5 Mrs. Jones came up to the judge, he looked at her seriously and said that she was 6 old to drive a car, and that the reason why she had not stopped at the red 7 was most probably that her eyes had become 8 with old age, so that she had simply not seen it.

Passage 1
There's a common problem that exists in almost every family—how to monitor people living at home who are weak or elderly? It has been a great big trouble for decades. Until now, Johann Siau, a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Engineering and Technology, has been working on the university's InterHome project in order to create a home that could solve that hard problem.
The university's wider InterHome project is a development of a smart house, and the assisted living project is a part of it. In this part, the house is set to keep some useful patterns for its master and gradually adapt to one's style so that it can save energy as much as possible. Johann reported, “We've developed a wrist-band type of device(装置) which allows us to monitor the condition of an elderly person, or whoever is wearing the same device. It allows us to collect data of a person to see if the person has fallen or is away from where he is supposed to be. It connects an elderly person with the assisted living type of device with the InterHome.”
The InterHome carries a series of latest technologies, such as the broadband, the mobile data and communication, but the most important task is that the researchers must make sure all the technology works together. Since it is not just a prototype(样品) or a vehicle for research. It's a study tool to help students from different scientific backgrounds learn about and develop technology. It requires lots of skills from students—electronic engineers, computer students, design students etc. “The present plan we are working on is a smart home project in Watford with some commercial companies. We are looking at how a smarter home can provide extra value services,” said Johann.

D.To introduce a new kind of technology to help people to enjoy a better life.
Passage 2
Pollution has become one of the most serious problems in recent years. Pollution inside homes and other buildings kills more than 4 million people each year. Many people die as a result of breathing smoke or from cooking over wood-powered or coal-powered stoves.
One way to reduce the number of deaths is through cooking equipment powered by the sun. Crosby Menzies, a solar power expert in a South African company, described his latest solar cooker called the “Sol-4”. “It is four square meters of mirrors, six to eight meters in length. It is quite a large cooker.”
The “Sol-4” works by reflecting(反射) light from the sun off large mirrors. The mirrors direct(把……对准) the light at a cooking pan. Then the light heats the pan with solar energy. Within two minutes, the pan is hot enough to cook sausages and onions. In just four minutes, water can be boiled. That is as fast as cooking with natural gas or electricity.
The cooker is also much “friendlier” than other models because people do not have to stand in the sun to use it. And people can prepare meals without having to collect firewood or spend money on coal. Such individuals would be less likely to have breathing illness from harmful smoke.
At present, the cooker only works when the sun is shining. But engineers are working on a way to make it work without sunlight.
Each cooker costs about $2,000, which is a large amount of money for most Africans. To solve that problem, Crosby Menzies has created a non-governmental organization called Solar Cookers for Africa. It plans to raise money through donations to provide poor people with solar cooking equipment.
1.The passage is mainly about . ( )

4.A 5.A
too…to… 故选C。
7.D
故选A。
11.B
从后文“The judge took the 13 and tried to thread it.” 故选A。
根据第一段前两句“There's a common problem that exists in almost every family—how to monitor people living at home who are weak or elderly? It has been a great big trouble for decades.” 故选A。
