需 要 注 意 的 是 for one thing...for another...,some...other(s)...,first...second... 2.找出句子之间的连接性的词语 文章的语句间的组合,除了从语句间的意义关系分析外,还可借助句子之间的连接性词语来 把握,因为连接性词语能表明这个语段句与句之间、层与层之间的基本关系是承接关系(如 so, therefore, thus, hence, accordingly, consequently, as a result 等)、平列关系(如 first, second, third…;firstly, secondly, thirdly…; first, next, then…; in the first place, in the second place…; for one thing, for another thing…;to begin with, to conclude 等),层递关系(如 also, further, furthermore, likewise, similarly, moreover, in addition, what’s more, too, either, neither, not… but…, not only…but also 等)。 练习题 1 Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you want is a little light-hearted entertainment. Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. 1 Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old. The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy, a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie. 2 Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries. 3 The actors change clothes and locations within a single song. But the audience don't mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all. 4 Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can't just run away. They must win over their parents. Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those over-stimulating Hollywood films. 5 They will take you to a brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it's still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love song. But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 1 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes. For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 2 If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 3 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room. 4 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. 5 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions. A. It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online. B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face. C. This helps us decide what to wear. _____1____. We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer. Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale. Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide._____2_____ . The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水银)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts(收缩). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube._____3______. First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap ; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole. ______4______. Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily. ______5____. As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week. A.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives. B.Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled. C.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work. D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher. E.They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100degrees. F.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal 把..粘住) them together. G.People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world. 15 My mother is a diligent and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard. 1 Both my brother and I love her dearly as she loves us. My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. 2 She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times. 3 Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. 4 She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints. Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer. ___71___ Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. ___72___ Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure. ___73___ They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “___74___ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.” Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ___75___ A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger. C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it D. Anger may cause you a cancer. E. Do not express your anger while angry. F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. 17 Ancient Rome was one of the world’s most powerful empires more than 2,000 years ago. While busy preparing for the new semester in the first week back at school, many youngsters have started to wonder what Beijing can learn from Athens. “I was amazed by the fantastic opening ceremony from the moment it began,” said She Fei, a Senior 2 boy from Beijing Huiwen High School. He represented China in Athens and got the chance to see the opening ceremony with his own eyes. “Greece has done such a good job in showing its colorful culture using high-tech methods. 72 ” he said. “It seems that Beijing needs to combine the use of advanced technology with creative design to present its culture to the rest of the world. 73 ” he added. Echoing her view on the challenge of designing an unique opening ceremony, Zhang Yufei, Senior 3 from No. 2 High School attached to Beijing Normal University, thinks that director Zhang Yimo’s presentation of Chinese culture will be out of date by 2008. “Peking Opera costumes and the big red lantern did not seem to surprise the audience in the closing ceremony. 74 ” She said. Other students worry people’s bad habits, 75 , might be the weak point of Beijing 2008. “In Athens, all the residents were very careful with their behavior and manners. I think they have set a good example of Olympic hospitality. Beijingers can learn from them and do better.” She Fei said. A.such as spitting on the ground B.We definitely need something better in 2008. C.Chinese teenagers’ passion for the Olympic has not faded D.Beijing is the best place to host it. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam? Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen’s work. 71 _ What they look for is your presence — to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express her worries and fears, but don’t let them focus on those fears. Help them get organized. 72 Together , you and your teen can work out a time—table in which she can study for what she knows will be on the test. Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect his privacy. Give them a nutritious diet. It is important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do her best. 73 If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches. A healthy diet, rather than junk food, is best for reducing stress. 