Living in a foreign culture there are many times when I realize that my
perspective (观点) on life is drastically different from those Koreans I
interact (相互影响) with on a daily basis. This past week I have been greatly
challenged to change my perspective and here is why.
My dream in life is to become a doctor, one who changes the world.
But last week I opened an email from UBC that contained the words
“regrets”, no interview. I didn’t get an interview to medical school, thus
will not be entering school for September 2009. My immediate reaction
was one of extreme disappointment and anger—mostly directed at
myself for not working hard enough, for not seeking out the opportunities
necessary to have a good application, for simply not being good enough.
My mind was full of hopelessness and despair that left me with no desire to
further seek for the dream that I’ve held for quite a time now.
During the past week two things happened. At church our pastor
mentioned perspective in a section of his sermon (说教). He stated that
when we take our eyes off ourselves and realize God’s greatness, our
circumstances will be seen through a new perspective.
The second thing that reminded me to look at perspective was
reading a book. The Mitford Series is so good if you are looking for books to
read. So last night I was reading and one of the main characters (who is a
priest) is trying to figure out what to say at church. His sermon ended up
saying “In everything we give thanks.” It is easy to give thanks when we
feel successful in life. It is easy to give thanks when we receive a blessing.
But seriously, who in their right mind says thanks for the financial problems I
have?
4. Where does the author probably live now?
A.In the USA. B.In Britain. C.In China. D.In Korea.
5. How did she feel when the author received the email from UBC?
A.Surprised. B.Disappointed.
C.Excited. D.Pleased.
6.
In the first pastor’s view, when we face disappointment or despair, we sh
ould .
A.turn to God for help B.say thanks to it
C.see it in another way D.praise others for it
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The author can’t really free from the disappointment.
B.The author thinks the second sermon is wiser.
C.The author still wants to be a doctor.
D.The author thanks God for not being admitted by the university.
C
Situated in the southeast part of California, Death Valley covers an
area of more than 3.3 million acres, even larger than the famous
Yellowstone National Park.
Death Valley is a land of extremes. It is one of the hottest places on
the surface of the earth. The
highest ground temperature ever recorded was 93. 90℃ on July 15,
1972. It is the driest place in North America with an average rainfall of only
l.96 inches a year. Death Valley also boasts the lowest point in the western
hemisphere-Bad-water, at 85. 95 meters below sea level.
Death Valley got its name in 1849, when a group of emigrants were
looking for a shortcut to the gold field of California. They were given bad
advice and went into the valley. Some of them were killed by the bad
weather and harsh road. When the rest finally walked out, they gavethe
area its name by saying to it "Good-bye, Death Valley".
As the name might suggest, there is very little apparent vegetation
within Death Valley. First impressions, however, can be deceiving. Death
Valley includes more than 1000 species ofplants that have adapted to the
harsh conditions.
Death Valley is also a land of beauties. Sunrise and sunset are two of
the most spectacular attractions. Depending on different angles, they
show many of the area's different moods. For the best viewing, plan to be
there approximately one hour before sunset or before sunrise.
Death Valley National Park is open all year round. In spite of the
climate, hiking is one of the most popular activities in Death Valley. The
surrounding mountains produce spectacular wildflower displays along
with snow-covered peaks, breathtaking sand dunes, abandoned mines
and industrial structures.

xcept that .

New archaeological discoveries suggest that trade between Europe
and Asia along the Silk Road probably began in some form many
centuries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a widening
range of scientific and historical research could add a fascinating new
page to the epic (史诗) of the Silk Road.
The most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an
Egyptian mummy from about 1000 BC, long before regular traffic on the
Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously
thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity
along this route back even further, perhaps a million years to the migration
of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The official origin of East-West trade along the road is usually placed in
the late 2nd century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di
returned from a dangerous secret mission(使命)across the desert into
the remote high country of Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, travelled
as far as Afghanistan and brought back knowledge of even more distant
lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome.
Historians have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient
times. His journey opened the way for what have been thought to be the
first indirect contacts between the ancient world’s two superpowers,
China and Rome. Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war
horses and to the Parthian for acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soon finding
its way through a network of merchants to the luxury (奢侈品) markets in
Rome.
But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present
in the West long before the Han emperor started organized trade over the
Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of
world trade and provide insights into the mystery of just how and when
Europe and the Mediterranean lands first became aware of the glorious
culture at the other end of Eurasia.
12.
The word “coupled” in the first paragraph could best be replaced by
.
A.produced B.continued C.doubled
D.combined
13.
Historians have always considered Zhang Qian’s mission important beca
use they believe .
A.he brought back knowledge of Rome to the emperor
B.he discovered the Silk Road
C.he helped establish East-West trade
D.he travelled as far as Afghanistan
14. When did the official origin of East-
West commerce along the Silk Road get to Persia?
A.About 1000 BC. B.In the late 2nd century BC.
C.A million years ago. D.In the 2nd century.
15.
Until recently most historians believed that trade along the Silk Road
.
A.originated in the 2nd century BC
B.extended human migration into eastern Asia
C.began a million years ago
D.primarily benefited the Egyptians
