短文内容回答问题
On June 26th, 2000, two scientists, called Francis Collins and Craig Venter, told the world that they could now
read the whole “map” of the human body: DNA. DNA is something that all humans have, and it tells the body what
to do. DNA is the reason that we look like our mother and father, because we get some of their DNA to make our
own. Now we can read some of this “map”, and so we can find out more about how our bodies work.
People have been trying to understand the human body for a long time. In 1860, Gregory Mendel discovered
that there is a special reason why we look the same as other people in our family. It is because of small things called
“genes” that we have in our body. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick made another discovery and found out
that those small parts are really messages written in the DNA with a special language.
In 1961, Marshall Nirenberg and Johann Matthaei found the first “word” that they could understand in that
language, showing how DNA tells the cell to build its parts. This meant that one day we would be able to read all
the messages that a human body gets from its parents’ bodies. Scientists have now found all the words in DNA map,
but we still do not understand what they all do. By understanding what just one “word” means, we can help save
people from several diseases. So the more we understand, the more doctors will be able to do.
Most people hope that this will help to make better medicine and help people who are very ill. Other people
worry about that when we learn more words and find out lots of other information, we still use it in the wrong way,
just to make people more attractive, or stop sick people getting jobs.
1. Could Francis and Craig read the “map” of DNA in 2000?

Where can you get beauty, knowledge and insight(深刻的见解) all in one? The answer is probably a museum.
There is a long list of benefits someone can get from going to a museum. However, the best part of museum is
they encourage people to become lifelong learners.
Socrates once said, “Wisdom begins in wonder.” Each time you visit a museum, it could spark(激起) an
interest in a field you might never have heard before. Every time we go through museum exhibits, we see
something we didn’t know anything about. It encourages us to go home and look up more information.
To help students better understand what they have learned in schools, many schools use museums as a tool to
add to their curriculum(课程). For example, you may have learned about static(静电) in physics classes. But in a
science museum, you can have a more hands-on experience of how amazing static can be. When you touch a big
ball full of static electricity, all your hair stands up straight like an angry lion!
In the US, there is the New York Museum Education Act. It says that New York’s museums and schools should
become partners to help students prepare for the 21st century. In China, the government asks more schools to
organise more museum trips. Earlier this year, the popular travel website Trip Adviser asked its users to rank(评
级)theirs favourite museums. They picked the top 25 museums in the world. The first three are: The Metropolitan
Museum of Art,New York, US. Musee d’Orsay, Paris, France and the Art Institute of Chicago, US. The Museum of

What can we do to help protect the environment? It seems useless to just pick up a piece of trash (垃圾), but
what will happen if you keep doing it every day? Tommy Kleyn, an ordinary man from the Netherlands, may give
you the answer.
Tommy Kleyn walked past a polluted river on his way to work every day. It used to be a beautiful view, but
the trash on the bank made it dirty and smelly. So Tommy decided to pick up the trash along the river a little bit at a
time after work. “It took me about 30 minutes to fill one garbage(垃圾) bag with trash, but one garbage bag didn't
seem helpful in a place as polluted as this. I decided to fill one bag of trash each day as I passed by," Tommy said.

more people knew about Tommy's story. Other people in the community began following in his footsteps and
cleaning up trash on their way home, too.

really makes a difference and you will be amazed at how good you feel afterwards," he said.

