A SPEECH ABOUT MY HOMETOWN
My lovely hometown is located on the south shore of an island. It' s a small town with onlyabout 9, 000 people and an area of about 3. 8 square miles.
First, I want to talk about the people in the neighborhood. Generally speaking, peopleare very nice here, especially in summer. I feel that in summer everyone is in a great mood, and very generous. For example, one summer afternoon, I was at the gas station filling up mycar and was short of money. Generously an old gentleman gave me the money to pay the gas attendant.
That' s the type of people you can expect from my hometown. The greatest part about the town, in my opinion, is the location. The Great Bay is fiveminutes away from my house and it' s fantastic. Another great thing is how close everybody livesto each other. With it being such a small town, all my friends live five minutes away, whichis a great advantage to me and everyone else. Lastly, the nightlife is great. On any Saturdaynight every bar is packed with people, so there' s always something going on.
So far I' ve explained the good side of my hometown, but there are also some boring thingsabout it. It is great in summer, but it is a different story in winter. When winter comes around, the town turns into a ghost town. This is because there is nowhere to go. The only thing wehave is a shopping center. It would be nice if we had a few more options to choose from.

WHY VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering is a great way to get work experience, and may be one of the most valuableexperiences of your life. You learn new skills by trying new jobs. Better yet, you can meetpeople who can give you guidance and possibly help you to find a paid job later on. Employerswill be impressed that you took the initiative to learn new things. You can learn how a charitableorganization works. Best of all, you will be taking action to promote what you think is importantand probably be helping someone else along the way.
of considering volunteering as something you do for people who are not as fortunate asyourself, begin to think of it as an exchange. Consider that most people find themselves inneed
at some point in their lives. You may be the person with the ability to help today, buttomorrow you may be someone who needs others' help. Even now you might be on both sides ofthe service cycle: maybe you are a tutor for someone who can' t read, while last month thevolunteer ambulance corps rushed you to the emergency room. Volunteering also includesself-help. So if you are active in your neighborhood crime watch, your home is protected whileyou protect your neighbors' homes, too. It' s a double win: your community or cause benefitsfrom your work and you benefit from your experiences. In a word, adding your effort to thework of others makes everyone' s lives better.

The first year of school in America, known as kindergarten, usually begins between theages of five and six. Among rich countries such a late start is very strange. President Obamabelieves it is an economic and social problem; his education secretary goes as far as to saythat it is morally wrong. This statement has some support, as it is clear from research intovocabulary that youngsters from poor families enter kindergarten well behind those from richfamilies—a disadvantage that usually lasts a lifetime. Children from households on welfareknew 525 words by the age of three, while the children of professionals had mastered 1, 116.Pre-school can help close this gap. So in a speech last month, Mr. Obama called for apartnership between the federal government and the states to expand it to every American child. It later became
known that every meant those who come from families with incomes of up to 200%above the poverty line—equal to an income of $47, 000 for a family of four.
Some critics say that sending children to school at the age of four does not work. Theevidence suggests otherwise. For example, on March 20thnew results were announced from a studyof 9 to 11 year olds in New Jersey. This report found that disadvantaged children who had attendedpre-school had better literacy (读写能力) , language, maths and science skills. And two yearsof pre-kindergarten were better than one.
Some studies also follow the effects of early learning over lifetimes, such as its effecton crime rates and other factors that may eventually burden society. Critics have singled outa government scheme called Head Start, created in 1965, which provides poor households witha range of services including school-based early education.

WHAT DO YOU SAY IN A COVER LETTER?
A cover letter is a letter of introduction sent along with a résumé or curriculum vitae(CV) . How do you write a successful cover letter? Bear these points in mind, and you'll alwaysmake a great impression.
Keep your cover letter brief and to the point. Writing more than one page is usuallyunnecessary. If it is sent in an email, writing three short paragraphs is quite sufficient.
Explain why you are sending a résumé. Don' t make the reader guess what you are asking for.Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization – a flyer postedin your department, a web site, a family friend who works at the organization, etc.
Convince the reader to look at your résumé. The cover letter will be seen first. Therefore,it must be very well written and targeted to that employer.
Call attention to your background – education, leadership, experience – that is relevantto the position you are seeking.

It can be really frustrating (使人沮丧的) for an overweight person to go to a gym and workout with a positive attitude. All one has to do is walk by almost any nice gym and notice allthe healthy, sweating, skinny members. Sometimes they stare at those of us who are, well, zaftig.
It is easy to see the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that? Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining workoutclasses of while exercising, especially if they are larger than most of the others in the group.
Now the fitness industry is finally paying attention. Popular gyms are catering (迎合) tooverweight and weight conscious customers by dedicating areas where the skinny people are notallowed.
There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds overweight toparticipate.
Trainers recommend functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-pack abs(六块腹肌) . (79) They often use text messages to stay in touch with customers.Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or working ontheir own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety caused by poor body image. The equipment has been designed for use by larger people.