74 Persuade your teenager to get some sleep and /or do something active when she needs a real break from studying. Making time for relaxation, fun, and exercise are all important in reducing stress. Help your teen balance her time so that she will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest. Show a positive attitude. 75 Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen’s pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for her efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right , no matter what the results are. A. A parent’s attitude will dictate their teen’s emotions. B. Exam stress can make some teens lose their appetite. C. They will only make the situation worse. D. Encourage your teen to relax. E. The best thing is simply to listen. F. Help your teen think about what she has to study and plan accordingly. G. Your teen may also make negative comments about themselves 19 For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans.__71__ Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today.Strauss' invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world. Levi Strauss was born in Germany in 1829.__72__ He grew up in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1847.Before becoming an American citizen and moving to the West in 1853, Strauss worked in his brother's dry goods business. This gave him a chance to produce his famous invention. After the gold rush of 1949, Strauss decided to move to the West to seek his fortunes. Strauss did not want to be a person who searched an area for minerals.Instead, he knew he could make a good living by selling supplies to the miners. At first, he planned to sell sewing supplies and cloth.__73__ When he heard miners complaining that their clothes were easily broken or they usually tore their pockets during mining, he decided to use a special fabric to make pants for the miners. These pants proved so popular that he quickly ran out of materials to make more. In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets( 铆 钉 ) . This made the pants last a long time.Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent.__74__. By the time Strauss died in 1902, he had made a great contribution to American fashion. __75__The business has been growing ever since and Levi Strauss' company is now one of the largest clothing companies in the world. A.As a young boy, he moved with his family to the United States. B.Nobody knew what kind of material was suitable. C.He did and Levi jeans have been made with metal rivets ever since. D.However, he did not get much business for those products. E.He also made a great contribution to America's clothing industry. F.Since they were invented by Levi Strauss, they have become a symbol of American consumer culture. G.As the business grew, Strauss got much money from it. 20 Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago. 1 The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sicknesses. 2 So they are called "diseases of civilization".Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases. Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none. 3 However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today. Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. 4 We eat six times more salt, sugar and fat than our ancestors without using our bodies more. 5 But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food. A.Stone Age people lived a simple life. B.But today, we enjoy having a lot of these. C.In that case, they would live much healthier. D.Ancient people also got lots of physical exercise. E.These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times. F.People today probably don't want to live like our ancestors. G.Modern people used to suffer from "diseases of civilization". 21 For the rest of March, a disease will sweep across the US. It will keep kids home from school. 1 Employees will suddenly lose their ability to concentrate. The disease, known as “March Madness”, refers to the yearly 65-team US men’s college basketball tournament. 2 Teams compete against each other in a single-elimination (单局淘 汰) tournament that eventually crowns a national champion. Nearly 20 million Americans will find themselves prisoners of basketball festival madness. The fun comes partly from guessing the winners for every game. Friends compete against friends. 3 Colleagues against bosses. Big-name schools are usually favored to advance into the tournament. But each year there are dark horses from little-known universities. This adds to the madness. Watching a team from a school with 3,000 students beat a team from a school with 30,000, for many Americans, is an exciting experience. Two years ago, the little-known George Mason University was one of the final four teams. 4 College basketball players are not paid, so the game is more about making a name for their university and themselves. 5 About $ 4 billion will be spent gambling (赌) on the event. According to Media Life magazine, the event will bring in $ 500 million in advertising income this year, topping the post – season income of every US professional league, including that of the NBA. A. Husbands against wives. B. The players will go all out for the games. C. But that doesn’t mean money isn’t involved. D. College students will ignore piles of homework. E. People are willing to spend more money on watching it. F. It begins on March 15 and lasts through the beginning of April. G. Many people had never even heard of the university before the tournament. 22 Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail? At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企 业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒). 1 Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green-eyed monster” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money. 2 Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others – but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this. 3 . But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world’s fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either. “It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.” 