uagraduallybecamedominantinmoreandmoresocialdomainsduetoseveralfactors.Firstly,theShenzhengovernmentmadeadecisiontounifythelanguageofShenzhen.Secondly,\nschoolsandmediaalsotookanactiverole.Thirdly,andperhapsmoreimportantly,therewerepracticalneedsundertheimpactofmarketeconomy.Inaword,Putonghuaprovedtobeusefulwhenpeopleatgovernmentorbusinessmeetingswerefromdifferentdialectregions.Also,whendoingbusinesswithpeoplefromthenorth,theabilitytousePutonghuawaslinkedwithbusinessopportunities・AllthesefactorscontributedtothepromotionofPutonghuaandtheemergenceofabidialectalcommunity.Putonghuahasnowbecomethelanguageoftheworkplace,e.g.,governmentadministration,schooleducation,mediapublicity,andserviceencounters.Atthesametime,mother-tonguedialectsarestillusedformoreprivateoccasionswithinfamiliesandbetweenfriendsfromthesamedialectregions.Tobeconcluded,thegreatlanguagechangesthatShenzhenunderwentinthe1980shaveledtotheemergenceofbidialectalisminthecity.Scholarsgenerallywelcomethechange・TheydonotseeaconflictbetweenthepromotionofPutonghuaandthepreservationofmother-tonguedialects,buttheyrecognizethedistinctsocialfunctionsofthestandardandregionaldialects.SomescholarshaveaddressedthebalanceofradioandTVprogramsinPutonghuaandindifferentdialects.WhilePutonghuaprogramsshouldbeincreased,theysay,thosedialectsshouldnotbecompletelyeliminated.Whatweshouldnoticeisthatthereisageneralacceptanceofdialectprograms,butalsoarelativelyhigherstatusofCantoneseamongotherregionaldialectsspokeninthecity.
