gaisalsoahugenthusiast,tellingherfansthat“Iwillalways,always,trymyverybesttowrapmyarmsaroundyouwhenImeetyou.”Butnotallaregratefultobeembraced,evenbythemostinfluentialandfamous.Tothem,anyhugisoffensiveifit’snotsincere.AmandaHess,writingforUSmagazineSlate,sayspublicfiguresshouldstopimposinghugsoneveryonetheymeet.Forthem,ahugisrarelyagestureofsincerefellowship,compassionoraffection.It’sallpartofashow.Hugsarefalselyintimatepowerplaysusedbypublicfigurestoestablishtheirsocialdominanceoverthoseintheirgrasp.CeciliaWalden,aBritishjournalistwritingforTheTelegraphwholivesinNewYork,holdsthesameopinion.“Power-hugging”,asshecallsit,is“anassaultdressedupaskindness”.IthasbecomeafadintheUSwhere“bossesarealreadycuddlingtheirstaff(eithershortlybeforeorafterfiringthem),[and]menandwomentheirfrenemies,inathousandfraudulentdisplaysofsolidarity”.
