asequallystronginalldirections,regardlessofthepositionoftheSunortheMilkyWayrelativetotheobserveronEarth.Latermeasurementsshowedthattheradiationwasextremelyuniform--theydetectedvariationsoflessthanonepartin10,000.Clearlythisradiationwascomingfromthedistantpartsoftheuniverse.ThiscosmicbackgroundradiationwasrightinlinewithBigBangtheory.ImmediatelyfollowingtheBigBang,theuniversewastremendouslyhot.Whenmatterandphotonspartedcompany300,000yearsaftertheBigBang,theradiationwasfreetotravelthroughspace.BigBangtheoristsknewthatiftheirscenariowascorrect,thisradiationmuststillbeintheuniverse--afterall,wherecoulditgo?Theyalsoknewthat,becauseoftheDopplerShiftassociatedwiththeexpansionoftheuniverse,thesephotonsmusthavebeen"stretched"intoradiowavesofmuchlongerwavelength--inthemicrowaveregionoftheelectromagneticspectrum.Moreover,measurementstakeninyearstocomewouldshowthatthecosmic\nbackgroundradiationisconsistentwiththatemittedbyablackbody.Ablackbodyisahypotheticalobjectthatabsorbsallradiationfallingonit.Whenheated,itwouldemitradiationatcharacteristicenergiesorwavelengthsthatcorrespondtoitstemperaturealone.Inpractice,suchabodywouldhavetobetotallyisolated.Theseconditionsdescribethehot,dense,nearlyperfectlyopaqueuniverseinitsfirst300,000years.TheSteadyStatetheory,whichhadnowayofaccountingforthecosmicbackgroundradiationwhosecharacteristicssomuchresembledablackbody's,wasputtorest.
