■ To help students better understand “power of nature”
■ To help students learn to use some important words and expressions
■ To help students identify examples of the –ing form in the text
Focus
Words

Expressions
compare…with…, burn…to the ground, make one’s way, make an effort, glance through, vary from…to…,

Procedures
1. Warming up
⑴Warming up by learning about vocabulary
Hello, everyone. We shall read about volcanoes today. Everyday
disasters happen here and there. But how much do you know about them? Turn to page 93 and familiarize yourself with the words and expressions used in this unit. Try to make up a story based on the vocabulary, either in English or in Chinese.
⑵Warming up sharing knowledge
Nice to see you, class. Today we take Unit 5 The power of nature. We shall read about volcanoes. But first what do you know about volcanoes?
A volcano is a place on earth where lava comes from the ground. Volcanoes often have the same shape as mountains. Most volcanoes have a crater at the top.
How Volcanoes Are Made
Most volcanoes are made where tectonic plates come together. These plates move over each other, which causes magma to rise to the surface through weak places in the crust.
⑶ Warming up by getting to know about some of History's Worst Volcanic Eruptions
We hear of volcanic eruptions now and then. Some are mild, and some are terrible. Now look at the screen and listen to me telling you about some of History's Worst Volcanic Eruptions.
● Mount Vesuvius, in Italy, has erupted several times. The most
devastating of the eruptions occurred in A.D. 79, destroying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
● Indonesia's Krakatoa has erupted several times, with the last and most devastating eruption in 1883. The resulting tsunami killed more than 36,000 people in the area of Java and Sumatra.
● In 1963, Mount Agung in Bali erupted, taking the lives of some 1,100 people.
● On May 18, 1980, after more than 100 years of dormancy, Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington.
● The 1992 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines Islands caused 342 deaths; more than 250,000 people had to be evacuated.
2. Pre-reading by defining volcanology
If you are going to make volcanology as your career, you have to be sure about what volcanology is. How much do you know about it? Let’s go on to http://www.encyclopedia.com to find out its definition.
Volcanology is the study of volcanoes, lava, magma and related geological phenomena. A volcanologist is a person who studies in this field.
Volcanologists frequently visit volcanoes, especially active ones,
to observe volcanic eruptions, collect rock and lava samples. One major focus of enquiry is the prediction of eruptions; there is currently no accurate way to do this, but predicting eruptions, like predicting earthquakes, could save a lot of lives.
Being a volcanologist is one of the most dangerous scientific professions there is, because sudden eruptions can occur during the study of active volcanoes.
3. Reading
⑴Listening, reading and underlining
Turn to page 34. Read the text aloud while listening to its recording. Underline the expressions useful to you at the same time.
