concreteisinplace,andforsevendaysthereafter,thekerbs,base,andbackingshallbefullycuredandprotectedfromdryingoutandagainsttheharmfuleffectsofweather,includingrainandrapidtemperaturechanges.ThemethodofprotectionshallbesubjecttotheEngineer'sapproval.Theuseofcolouredcuringmembraneswillnotbepermitted.Concretenotproperlycuredandprotectedwillberejectedandshallberemovedfromthesite.vAtevery10mintervalmovementjoint20mmthickshallbeformedthroughtheconcretebedandbacking.Thejointfillershallbebitumenimpregnatedcorkboard.Thefillershallextendthroughthekerb,bed,backingandchannel,andshallbetrimmedtothefinishedshapeofthekerbandchannel.vAtaccesspoints,thekerbs,includingthebedbackingshallbedroppedtoshowafaceof25mmorasotherwisedesignated.vAttheterminationofanykerbrun,theendkerbsectionshallbeslopeddowntogroundlevel,ifapplicable,andangledawayfromtheroadat30degreesinaccordancewithBS7533.vAllkerbsshallbethoroughlycleanedofallextraneousmaterials.vKerbsshallbelaidwithinatoleranceof±3mm,ateachendofanelement,totheDesignatedlinesandgrades.3.2PRECASTCONCRETEPAVINGBLOCKSnvStandardrectangularprecastconcretepavingblocksshallhaveaworksizelengthof200mmandaworksizewidthof100mm.Pavingblocksofanyothershapemaybemadeprovidedtheyfitwithina295mmsquarecoordinatingspace.Thepreferredworksizethicknessesare60mm,80mmand100mmforalltypesofpavingblocks.vTheactualsizesofthepavingblocksasdeterminedinaccordancewithBSEN1338shallnotdeviatefromtheworksizedimensionsbymorethanthefollowingtolerances:Length±2mmWidth±2mmThickness±3mmvThebinderusedinmakingthepavingblocksshallbeOrdinaryPortlandCement,SulphateResistingPortlandCementorModerateSulphateResistingPortlandCementwhichcomplieswithBS4027orASTMC150;respectively.vTheaggregatesusedinmakingthepavingblocksshallbeGabbro,andtheyshallcomplywithsection5ofQCS2010.vThewaterusedinthemanufacturingoftheblocksshallbeofdrinkingqualityorshallbeinconformancewithsection5oftheQCS2010.vThepigments,whichareusedtogivecolourtothepavingblocks,shallcomplywithBSEN12878.vTheaveragecrushingstrengthof16pavingblocksshallnotbelessthan49N/mm2andthecrushingstrengthofanyindividualblockshallnotbelessthan40N/mm2.vTheaveragewaterabsorptionofthetestedsamplesshallnotexceed5%andnoindividualblockshallhaveawaterabsorptiongreaterthan6%.3.2.1LAYINGPRECASTCONCRETEPAVINGBLOCKSvThepavingblocksshallbelaidgenerallyinaccordancewithBS7533-3andtoapatternapprovedbytheEngineer.vAlayingcourseconsistingoffineaggregates(sand),whichcomplieswiththecorrespondinggradingrequirementgiveninTable8.2,shallbeconstructed.Thefineaggregatesshallbeplacedinamoistbutnotasaturatedconditionandshallbecompactedsothatalayingcoursethicknessof50mmapproximatelyisformed.Thissandlayershallbeplacedonacompactedaggregatesub-baseorbaseasindicatedintheprojectspecifications/drawings.nvThepavingblocksshallbelaidonthelayingcourseandcompactedusingaplatecompactorwithaplateareaofnotlessthan0.25m2,transmittinganeffectivepressureofnotlessthan75kN/m2ofplateatafrequencyofvibrationintherangeof75Hzto100Hz.vAmaximumdeviationfortheblockpavingfromdesignlevelsof±6mmshallbemaintained.vThejointsbetweenthepavingblocksshallbefilledwithdryjointingsandbyspreadingitoverthesurfaceandbrushingitintothejoints.ThedrysandshallbenaturalandshallcomplywiththecorrespondinggradingrequirementgiveninTable8.2.Theblockpavingshallbevibratedtoensurethatthejointshavebeencompletelyfilled.Table8.2Gradingforlayingcourse&jointingsandSieveSize%PassingLayingCourseSandJointingSand10mm1005mm90-1001002.36mm75-10095-1001.18mm55-9090-100600μm35-7055-100300μm8-3515-50150μm0-100-1575μm0-30-33.3PRECASTCONCRETEPAVINGSLABSvPrecastconcretepavingslabsshallbehydraulicallypressed,complyingwithBSEN1339.nvThedimensionsofprecastconcretepavingslabsshallbeasperTable3ofBSEN1339unlessshownotherwiseonthecontractdrawings.vWherepermittedbytheEngineerasanalternative,slabs450mmx450mmandsmallermaybebeddedonalayerofcleansharpsandcomplyingwithBSEN12620GradingCorM,25mm±10mmthick.vOncircularworkwheretheradiusis12morless,allslabsshallberadiallycutonbothedgestotherequiredline.vTransversestrengthandwaterabsorptionrequirementsshallbeassessedinaccordancewithBSEN1339-appendixBandappendixC;respectively.TheloadsatfailureshallnotbelessthantheappropriatevaluegiveninTable8.3andthewaterabsorptionshallnotexceedthelimitgivenintheaforementionedTable.Table8.3TransversestrengthandwaterabsorptionofflagsFlagtypeMinimumloadatfailureforthickness(kN)Maximumwaterabsorptionin%bymass50mm60mm63mm65mm70mmA8.3-12.7--4.0A,C,D11.1-16.9--E9.6---18.8F9.1--15.4-G9.613.8---vThemortarbedshallbespreadonlyafterthebasehasbeenapprovedbytheEngineer.Thesubbaseshallbetestedfordensityandtheminimumdensityshallbegreaterthan95%ofthemaximumdrydensity.vSlabsshallbelaidinaccordancewithBS7533tothedesignatedcross-sectionandwithjointsatrightanglestothekerb.vSlabsshallbebeddedonasand/cement(3:1)mortarbeddingnotlessthan10mmandnotmorethan40mmthick.vUnlessdesignatedelsewherepavingslabsshallbelaidwithclosejointsofbetween2to4mm.Afterlayingthejointsshallbefilledwithsandcomplyingwithclause8.3.3.vWheredesignatedpavingslabsshallbelaidwithopenjointsofbetween5to10mmlaidinaccordancewithBS7533.3.4CAST-IN-PLACECONCRETEPAVEDAREASnvCast-in-placeconcreteforfootwaysandpavedareasshallonlybepermittedforsmallareaswhereitisawkwardorimpracticaltouseoneofthealternativepavingmaterialsspecifiedinthispartofthespecification.vTheuseofsteelreinforcementbarsormeshincast-in-placeconcreteslabsisnotpermitted.vPavingshallbecastinsizestoavoidtheformationofshrinkagecracks.TheactualmaximumsizeofareatobecastatonetimewillbeadvisedbytheEngineerbasedonthemixdesignandlayerthicknessshownonthedrawings.TheContractormaybepermittedtocastlargerareasatonetimeifnon-metallicfibersareaddedtotheconcretemixtoeliminatecracking.InsuchcasesthemaximumpoursizeshallbeproposedbytheContractorandapprovedbytheEngineer.vCast-in-placeconcreteforfootwaysandpavedareasshallbemixed,laidandcuredasdescribedinSection5QCS2010.vThegradeofconcrete,layout,thickness,positionofjointsandsurfacefinishshallbeasdesignated.vCast-in-placeconcreteshallbelaidonadesignatedsub-baseinaccordancewithPart4QCS2010.3.5BITUMINOUSPAVEDAREASvFlexiblesurfacingforfootwaysandpavedareasshallbemadeandlaidincompliancewithPart5QCS2010.vThetypeofmixandthesurfacetreatment/finishtothepavingwillbeasdesignated.nvSurfacingshallbelaidtotruelevelsandcrossfallsandbeofthedesignatedthickness.vSurfacingshallbelaidonadesignatedsub-baseinaccordancewithPart4QCS2010.3.6TrafficControlManagement3.6.1ThetrafficmanagementmeasuresfortheWorkswillmaintainalevelofserviceandsafetysatisfactorytotheMinistryOfInteriorTrafficAuthority,duringworksimplementation,andsubjecttotheClient’sapproval.SafetymeasuresshallbeproposedbytheContractorforapprovalpriortothecommencementofconstructionandshallincludethefollowingminimumprovisions:vWidthoftraveledlanesmaybereducedto3.20mbetweenobstacles.vNocounterflowtrafficwithouttrafficcone,movablebarriersormarkerposts.vNoU-tumsontheexpressway.vSiteworksprotection.vMovablebarrierwhentraveledlaneislessthan4.0mfromworksarea.vtrafficconesormarkerpostsinothercasesvSufficientlightingprovisionduringnightworks.Asaminimumlightingshallbeprovidedatalllocationswherevehiclesmustchangedirectionandatworksitesatinterchanges.nvAdvancewaningandinformationsigns.vMedianCrossingsvTemporarycrossingsallowtheshiftingoftrafficfromonecarriagewaytotheotherduringconstruction.Temporarycrossingscannotbeusedaspermanentcrossings.3.6.2ProposedTrafficManagementCriteriaandMethodslndevelopingtheproposedmethodsoftrafficmanagement,ithasbeenassumedthatminimumrequirementsarelimitedtotheminimumnumberoflanesavailable.Theimpositionofusingcurrenttrafficflowswouldresultinaconsiderablereductioninworkingefficiency,increasedmanagementdifficultiesandcontinualdisruptiontothetrafficduetotheneedtofrequentlyalterthetrafficmanagementscheme.Thiswouldobviouslyhaveanadverseeffectonbothcostandprogrammed.Takingthisintoconsiderationandthepracticalandinherentphysicalconstraints,thefollowingminimumtrafficmanagementcriteriaareproposedforimplementation:vTheworkingareatobephysicallyseparatedfrom‘live'traffic(preferablybyimpactResistantbarriers)vMinimumlanewidth3.20mvAllcounterflowtraffictobephysicallyseparatedvNocontraflowonentry/exitrampsvConstructiontrafficmaycrossfromonecarriagewaytoanotherwithinconstructionareaswithimpactresistantfortrafficbarriersorotherdesignatedareas.vlnpotentialblackspotlightingunitstobedeployedatnight3.6.3IsolationofWorkingAreasInordertosafelyisolatetheworkingareaasimplemethodoftrafficmanagementforeachtypeofroadlayouthasbeendevelopedwhichshouldprovideanefficienttrafficflowmanagementscheme.TheRoadSectiontoprovideatrafficschemes3.6.4WorkingArea-EntryandExitnlnordertominimizethenumberofinterfacesbetweenconstructiontrafficandgeneraltrafficweproposetolimitaccesstoandexitfromtheworkingareastodedicatedareaswithpermanentflagmentoassistconstructionequipmententeringandexitingconstructionareas.ThededicatedentryandexitareaswillbespacedalongtheconstructionareaandatInterchanges.Suchentryandexitareaswillbekepttoaminimum.DuetothehightrafficdensityatSignalitmaybenecessarytolimittheentryandexitareastothestartandendoftheconstructionarea.Thiswillbereviewedastheworksprogressandmodifiedifnecessary.3.6.5MedianCrossoversMediancrossoverswillbeconstructedforthepurposeoftrafhcmanagement.Alltemporarycrossoverswillberemoved.3.6.6TrafficManagementInstallation,Operation,andRemovalofTrafficManagementDevicesInstallationConditionofDevicesTemporarysignsanddevicesshallbecheckedimmediatelybeforeinstallationtoensurethattheyareingoodconditionandwillsuittheintendedpurpose.Theywillbecheckedfor:vCleanliness-itemsshouldbefreefromaccumulatedroadgrime,dirtorotherContaminates.vMechanicalCondition-itemsthatarebent,brokenorhaveanyotherdamagewillnotbeused.vBatteryOperatedDevices—itemsshouldbecheckedforbulbandbatteryCondition.3.6.7PositioningofDevicesTemporarysignsanddevicesshallbepositionedinaccordancewiththetrafficmanagementplansothatthey:varewithinthedriverslineofsightvdonotbecomeapossiblehazardtoworkersorvehiclesnvdonotdeflecttrafficintoanundesirablepathvSignsanddeviceswillbeplacedgenerallyabout1mclearofthetraveledpath.
