Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words It was New Year’s night. An old man was standing by a window. He raised his sad eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the 1 were bright like white flowers in a lake. Then he looked at the earth, where few more hopeless people now moved towards their tombs(坟墓). He had already passed sixty years, and he had 2 from his journey nothing but mistakes and sadness. Now his health was poor and his mind was not strong any more. ‎ ‎ The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him. And he remembered the 3 moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads—one led to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers and sweet songs; the other led to a deep, dark cave, which was endless and full of devils(恶魔)and terrible snakes.‎ ‎ He looked towards the sky and cried. “O youth, return! O my father, place me 4 at the entrance to life, and I’ll choose the better way!” But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.‎ ‎ He saw the lights getting away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life. He saw a star fall from the sky and 5 , and this was just like his life. His regret(懊悔), which was like a sharp knife, cut deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood. They had done their best for 6 and were now happy on this New Year’s night.‎ He remembered his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him. But he chose the wrong way. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and he cried out. “Come back, my early days! Come back!” ‎ His youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year’s night. He was still young though his faults (缺点) were 7 ; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which led to the peaceful and sunny land. ‎ ‎1. Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage. (2011 嘉定)‎ I didn't think I had a passion(强烈的情感). I would sit in front of the TV all day, thinking about n 1 but the next show. ‎ It was not long ago that I first learned how important having a passion is to life.‎ That day I went with my mum to drop my sister off at the gym. I was bored. Then, as my mum s 2 at a red light, someone on the side of the road caught my eye. It was a man dressed in rags (破旧衣服). He was homeless. That didn't interest me, for I had seen many like him before.‎ But in some way he was d 3 . This man was not sitting down with a sad expression. He had a ‎ radio in his hand and was dancing happily to the music. The radio seemed to be the most precious thing he had.‎ ‎"Mum, why does that man have a radio even t 4 he's homeless?" I asked.‎ ‎"He bought it," she replied. I was still puzzled. ‎ ‎"But if he's homeless, why doesn't he use the money to buy food or c 5 ? He wasted it on something he doesn't need."‎ ‎"Well, Sarah, sometimes food and clothes aren't the most important things. We need happiness, too."‎ That man must care enough about music to buy a radio instead of food or clothes. I soon realized that happiness is the k 6 to life. Without it, there's nothing to look forward to. A passion gives a person the happiness they need to keep going.‎ Since then I've never gone a day without thinking of what's t 7 important. A home, a meal, clothes — these things are only part of the picture. What's often forgotten is that we all need a joy, a light in a dark day. We all need a passion.‎ Keys: nothing stopped different though clothes truly ‎ C. Answer the questions. ‎ Everyone has good days and bad days.‎ Sometimes, you may feel that you're on top of the world and all the questions on your maths test might seem easy. But sometimes you feel frightened or you lose things, and you cannot focus on your school work.‎ For more than 20 years, scientists have suggested that high self-esteem (自我尊重) is the key to success. They said that kids who feel good about themselves do better in school and have fewer emotional (情感的) problems than kids who have a low opinion of themselves.‎ Now, new research shows that focusing just on building self-esteem may not be helpful. In some cases, having high self-esteem can bring bad results if it makes you less likeable or more upset when you fail at something.‎ ‎"Forget about self-esteem," says Jennifer Crocker, a psychologist (心理学家) at the university of Michigan, US. "It’s not the important thing" Crocker's advice may sounds bit strange because it is good to feel good about Oneself Studied show that people with high self-esteem are less likely to be sad, anxious, shy, or lonely than those with low self-esteem.‎ But, after reviewing about 18,000 studies on self-esteem, Roy Baumeister, a psychologist at Florida State University, has found that building up your self-esteem will not necessary make you a better person; People with high self-esteem tend to think more of themselves while people with low self-esteem are more likely-to rely on their friends when they need help.‎ Researchers say it is best to listen to and support other people. Set out to create or build something. If you fail at something, try to learn from the experience. "The best therapy (药方) is to know your own weak points" Vohs says, "It's OK to say, 'I'm not so good at that,' and then move on."‎ ‎1. We can hardly focus on our school work when we lose things, can we?‎ ‎2. According to scientists, what is the key to success?‎ ‎3.
