Nicolai Calabria has already become one of the best 106-pound wrestlers. He has successfully climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, and most importantly, he’s changed the attitude of any normal person who watches him compete.
The 17-year-old teenager has one leg. He was born that way, but his goal is to show it’s not the one thing that defines him. He would also be the first one to tell you that he just wants to prove to others and himself that he’s just like other normal ones.
When Calabria was young, his parents tried different prostheses(假肢)to find out which was most comfortable for their son as he tried to keep up with a family, who has a preference for sports.
At first, the Calabrias had their middle child in a prosthesis that looked and functioned like a “real” leg, but soon they decided to choose a different path when they found it wasn’t beneficial to his movement. Then the family moved him to arm crutches(手杖)and from there a new burst of energy was found.
Getting others to believe that he could take off on the soccer field took a little bit longer. When the Calabrias moved to Concord, they had a hard time convincing the town soccer program to allow a child like him to compete with able-bodied kids. After months and months of debates and meetings, the family received the answer they were looking for. Since then, witnessing a young man on crutches who competes against those with two legs has become a fixed event in the Concord community.
“At that time I had nothing but discouragement working with the soccer community, however, now I have nothing but admiration for the fact that he’s been allowed to play, and people see that he adds value to game,” his father said. “I just think it’s a great result.”

A.can do what a normal teenager can
B.is realizing as many dreams as he can
C.can make a sport event more valuable
D.can add value to society
22.We can learn from Paragraph 5 that __________.

B.it was not easy for Calabria to be accepted to the town soccer team
C.Calabria’s parents didn’t allow him to play soccer at first
D.there are some other disabled children in the soccer team
23.In Paragraph 5, the underlined part probably means __________.
A.a must-see
B.a planned programme
C.an extra game
D.a special occasion
24.It is implied in the last paragraph that Nicolai’s father __________.
A.has been discouraged since Nicolai played soccer
B.thinks that Nicolai is playing a key role in the team
C.is very delighted that Nicolai can play soccer in the team
D.hasn’t expected that Nicolai can be allowed to play soccer

Some colors people see late at night could cause signs of clinical depression. That was the finding of a study that builds on earlier study findings. They show that individuals who live or work in low levels of light overnight can develop clinical depression. Doctors use the word “clinical depression” to describe severe form of depression. Signs may include loss of interest or pleasure in most activities, low energy levels and thoughts of death or suicide.
In the new study, American investigators designed an experiment that exposed hamsters(仓鼠)to different colors. The researchers chose hamsters because they are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and are active at night.
The animals were separated into four groups. One group of hamsters was kept in the dark during their night-time period. Another group was placed in front of a blue light, a third group slept in front of a white light, while a fourth was put in front of a red light.
After four weeks, the researchers noted how much sugary water the hamsters drank. They found that the most depressed animals drank the least amount of water.
Randy Nelson heads the Department of Neuroscience at Ohio State University. He says animals that slept in blue and white light appeared to be the most depressed. “What we saw is that these animals didn’t show any sleep uneasiness at all but they did mess up biological clock genes and they did show depressive sign while if they were in the dim(微弱)red light, they did not.”
Randy Nelson notes that photosensitive(感光)cells in the eyes have little to do with eyesight. He says these cells send signals to the area of the brain that controls what has been called the natural sleep-wake cycle.
He says there’s a lot of blue in white light. This explains why the blue light and white light hamsters appear to be more depressed than the hamsters seeing red light or darkness.
25.Researchers use hamsters in the experiment because __________.
A.they are similar to humans in dealing with colors
B.they are easy to observe and study
C.they are sensitive to colors like human beings
D.they are active at night and sleep during the day
26.What sign shows that the hamsters are being depressed?
A.They drink less sugary water.
B.They don’t sleep well.
C.Their eyesight becomes worse.
D.Their energy level becomes low.
27.__________ tends to cause hamsters to be depressed.
A.Dim light
B.Red light
C.Blue light
D.Darkness
28.What can help people who work late at night to avoid being depressed?
A.Not being exposed to dim red light when using computers.
B.Equipping their computer screens to put it more in the reddish light.
C.Living or working in low levels of light overnight.
D.Going to see doctors of clinical depression regularly for help.

