Experts hope an experimental drug can be as effective against the novel coronavirus in people as it has been on cells in a controlled lab environment.
The US drug, remdesivir(瑞德西韦), began clinical trials on patients in Wuhan, Hubei province, on Thursday. Other medications, including chloroquine, arbidol and darunavir have also recently been found capable of arresting viral growth in lab cells, but like remdesivir they require more clinical trials to confirm their safety and potency on humans.
The Phase III trials for remdesivir have been approved by China's National Medical Products Administration and is conducted by the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences on patients at the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital.
A total of 761 patients will participate in two trials-one trial to assess the drug's potency on 308 cases with mild or moderate infection, and the other on 453 severely infected patients, Cao Bin, head of the clinical trial and vice-president of the friendship hospital, said on Wednesday.
Cao said studies have shown remdesivir is effective in inhibiting the growth of the novel coronavirus in vitro(在生物体外), meaning the procedure was done on cells in a controlled environment outside of a living organism, typically in a petri dish or test tube.
But the drug has yet to show convincing clinical evidence that it can translate its positive in vitro results into actual human patients. Hence, it will require rigorous clinical testing, Cao said.
A 35-year-old patient from the United States infected with the virus was reported seeing noticeable improvement with no obvious side effects after taking the drug, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.
Gilead Sciences, the maker of remdesivir, said in a recent statement that it has been working with government agencies on the novel coronavirus response efforts.
However, the company stressed that remdesivir is an experimental medicine that has only been used in a handful of patients on compassionate grounds, "so we do not have an appropriately robust understanding of the effect of this drug to warrant broad use at this time".
28. Why does the US drug, remdesivir, began clinical trials?
A. To replace the traditional medicine.
B. To confirm their safety and potency on humans.
C. To show whether remdesivir is effective in inhibiting the growth of the novel coronavirus in vitro
D. To see how it takes effect.
29. What is true according to the passage?
A. After taking the drug, a 35-year-old patient was infected with the virus.
B. Doctors had seen apparent success treating a 35-year-old patient infected with the virus.
C. Remdesivir can cure those who are infected with the novel coronavirus.
D. Chinese Hospital does The Phase III trials independently.
30. What’s the author attitude towards the clinical trial of remdesivir?
A. Negative.
B. Critical.

from home has been a long-held dream for many employees craving more flexible work arrangements and comfort. With the fantasy coming true because of the novel coronavirus outbreak, however, quite a few people find it less romantic than expected.
Amid the ongoing epidemic, a large number of Chinese companies have ordered employees to work from home, looking to control the spread of the virus as staff members return from the Spring Festival travel rush.
Allowing employees to work from home — even if they are not symptomatic — and enabling virtual meetings could help limit the spread of the virus and assuage employee fears about exposure, he added.
But there's another side to the coin. As millions of people started to work at home, people found video communication difficult. Many telecommuting platforms, including DingTalk, an all-in-one mobile workplace from Alibaba, went through temporary outages due to surging demand.
Fu Yangang, a product manager at a house trading company in Beijing, found he couldn't receive any messages from colleagues during an online meeting at home on Tuesday, and neither could they. Similar problems arose when they switched to Zoom, a California-based video communication app which provides remote conferencing services.
Residences filled with distractions such as spouses, parents, kids or pets set up another obstacle for many employees working from home. Xia Baiqi, who works for an internet company in Beijing, was required to stay at home in Jilin province until Feb 10, but has found what was an oft-wished for working style a hindrance to productivity.
Her parents, who don't have much to do, suddenly became concerned about her job and asked many questions. "I love my mom and dad, but their current behavior just adds stress and strain," she said. "Sometimes I have to lock myself in my own room to avoid their enthusiasm."
For people who are able to stay as productive as they would in an office environment, they came across a different problem: "surprisingly" longer working time at home. Working for an investment company in Shanghai, Zhang Fei felt he
could never escape from his job working at home in Shandong province, which makes time management a whole lot messier.
"There is no longer a 'work' and 'no work' time. My work comes calling at all hours, which can keep me at a frenetic pace," he said. With the return date drawing closer, he said, he never felt so excited about being back at the office.
32. Why many people can work from home in China?
A. Because many employees think it is a fantasy idea.
B. Because the employers think more highly of working from home than traditional working.
C. Because the novel coronavirus occurred.
D. Because a large number of Chinese companies want to avoid the Spring Festival travel rush.
33. What’s the meaning of the underline word in ?
A. to increase
B. to ease
C. to give up
D. to find
34. Which following statement is right?

B. Xia Baiqi’s parents could give her more constructive advice.
C. Xia Baiqi locked herself in her own room to avoid distractions.
D.By saying "There is no longer a 'work' and 'no work' time. ” , Zhang Fei meant he can work less time when at home.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You have the basics down: doing laundry, keeping the bathroom clean, wiping the kitchen counter tops — but dirt and grime have a bad habit of collecting in the strangest places, including the ones you don’t think to look. ____36____
Clean off doorknobs and handles
You probably don’t think to clean off the doorknobs and handles around your home very often. ___37____When you think about how often we touch the door knobs and handles in our homes, especially with dirty hands or on the way in or out of the bathroom, you may even choose to make a habit of it.
____38____
Considering how often we use our phones, and where we use them, our phones deserve a more thorough cleaning from time to time. Keeping your device clean works in your favor in other ways too — it keeps your screen clean and easy to read.____39____
Wash your pillows
You may not know it, but most pillows are designed to be machine washable. And it’s a good thing too, considering pillows tend to be exactly where dead skin, dust, drool and in many cases, dust mites love to hang out.
___40____ For people with compromised immune systems or who have allergies, they can be an irritant that makes for sleepless nights, skin irritation and sinus congestion(鼻窦堵塞).
A. Clean your screen
B. Wipe off your smartphone
C. When’s the last time you did more than just wipe off your smartphone’s screen when it was too smudged to see through?
D. Also it keeps dust and grime out of speaker grates, away from charging ports and out of headphone jacks.
E. For most people, that’s not a huge deal, aside from the fact that they’re putting their face on a dirty pillow at night to sleep.
F. But they’re worth a quick wipe the next time you’re cleaning in the same room.
G. Here are some spots around your house you should consider cleaning more often.
【答案】
36.G 37.F 38.B 39. D 40.E
【解析】
这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了日常清理卫生的几个死角。
【36题详解】
根据下一句中的“ but dirt and grime have a bad habit of collecting in the strangest places, including the ones you don’t think to look. ”可知,该空可引出本文主题:看看下文列出的家中一些你应该考虑更频繁清理的地方.
【37题详解】
前文介绍是“你可能没想过要非常频繁地清洁家中各处的门把手,”选项F的they指代上一句的“ the doorknobs and handles”,故该空应F项“但下次打扫同一个房间时,有必要顺便擦拭一下它们。”
【38题详解】
此空为小标题的形式,故排除C/D/E/F/G,从下文可知,介绍的“our phones deserve a more thorough cleaning from time to time”可知,需要清理的是“smartphone”。
【39题详解】
前文介绍的是保持手机的清洁还会带来其他好处以及“it keeps your screen clean and easy to read”。可知, 选择D“Also it keeps...”
【40题详解】
根据下文中提到的 “For people with compromised immune systems or who have allergies, they can be an irritant”,得知对免疫功能不全或有过敏症的人来说,脏的枕头麻烦事。所以推断前一句“For most people, that’s not a huge deal”,即对多数人来说,这没多大关系。
