It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer. Now, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by. Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.” Liz, “I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.” 4.The passage tells us that _________ . A.people seldom work long hours to make money B.people hardly buy more things than necessary C.people are sure everything they own is in the right place D.people realize there is more to life than just making money 5.Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm ___________. A.was easy to organize B.has improved family life C.was extremely expensive D.has been a total success 6.What does the author mean by saying “the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives” in the second paragraph ? A.People work long hours to earn their living. B.To make more money through hard work is the aim of people’s life. C.Long hours of hard work occupy too much of people’s life. D.People spent too much time and money eating meals. 7.The underlined word “downshifting” in the second paragraph refers to _____. A.repairing your car by yourself B.spending money carefully C.moving out to the countryside to live a simpler and better life D.living in a big house in the suburbs and dining out once a week C As a good mother to three children, I have tried never to let my passion stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows (誓言)mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today. So here's what I want to tell you today: Get a life. A real life, not a desire of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure; it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that you have no business taking it for granted. It's so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours and our minutes. It's so easy to exist instead of to live. I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my choice, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all. I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and totally. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned. By telling them this: Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learn to be happy. If you do, you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived. 8.It can be inferred from the passage that_____________. A.the author didn't try her best to work well B.the author spent all her time caring for her children C.the author likes traveling very much D.the author is a success in personal life 9.How did the author form her view of life? A.Through social experience. B.Through an unfortunate experience. C.From her children and husband. D.By learning from her friends. 10.By the underlined sentence “It's so easy to exist instead of to live”in the fifth paragraph, the author really means that people tend to____________. A.work rather than enjoy life B.waste a lot in life C.make a living rather than live a real life D.forget the most important lessons in life 11.What's the author's attitude toward work? A.Do it well to serve others. B.Earn enough money to make life better. C.Don't let it affect your real life. D.Try your best to get a higher position and a pay raise. D Until late in the 20th century, most Americans spent time with people of generations. Now mid-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves. That’s because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care center, our 13- year-olds in school and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior- citizen homes. Why? We live away from the old for many reasons: young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears for aging and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it’s so hard that we stay away from the people who need us most. Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young. A reporter moved her family onto a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbours and had her children deliver it and visit. Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects. “My children have never been less lonely,” the reporter said. The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home when a visitor showed up with a baby. She was immediately surrounded. People who hadn’t gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep wake up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure. Grandparents are a special case. They give grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it, “my grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end.” Grandchildren speak of attention they don’t get from worried parents. “My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down,” one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer, more trusting. 12.Now in an American family, people can find that ________ A.children never live with their parents. B.aged people are supported by their grandchildren. C.not all working people live with their parents. D.grandchildren are supported by their grandparents. 13.The reason why old people are left alone may be that ________ A.the old don’t like to live in a big family. B.the young can’t get enough money to support the old. C.the old are too weak to live with the young. D.different generations have different lifestyles. 14.The fact that the reporter told us shows that _______ A.old people are easy to get along with. B.old people in America enjoy banana bread. C.she had no time to take care of her children. D.old people in America lead a hard life. 15.By saying “Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure” the author means . A.old people had never seen her baby before B.the baby was clever and beautiful C.the baby brought old people the image of life D.the baby’s mother would take care of them 第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,共 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上 将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 If there is a building which symbolizes a country --- such as the Eiffel Tower for France and Sydney Opera House for Australia, then it has to be the Taj Mahal for India. __ 16 __From the time they got married, they wouldn’t be separated.
