stay at my home. We have a spare room and there is no need for you to book a hotel. We will hold a party for you, and delicious food will be served. The time together will certainly see us enjoy ourselves by singing and dancing.
Chongqing is famous for its beautiful river view, so riverside road is a must to see. I'll also show you around a few city squares here. One thing you cannot miss is the local food –Hot Pot ,spicy but really nice. I think you'll like it and have a good time here.
We are looking forward to your arrival.
Yours,
Li Hua
