I also have been wondering about the future of English as the world's Lingua Franca(通用语).I was thinking that maybe Chinese would overpower English as the dominant world business language. But it appears that the Chinese government is actively promoting English to their public school students. So maybe, if China becomes the next world power, English will remain the current Lingua Franca under Chinese influence.

Esperanto is the only language of which there are no ethnic(种族的)ties, and it's a million times easier to learn than English. The idea of making everyone learn “your language” is socially dominating and can only result in dysfunctional(紊乱的)international

Perhaps the evolution English will face is to become more common, not more diverse. I say this because of broadcast media. For example, in Arabic countries, the dialects have been so distinct that people from various countries can not understand each other. However, with the increasing role of Broadcast Arabic, the language is becoming more unified(统一的). The continued expansion of English as an international business language will probably strengthen its commonality and weakening various dialects. An example is the word for “get in line”. Many of us enjoy the companionship of pets. In fact, according to a 2002 survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, 62 percent of American households include pets. Sitting in the front row in her college classes carefully taking notes, Nola Ochs is just as likely to answer questions as to ask them. That’s not the only thing marking her off from her classmates at Fort Hays State University. She’s 95, and when she graduates on May 12th, it's believed she'll become the world's oldest person to be awarded a college degree.
She didn't plan it that way. She just loved to learn as a teenager on a
Hodgeman County farm, then as a teacher at a one-room school after graduating from high school and later as a farm wife and mother.
“Even as I grew older, that enthusiasm for study was still there. I came here with no thought of it being an unusual thing at all,” she said.
She's getting offers for television appearances, and reporters show up wanting to interview her. She says she enjoys it. “It brings attention to this college and this part of the state.”

Studying in the US: A Free, Year at a Community College
Two-year colleges in the United States are also known as community colleges. Students earn an associate degree (肄业学位).Or they can train for a job for a year or two and get a certificate(证书).
Community colleges are less costly than other schools. Some international students can even get a year of education for free. The United States government and the colleges pay the costs in a program called the Community College Initiative.
Six countries took part during the first two years: Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa and Turkey. Now those countries are joined by Cuba, Ghana and most of Central America. Local Fulbright committees generally nominate (提名) the students.
The program provides job training for people who otherwise could not attend college. They learn skills their countries need, like agriculture and health care. Vocational school teachers and administrators from Egypt can also receive professional development through the program.
The program began two years ago with eighty-four students and six colleges. State Department officials say more than five hundred students will attend thirty-seven community colleges this fall.
Where students are placed depends on what they want to study. The program is also a chance to learn about America and its people. And it gives colleges a way to expand their diversity. The students live in dormitories or apartments or with local families.
Carol Stax-Brown is an administrator of the program for a group called Community Colleges for International Development. She says they look for people who have had some work experience, speak some English and want to experience another culture. My father made a deal with me that he would match whatever I could come up with to buy my first car. From the time I was a saver. My allowance(零花钱), back in those days, was twenty five cents a week.
