Many People ask me, “Paul, do you have a car in Xiamen?” I always replay, “no way. Even if I had the money to buy a car, I wouldn’t buy one.” Why? Well I think the buses are great. I used to ride my bike everywhere, but now I only ride 2 times a week. It can be dangerous riding a bike with the traffic situation getting busier and busier.
Now I take the bus. If I compare Xiamen’s bus service to what we have at home, it’s a million times better. Firstly, the bus service in my home town is expensive, unreliable(不可靠的) and inconvenient. Most people in England don’t trust public transport so they just buy a car to get from A to B. I find that here, there’s no need to have a car. I have bought a traffic card, which gets me wherever I want to go within Xiamen island for 9 mao. And I never really wait that long for a bus either.
13
Some people do say, “oh, but the buses are so crowded.” That can’t be helped either. There are a lot of people here. This is China. There are some things that we just have to stand. The bottom line is …if I travel to work by taxi, it will cost about 505 RMB a month. If I go by bus it costs 39 RMB. You do the math!
Talking about taxis, I was told that all the old taxis would be gone by now. Sometimes I still get into an old noisy smelly taxi which feels like it’s going to break down at any time. And I still pay the same price as taking a newer taxi. And why are most of the taxi drivers so easy to get angry? And why do they all change shift(换班) at the same time in the evening when it’s busy? Am I the only one that thinks that the system(系统) needs improving?
47. Paul is from .
A. Italy B. Sweden C. The United Kingdom
48. Paul doesn’t ride the bike to go everywhere now because he thinks .
A. it’s not safe B. it wastes time C. it’s tiring
49. Paul didn’t buy a car because .
A. he hasn’t got enough money
B. Xiamen’s bus service is cheap and convenient
C. the traffic situation is getting busier and busier.
50. The word “stand” here means .
A. 站着 B. 维持现状 C. 忍耐、忍受
51. Which is TRUE about the taxis in Xiamen according to Paul?
A. The price of taxi is too expensive. B. Some of the taxis are too old.
C. Most of the taxi driver are friendly.

When you cut your skin, you bleed(流血). If a person loses a lot of blood, he will become ill and may die. Blood is very important. People have always known that. At one time, some people even drank blood to make them strong!
When doctors understand how blood goes around inside the body, they try ways of giving blood to people who need it. They take blood from the healthy people and give it to people who need it. This is called " blood transfusion". The blood goes from the arm of the healthy person into the arm of the sick person.
But there are two problems. First, it does not always work. Sometimes people die when they have blood transfusion. Later, doctors find that we do not all have the same kind of blood. There are four groups—O, A, B and AB. We all have blood of one of these groups. They also find that they can give any kind of blood to people of group AB. But they find that they must give A-group blood to A-group people and B-group blood to B-group people. I have O-group blood and the doctor told me that I could give blood to anyone else safely.
There is another problem. To give blood of the right kind, doctors have to find a person of the right blood group. Often they can not find a person in time. If they have a way to keep the blood until someone needs it, they can always have the right kind of blood. At first they find they can keep it in bottles for fifteen to twenty days. They do this by making it very cold. Then they find how to keep it longer. In the end they find a way of keeping blood for a very long time.
We call a place where we keep money a "bank". We call a place where we keep blood a "blood bank". One day, when you grow up, you may decide to give blood to a "blood bank". In this way you may stop someone from dying. Or perhaps one day you may become ill. You may need blood. The "blood bank" will give it to you.

bark
You are going to read something about tree rings .There may be some new words, but you can guess their meaning according to the picture.
layer
As a tree grows, it produces new layers of wood around the trunk (树干) , just under the bark. If a tree is cut down, the layers are visible in a cross section. The layers are called tree rings.
We can learn many things from the tree rings. Most trees grow one new ring each year. Because of this we can know the age of a tree. But the tree does not grow at same speed all year. It grows very quickly in spring and summer, slowly in autumn and winter. The light ring is larger because it is the spring and autumn growth, the dark ring is the slow autumn and winter growth. So when you look at the rings, one year is a light and dark ring together. To find the age of the tree when it is cut down just count the dark rings. The oldest ring is the small one in the middle and the youngest is the last ring just below the bark.
The size of tree rings are different each year, that depends upon the environmental conditions(条件) that the tree experiences. For most area tree rings will be wider(更宽的) during years of plenty of rain and narrower(更窄的) during
13
times of little rain. Sometimes the rings are closer together on one side of a tree and wider apart on the other. That’s because one side of the tree has grown faster than the other. Trees like all plants need light and space to grow, maybe this kind of trees have been on the edge(边缘) of the forest and received more light.
62. Look at the picture below, it’s part of the tree ring, we can know the age of the tree is
A. 14 B. 28 C. 29
63. The ring just below the bark is the ring of a tree.
A. earliest B. widest C. latest
64. Which tree may live at the edge of the forest?
A. B. C.
65. If the ring of 1998 is wider than that of 2000, that means .
A. there is less rain in 2000 than in 1998
B. the winter is colder in 1998 than in 2000
C. there is one more day in 2000 than in 1998
66. According to the passage, which statement is NOT TRUE?
A. A tree grows at the same speed each year.
B. If you want to know the age of a tree, you can count the layers.
C. We can get some information about the climate in the pass from the tree rings.
