二、阅读理解:正误判断(每题 10 分)
1、Most couples who get married or decide to live together
generally plan to havechildren. Several years ago, people
thought that having big families was common andthis was seen
as an advantage. That was mainly because children began working
at anearly age to help provide for the family. But with the
changing times and with the costof living getting higher every
single year, having a big family is no longer consideredto be
a practical option. In fact, more couples consider that they
have only one childand some do not have any desire to become
parents at all.
According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies,
by 1986, women aged 40 to44 years, were considerably more likely
to have given birth to two children than threechildren (36% vs.
27%) or four or more children (19%). However, taken
together, women were still more likely to have had three or more
children than to have had twochildren (46% vs. 36%).
In recent years, women were more likely to have had two
children than three or morechildren – a trend that was most
marked in the most recent period (38% vs. 25% in1996; 38% vs.
22% in 2006). These days, most families in Australia have
twochildren. But the number of women who had given birth to a
single child increasedprogressively from only 8% in 1981 to 13%
in 2006.
The U.S. Census Bureau states that there are approximately
14 million only childrenin America today. This comprises 20%
of the children's population compared to only10% around fifty
years ago.

families was( C )

2、Stopping Yelling At Your Kids
Parenting is hard. If you're a parent, I'm sure that I don't
need to tell you that our job isa tough one. When you're managing
children, it can be difficult to remember that theyare still
learning. If you find you are yelling at your kids more often
than you want to,here are some ways that can help you reduce
the yelling. I've been working on this forthe past few months
and I have to say, it's been amazing for both the kids and me.If
you are having an argument with your child, you need to make
sure you both takethe time to really listen. It gives both of
you time to think and really listen to eachother, which is
important. Kids are more likely to listen to you if you listen
to them! One of your biggest struggles is to remind yourself of
appropriate expectations. Youcan't expect that your youngest
acts as responsibly as your oldest. You should lowerwhat you
expect – taking into consideration things like their age –
it can make a bigdifference.
You should do your best to take a moment before yelling and
take in a deep breath. Itmakes a world of difference for you.
Instead of yelling, you'd better whisper. It canalso help
diffuse any situation by making things quieter, not louder.
Besides, the moretime you spend with your kids, the better
you'll get at communicating with them. You're both more likely
to understand each other.
If your children aren't listening or it seems they only
don't listen to you, you don't takeit personally. You should
remind yourself that your kids are still learning and
they'renot going to be perfect.

2、Among the more colorful characters of Leadville's golden
age were H.A.W. Taborand his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt,
better known as ―Baby Doe‖. Their historyis fast becoming one
of the legends of the Old West. Horace Austin Warner Tabor wasa
school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two children
he left Vermont bycovered wagon in 1855 to homestead in Kansas.
Perhaps he did not find farming tohis liking, or perhaps he was
lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Coloradomines. At any
rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado
miningcamp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed
Leadville when he becameits leading citizen. ―Great deposits
of lead are sure to be found here.‖ he said.
As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make
Leadville's fortune andwealth. Tabor knew little about mining
himself, so he opened a general store, whichsold everything
from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco. 『It was his custom
to ―grubstake‖prospective miners, in other words, to supply
them with food and supplies, or ―grub‖,while they looked for
ore, in return for which he would get a share in the mine if
onewas discovered. He did this for a number of years, but no
one that he aided ever foundanything of value.
Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two
miners came in andasked for ―grub‖. Tabor had decided to quit
supplying it because he had lost too muchmoney that way. These
were persistent, however, and Tabor was too busy to arguewith
them. ―Oh help yourself. One more time won't make any
difference,‖ He saidand went on selling shoes and hats to other
customers. The two miners took $17 worthof supplies, in return
for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their
findings.
They picked a barren place on the mountain side and began
to dig. After nine daysthey struck a rich vein of silver. Tabor
bought the shares of the other two men, and sothe mine belonged
to him alone. This mine, known as the ―Pittsburgh Mine,‖ made
1300 000 for Tabor in return for his $17 investment.
Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine on another barren
hillside just outsidethe town for $117 000. This turned out to
be even more fabulous than the Pittsburgh, yielding $35 000
worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor
became itsfirst mayor, and later became lieutenant governor of
the state.

Lifelong Learning & Distance Education
The term ―lifelong learning‖ is very popular nowadays.
It describes the need forpeople to continue their education and
training throughout their lives. Lifelonglearning is more and
more important for everyone because people are now
facingdifferent career choices in changing economies. It is
believed lifelong learning is acrucial response to the
challenges of the global knowledge economy.
Currently, most universities have reacted to the era of
lifelong learning by adding newprograms and services for adults
who seek to combine employment with part-timestudy. Special
arrangements have been developed for these students but the
coreactivity of the university, providing teaching to
full-time young undergraduates, oftengoes on much as before.
Lifelong learning is both formal and non-formal; and the
boundaries betweenface-to-face teaching and distance
education are increasingly blurred.By making learning possible
anytime and anywhere, distance education is a powerfultool for
supporting lifelong learning. Technology-based teaching is
creating neweducational systems that anyone from anywhere can
access. The key challenge foruniversities istoevolve from a
teacher-centered model of education to
student-centered model. The challenge for governments is
that they have to developnew funding approaches and new quality
assessment procedures.