4 They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires. 5 .It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them. A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain. B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner. C. As a result, the survey said, entrepreneurs were “unloved, unwanted and misunderstood.” D. It is not true that British people are born jealous of others’ success. E. Some were given a little, others a great deal. F. But instead of being happy they complain that nobody loves them. G. Perhaps it is the entrepreneurs who are the problem. 23 1 When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 2 . The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 3 It included such items as automobiles and new houses. By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “ life-enriching ” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction - the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body - this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 4 On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level? A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 5 In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels. A.Then a third level appeared. B.Human wants seem endless. C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. D.There are several levels of wants in one’s life. E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure. F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. G.Different people have different wants on each level. 24 We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. 1 . So, you have to give a speech—and you are terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble(结结巴巴) over words, you talk too long, and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank Goodness, it’s over. I’m just not good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.” Cheep up! 2 . Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of your time doing your research. Then spend plenty of your time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible, and use pictures, charts, and graphs if they help you make your points more clearly. 3 . Don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience, and the occasion. Be brief. 4 . And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience. If you follow these simple steps, you will see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not convinced yet? 5 . A. It doesn’t have to be that bad. B. Take several deep breaths before your speech. C. This article gives some advice on how to give a good speech. D. Say what you have to say and then stop. E. Don’t give a try to say what you aren’t familiar with. F. Never forget your audience. G. Give it a try and see what happens. 25 There is an English saying:“1._________.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. 2. _________. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. 3.__________. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial. Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated( 忍 耐 ) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. 4._________. 5.__________. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. A. Laughter can prolong one’s life. B. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. C. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain. D. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach and even the feet. E. Although laughter helps cure the disease, doctors still can not put this theory into clinic practice. F. Laughter is the best medicine. G. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health 26 Why do some people have many friends while others do not? 1 However, it is not so. Let’s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company. 2 .The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increase on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others, they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them. 3 After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in the 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all-white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and the other with brown eyes. Other eye colours such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown-eyed people were cleverer than blue-eyed ones because of an agent for brown colour found in their blood. Blue -eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown -eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue-eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown-eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before. 4 .So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their successes and sympathize(同情) with them in their troubles. 5 . A. Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them. B. Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behaviour to you. C. The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore (忽略) others. D. The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others. E. Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behaviour but also their confidence and their performance. F. You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them. G. The second experiment tells us what teachers said has a great effect on the students 27 The seven Cs of a good letter What is the secret of writing a good letter? Here are two main ones. Get rid of any toys with chipped paint, or other broken and damaged parts. Not sure it contains lead? 2 Clean Up: to avoid leaf exposure from sources in the home, keep floors and other play areas clean and free of dust and pieces. 3 Store toys off the floor in a clean place. And if you live in house with lead pipes, running cold water for a few minutes and using a water filter (过滤器) can reduce lead levels. Buy Smart: avoid no-name produce and be careful when you buy items at dollar stores, street fairs, thrift stores or yard sales. 4 Even if they don’t contain lead, they could become a choking hazard(危险). Also make sure the arts and crafts supplies you buy are non-toxic and designed for children’s use. Get Tested: children with lead poisoning may not have easily recognizable symptoms. 5 This might mean that there will be a lot of tests that turn out normal, but it’s better than sitting around and worrying. Testing is especially important if you and your children live in a home with peeling paint or if your home was painted before 1978, when the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the sale of lead-based paints. A. Wash your children’s hands and playthings often. B. The following tips contain common hazards for lead poisoning. C. If a parent is concerned, they should have their kid tested. D. Not all children like being tested. E. Here’s how to make sure your children stay safe. F. When in doubt, throw it out. G. Do not buy jewelry for young children. 