Welcome to the world of multitasking — a place where the measure of a person is how many jobs they can perform at the same time. In fact, if experts are to be believed, multitasking is a disastrous idea.
One of the opponents of multitasking is Dr. Clifford Nass, a professor at Stanford University. “People who multitask frequently are less able to pay attention; they’re worse at managing their memory.” he said. In his opinion, the loss that we get with multitasking is harmless in some situations, for example, part of doing business in the digital world: but you can’t do serious work like writing, thinking or solving an important problem this way. You do worse even as you think you’re doing better. All the time the research points to a simple fact: the brain cannot cope. When you stop midway through composing a report to check an email, you force your brain to stop and regroup. It is like pressing the pause button during a movie, meaning the film takes longer to watch.
And as for Dr. Nass, the problems extend beyond the brain. Young people who frequently multitask are not as socially and emotionally healthy as those who don’t. They just feel more emotionally satisfied and the feeling is so good and they are bound to desire it again. Todd Oppenheimer, a writer said “We’ve become a very short-term society and don’t reward people for taking a lot of time on something.” He fears we may end up losing the next generation of great thinkers. “It’s really unfortunate because the long-term challenges of our world — environmental issues, financial issues — require people to think wisely about the long-term consequences of what they do. And it’s no coincidence that the kind of people who do think long-term don’t multitask.”
29.According to Dr. Nass, multitasking __________.
A.makes the performance emotionally affected only
B.contributes to memorizing various things
C.may result in losing the next generation of great thinkers
D.can be performed using digital tools
30.From the passage, we can tell __________.
A.the loss that we get with multitasking is harmless
B.we mistakenly believe that we’re doing better by switching between tasks
C.doing multitasking does harm to us in every area
D.for every task you add to your multitasking, you can finish your goal quicker
31.Which of the following is a multitasking addict?
A.You turn your cellphone to silence when you’re out to dine with friends.
B.You watch from start to finish without distraction when playing a DVD.
C.You have your office desk covered with paperwork from various unfinished projects.
D.You feel that when you try to do too much at once, the result always suffers.
32.The author mainly wants to tell us __________.
A.the less you switch, the better you do
B.it is more efficient to do things all in a mixed way
C.it takes longer for us to become a great thinker
D.we shouldn’t be lazy if we want to accomplish many tasks

Of all my teachers, Mr. Smith is the one who impresses me most. Because he is 54, he looks very young at his age. And he’s one of the most popular teachers m our school. Compared with other teacher, Mr. Smith pays more attention to his way of teaching. He tries various ways to make his class lively and interestingly. In his opinion, we would not only know “what”, but also understand “why”. So, instead of giving us answers immediately, he encourages us to think by themselves whenever he puts forward questions. Dear Editor,
We took part in a voluntary activity organized by our school last Sunday. We gathered at the Culture Square, passing leaflets to passers-by from which they can learn what the earthquake is and how to protect themselves against the earthquake. The leaflets drew the attention of the public to the damage that an earthquake can cause and told them to take action in a right and efficient way. Some made a public speech, telling people about the best place they can hide when an earthquake occurs.
We have learned much from the voluntary activity, which offers us an opportunity to contribute to society. We told the public about the situation because we thought everyone should be concerned about each other and take responsibility for promoting a public cause.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