Body language is one of the most powerful means of communication, often even more powerful than spoken
language. People around the world show all kinds of feelings, wishes and attitudes that they might never speak
aloud. It is possible to ―read‖ others around us, even if they do not want us to catch their unspoken communication.
Of course, body language can be misread, but many gestures and actions are common.
The most common facial expression is, of course, the smile – its function is to show happiness and put
people at ease. It does not always mean that we are truly happy, however. Smiles around the world can be false,
hiding other feelings like anger, fear or worry. There are unhappy smiles, such as when someone ―loses face‖ and
smiles to hide it. However, the general purpose of smiling is to show good feelings.
From the time we are babies, we show unhappiness or anger by frowning (皱眉头). In most places around
the world, frowning and turning one’s back to someone shows anger. Making a fist (拳头) and shaking it almost
always means that someone is angry.
How about showing that I am bored? Looking away from people or yawning will, in most cases, make me
appear to be uninterested. However, if I turn toward and look at someone or something, people from almost every
culture will think that I am interested.
Being respectful to people is subjective, based on each culture, but in general it is probably not a good idea to
give a hug to boss or teacher. In almost every culture, it is not usually good to stand too close to someone of a
higher rank (等级). Standing at a little distance with open hands will show that I am willing to listen.
With so many cultural differences between people, it is great to have some similarities in body language. We
can often be wrong about each other, so it is an amazing thing that we understand each other as well as we do!
1. What is even more powerful than spoken language according to the passage?
2. What is the most common facial expression?
3. How do babies normally show their anger?
4. What is not good to do when you stay with someone of a higher rank?

positive activity for world peace and is to build up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship through laughter.
The first “World Laughter Day” gathering(集会)took place in Mumbai, India, on 11th January 1998. 12, 000
members from India and international Laughter Clubs attended it. Now there are about 5, 000 Laughter Clubs

My friend Brett had just got a bike. A lot of kids in my neighborhood knew how to ride. I also wanted to ride,
but all the boys told me I couldn’t do it because I was a girl. I decided to prove them wrong, so Brett let me try his
bike. I wasn’t on for one minute before I fell off. He came over to see if I was OK, but then started laughing.

You might hear about all the different clubs at your school and wonder – where did they all come from? How
do you start a school club? This simple step-by-step guide will show you how to start a club right from the
beginning to the end.
Work out the plan.Choose a time and a place for your club. Decide on a room tohold the club in with your
friend, and speak with the person in charge of the room. Agree with them on a time, but make it during school
hours, and not during lessons or work time. Plan out how the club will run. At many schools, students start

Find responsible people. You can’t start a club with only one member. Every club needs some people who are
responsible, intelligent and hardworking. A club including people like this will certainly succeed. Also starting to
talk with the responsible friends will help in the planning of the club so that you will not have to do it by yourself.
Talk to the teachers. Speak to the teachers of both your classes and your members’ classes. If all of them
agree on your plan, you may speak to the headmaster. If the headmaster agrees, move on to the next step.
Persuade(说服)others to join. The first thing is to create a poster. On the poster, you can introduce your club
with some pictures to attract others. Prepare a speech. Make people understand the motive of your club and
different needs of the club. This will provide a clear view to get people to join.
Stay organized. Now that a club has started, it is not over yet. All of the hard parts may have passed, but there

As life-saver Christopher Walsh rescued(营救) his brother and then his sister from the water of a canal(运河),
his mother shouted to him:” I’m proud of you.”
His mother Bery1 sat proudly and watched last night as Christopher was given the “Child of Courage‟ award by
his favourite TV star.
Christopher was in the car with his mother, father, sister Rosie, 10, and brother Mac, 7, when his father drove
into a metal barrier.
The family’s car fell down a hill into the canal, and landed with its wheels up.
Christopher, then 12, swam through a broken window and got out into the fresh air. Then he saw the rest of his
family were still in the car-in the water. He took a big breath and swam back to save first Mac, and then Rosie.
Christopher, from England, said:“ I didn’t think about it and only knew I had to get them out. I was frightened, but
it was all happening so fast, and I didn’t really think about the danger.”
Christopher freed Mac and then swam back to get non-swimmer Rosie, who was under the cold, cloudy water,
in the car.
Christopher had to feel for her seatbelt(安全带) because he could not see anything. He took the seatbelt off her,
then went up for air. Finally he went back to pull her out of the car.
Bery1 I said:“ When I got to the side and looked back, I thought Christopher and Rosie had gone. I thought
they were dead. Then I saw him come up out of the water like a dolphin, and I could see he had Rosie. I shouted