33 The sea has always interested man. From it he can get food, minerals, and treasure. 1 But he could not go far beneath its surface. 2 However, he is not a fish. He must breathe air, so he can’t stay under the water’s surface for any length of time. To explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems. A diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. 3 He can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a nose and a mouthpiece. Water weighs 800 times as much as air. Tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. 4 When a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. As he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less. If the diver rises too quickly, the gases in his blood form bubbles(气泡). The diver is then suffering from the bends(潜水夫病). The bends can cause a diver to double up in pain. 5 A. His body is under great pressure. B. Scientists are trying to find more about the sea. C. For thousands of years, he could sail on it. D. They can even kill him. E. He can wear a diving suit and have air pumped to him from above. F. The water pressure can cause a diver to breathe with difficulty. G. Man wants to explore deep into the sea. 34 No. 1 Will the economic climate improve this year? I don't think we will see too much improvement this year, but of course I hope so. How can we have good relationships with others if we don’t even have good relationships with ourselves? The problem might be worse than we expect. Maybe we don’t like ourselves without realizing it. Here is a simple checklist: Is there anything you don’t like about yourself from these lists? Your past: Maybe you have made mistakes in the past which you feel bad about. ___52___. Even if that happened in distant past, your subconscious mind still has a reason not to like yourself. Your background: You might wish that you were born in different family, or that you have different background. ____53_____. They seem to get whatever they want effortlessly because of their background. Your personal traits(特点): You might have some personality traits that you don’t like. Others might have better achievements than you, and no matter how hard you tried, it might seem impossible for you to match them. ______54______. Is there anything that resonate(产生共鸣) with you? All these give reasons to you not to like yourself. That in turn makes it difficult for you to be a good friend to yourself. ______55______. Here are some tips: Forgive yourself Accept things you can’t change Focus on your strengths Write your success stories Stop comparing yourself with others Always be true to yourself A. That is the crucial(关键) first step if we are to have good relationships with others B. You might then think that it’s because you are not smart enough or don’t have enough talents C. You might be disappointed with yourself on why you make such mistakes F. Sometimes you might not believe yourself G. Maybe you could not accept the fact that you are not as lucky as others 37 71 . It crossed New York from Buffalo on Lake Erie Troy to Albany on the Hudson River. ___72 . The canal served as a route over which industrial goods could flow into the west, and materials could pour into the east. The Erie Canal helped New York develop into the nation’s largest city. The building of the canal was paid for entirely by the state of New York. 73 . Between 1825, when the canal was opened, and 1882, when toll charges(过运河费)were stopped, the state collected $121, 461, 891. For a hundred years before the Erie was built, people had been talking about a canal which could join the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. The man who planned the Erie Canal and carried the plan through was De Witt Clinton. Those who were against the canal laughingly called it “Clinton’s Ditch(沟)”. 74 . He and Governor Morris went to Washington in 1812 to ask for help for the canal, but they were unsuccessful. Clinton became governor of New York in 1817, and shortly afterwards, on July 4, 1817, broke ground for the canal in Rome, N. Y. The first part of the canal was completed in 1820. 75 . The length of the canal is 363 miles. A. As the canal grew, towns along its course developed fast B. It cost $ 7, 143, 789, but it soon gained its price many times over C. The Erie Canal was the first important national waterway built in the US D. More workers were needed to build the canal E. Clinton talked and wrote about the canal and drew up plans for it F. To dig the canal benefited Americans G. It joined the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean 38 Why do some people have many friends while others do not? ___71___ However, it is not so . Let ’ s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois(伊利诺斯[美 国州名]), where the experiment took place.A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company.____72_____.The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increased on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others, they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them. ___73___.After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all- white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and other with brown eyes.Other eye colors such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise . Then she told the class that brown-eyed people were cleverer than blue-eyed ones because of an agent(化学作用) for brown color found in their blood.Blue-eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted.Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown-eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue-eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting.Four poor brown-eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before.___74___.So if y ou want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates.Congratulate them on their success and sympathize with them in their troubles.___75___. A.Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them. B.Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behavior to you. C.The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore others. D.The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others. E.Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behavior but also their confidence and their performance. F.You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them. G.The second experiment tells us what teachers said had a great effect on the students. 39 Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese student, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” 56 I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English. First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. 57 However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if you choose a positive attitude. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know. 58 Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter. 59 The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking. Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive( 主 动 的 ) language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. 60. A. The person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears. B. They may try to avoid making similar mistakes next time. C. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. D. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go. E. However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”! F. Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. G. The second reason lies in the reluctance of using what has just been learned. 40 Can you imagine your parents choosing your husband or wife for you? And can you imagine not setting eyes on him or her until your wedding day? This situation is common in India, the Middle East and many parts of Africa. 71 We don't realize that people in other places often get married in very different ways ---and with different motives(动机). 72 A marriage provides a safe and stable home for the husband and wife.It also joins two families, which benefits the couple's parents and makes them happy.Marriage also brings children, making sure the couple will be taken care of in old age.Because a marriage is important for the whole family, some cultures don't let young people choose whom to marry. Just as there are many different reasons for marriage, there are also many different wedding rituals (仪式). 73 In a typical Western wedding, the bride seeks good luck by wearing "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue." Something old represents the past.Something new represents success in the future.Something borrowed reminds the bride she can get help from her friends and family. 74 In Poland, one wedding tradition is not only lucky, but also very practical. The wedding guests pin money to the bride's dress while she is dancing. The money is meant to bring luck and to help the young couple build their new life.In Bermuda, the young couple plants a tree in the yard of their new home.Once they move in, they take good care of the tree , making it grow and blossom. The planting of the tree is a good metaphor(隐喻) for marriage. 75 A.Every culture has its own ways of bringing good luck to the happy couple. B.A truly good marriage is something that grows with care. C.In the United States, parents do not arrange marriages for their children. D.And something blue reminds her to be true to her husband. E.Marriage customs around the world often differ from our own. F.In many countries, marriage is a practical matter. G.Different countries have different cultures. 41 A great life doesn't happen by accident. It is the result of allocating( 分 配 ) your time, energy, thoughts, and hard work towards what you want your life to be. Stop setting yourself up for stress and failure, and start setting up your life to support success and ease. It is the result of using what you get in a creative and thoughtful way, instead of just what comes next. 71 S—Simplify. A great life is the result of simplifying your life. People often misinterpret what simplify means. It's not a way to remove work from your life. 72 In order to create a great life, you will have to make room for it in yours first. E—Effort. A great life is the result of your best effort. Creating it requires that you make some adjustments. It may mean re-evaluating how you spend your time, or choosing to spend your money in a different way. Life will reward your best effort. C—Create priorities(首要事情). A great life is the result of creating priorities. It's easy to spend your days just responding to the next thing that gets your attention, instead of intentionally using the time, energy and money you have in a way that's important to you. 73 R — Remove distractions ( 分 心 ). A great life is the result of removing distractions. 74 Removing distractions can be a difficult concept to many people, since they haven't really considered that there is another way to live. Find ways to free up your mental energy for things that are more important to you. T—Thoughts. 75 Your belief in the outcome will directly determine how successful you are. Motivated people have specific goals and look for ways to achieve them. Believing there is a solution to the same old problems you encounter year after year is vitally important to creating a life that you love. A. When you focus on simplifying your life, you free up energy and time for the work that you enjoy and the purpose for which you are here. B. A great life is the result of having reserves—reserves of things, time, space, energy and money. C. Today, right now, is the right day to start to take a step in the direction of your heart’s desires. D. Up to 75% of your mental energy can be tied up in things that stop you concentrating. E. Now please use “secrets” to fit your own needs and style, and start creating your own great life today. F. A great life is the result of controlling your thoughts so that you accept and allow for the possibility that it actually can happen to you! G. Focus on removing the obstacles that get in the way of you making sure you are honoring your priorities. 42 71 .She described all the things she had to do -one was to make her bed-from the moment she woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I’d been raised by wolves in a forest. 72. Two weeks later she went into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years-and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what?” she said. “I don’t dry my dishes anymore, either.” 73 .One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle (原理) about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade – offs. The problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. 