1.W: John, why don’t you watch NBA games on TV?
M: Oh, I’m studying for a Chinese test tomorrow.
2.M: Where is Adam? He was supposed to meet us here half an hour ago, but he hasn’t come yet.
W: I’ve just phoned and we’ve had a quarrel. He was busy with the contract and didn’t notice the time.
3.M: May I help you?
W: Yes, I’d like to apply for a loan. We need the loan to build an addition to our house.
M: All right. I’ll give you an application form. You can fill it out here, or take it home if you like.
4.M: Hello, Kate. Do you know how many students will go to the mountain?
W: Our monitor said that the whole class will go except Tom. He has something urgent to do. That is, 20 students.
M: Oh, 18 students have been there by now.
5.W: Chris, did you know about Gemma Hudson? Have you heard that she’s leaving?
M: Really? How do you know that?
W: She told me. She’s leaving next month.
M: Actually, I’m not surprised. I didn’t think she was very happy working here.
6.W: What is the tall building over there?
M: It’s the library, which houses over half a million books. It also has computer labs and quiet study spaces.
W: And the building next to it?
M: That’s the computer center. The IT facilities are really advanced there. Some of its classrooms are open 24 hours a day.
W: Is there a sports center on campus?
M: Of course. The sport facilities are excellent. A stadium is on the northeast side of the campus. A 50-metre swimming pool is just beside it. There is a football match this afternoon. Let’s go there and have a look.
7.W: So, do you like watching the World Cup?
M: Um, no. I can’t stand it.
W: Mmm, I hate it too. But I want to watch the World Cup Final this weekend. But our TV won’t work.
M: I can’t play, that’s my problem. If I’m not very good at a sport, I don’t like watching it.
W: So, what do you like, then?
M: I play golf.
W: Oh, right. My husband plays too. I’m not interested in it, though. I go horse riding.
M: I’d love to have a go at riding if I have time. I bet it’s good fun.
8.M: So, Sally, we should probably start thinking about our winter vacation plans.
W: Yeah, I think we should fly down to Florida for a couple of weeks.
M: Uh, I’d really prefer not to. Those holiday travel packages cost way too much.
W: Well, how about skiing up at Sky Valley Resort for a week or so?
M: I’d rather not. We did it last year. Remember?
W: And we had a really good time. Do you have any suggestions?
M: Umm… you know, I never have any good ideas.
W: OK. Here’s something different. How about going to the New Year’s Eve party in New York City? We’ve always wanted to do that.
M: But I don’t really like big parties. They’re always crowded.
W: You’re driving me crazy, Tom! All right. Let’s just stay home for two weeks!
M: No way! That sounds too boring! Can’t you think of anything else?
9.W: Andy, are you busy at the moment?
M: Oh, hi. Well, actually I’m expecting an important call from the office any minute but go ahead.
W: I’m sorry, but it’s really important. It’s about the car. It was broken into last night…
M: Oh, no!
W: I want to know if you saw or heard anything.
M: Did I see anything? Where?
W: In the road. Did you see anybody looking suspicious?
M: No, I don’t think I looked out of the window.
W: Can you remember if you heard anything? They can’t have done it completely silently. I came back
late from a party and I parked it at about 11:30, and then I had a shower and went to bed.
M: No, I’m sorry. What have they taken?
W: Well, this morning I found the driver’s window smashed. There’s glass everywhere, and the CD player has gone.
M: How annoying! Is anything else missing?
W: Well, it could have been worse. Luckily, there wasn’t much in the car anyway.
10.M: In today’s lecture we’ll begin with Doxey’s model for the socio-cultural impact of tourism. He identifies four stages.
He identifies the first stage as happiness. Because initially the tourists are regarded as a new and interesting thing.
As tourist development begins to increase, some sections of the local population become involved with tourists while others don’t, and it is increasingly the case that commercial rather than social factors are influencing relationships between tourists and the host community. People are less interested in the tourists for their own sake. This is identified as the second stage by Doxey.
If development continues to increase, the hosts get annoyed with the tourists, and this is the third stage.
Well, development of the tourist area may start to get out of control, which is going to make life difficult for local people. So the policy makers, the government, the local authorities, and so on, provide more roads, more car parks and so on to try to help cope with the coming of tourists. But the lives of the local people are made increasingly difficult and in the final stage of the model, the hosts show unkindness to the tourists.