74 . So what is the solution? There’s an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise, leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. 75 .The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano. Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill more of your time with want – to – dos instead of have – to – dos. A. This woman had made two major breakthroughs (突破). B. Above all, you needn’t do anything for yourself regularly. C. They put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own. D. However, she went along with my idea. E. Most people do not take time to relax themselves. F. The point is to do something for yourself every day. G. A patient came to see me about the stress in her life. 43 I live in Japan, where electronic items are a way of life, so it is no surprise that many students carry these little electronic dictionaries. E-dictionaries may be light and compact(简洁的) more so than any paper dictionary. 71___ It depends on which one you buy. To me, these are pretty much the limits to their advantages. I think e-dictionaries should be limited in their use in classrooms. 72____ E-dictionaries are much more expensive. In Japan, they cost as little as 10,000 yen (US$100)much as 40,000 yen, depending on how many functions you want (or think you want) and depending on how fashionable you are. My trusty Random House paper dictionary is copyrighted at1995, cost me a mere US$12.95 plus tax. E-dictionaries are more fragile(易碎的 ). Drop your paper dictionary. Go ahead. Hold it above your head and drop it. 73 E-dictionaries need batteries. Batteries are temperature sensitive. Batteries cost money, too. E-dictionaries have keypads. Typing in the spelling of a word is harder and more time consuming than looking through pages and using the index at the top of each page. _74____ Such little devices beep(嘟嘟声) when you press the buttons, but it is very disturbing to some people in a classroom situation or library. Finally, let’s consider making corrections or additions. No dictionary is perfect, paper version or electronic. However, when you find something you’d like to change in the e-dictionary, you can’t do anything about it. You can pencil in some notes with the paper type. Similarly, if you learn a word that isn’t in the dictionary, a few notes of a pencil make it easy to increase its memory capacity. __75__ And, for those students whose habit is to mark certain words with a highlight pen for ease of future reference, again, the paper dictionary wins out. A.But it is impossible to do so with a keypad model B.They may even contain more words and expressions C.Sometimes e-dictionaries trouble you and you really don’t know how to get rid of them D.Now, try this with any lightweight plastic e-dictionary, and you’ll be picking up the pieces E.That huge, heavy paper dictionary that you see in your library looks like a building block in size and weight. F.E-dictionaries have advantages as well as disadvantages G.Let’s take a look at the following reasons 44 A punctual (准时的)person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment. __71_____He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again , but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things.___72______.The unpunctual man is for ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable assets as well as the assets of others'. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters or return calls or keep appointments promptly.____73____. He knows that he can not get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully attends to every piece of work when it has to be attended to . Failure to be punctual in keeping one's appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time,he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. ___74_____. Unpunctuality, moreover,is very harmful when it comes to doing one's duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time.__75____ A. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful with his time and seldom complains because he lacks it. B. The unpunctual man,on one hand, never does what he should do ahead of time. C. In fact, time is life itself. D. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men. E. The unpunctual man,on one hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. F. All guests present ought to be respected by the host. G. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present. 45 “______71_______ It all depends on your personality,” said British naturalist Richard Mabey. “Personality shapes your view of the season,” he said. “You may see it as a fading away, a packing up(结束), or as a time of packing in another sense –the gathering of resources before a long journey.” ______72_______ About November, he wrote: No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees November! On the other hand, another English poet John Keats, already sensing he was seriously ill, was inspired by a late September day to pen one of the most famous poems in the English language, To Autumn. ______73_______ According to Richard Mabey, Keats has the biological evidence on his side. _______74_______ For example, just at the moment that Keats's “gathering swallows” (in To Autumn) are departing for Africa, millions of creatures are fleeing from the frozen north like Iceland, Greenland and Russia to winter along the east and south coasts of Britain. People might argue that it is the coloring of the leaves and their eventual fall that make people feel sad about autumn. But no one is sure why trees drop their leaves in the first place. It may be likely to rid the poisonous material trees collect over the summer. _______75_______ A century after Keats, the American poet Loren Eiseley wrote in his journal: “Suppose we saw ourselves burning like maples in a golden autumn. And suppose we could disintegrate(瓦解) like autumn leaves…Would not our attitude towards death be different?” A. Autumn is not a time of slowing down, but a time of new beginnings and great movements of creatures. B. He wrote to a friend afterwards that there was something comforting and healing about autumn. C. Keats thought we should take a negative attitude towards death. D. Autumn means different to different people. E. If this is true, perhaps it tells us a little about, for instance, Thomas Hood, the 19th Century English poet. F. More likely, it is a way of reducing the loss of water, which tree roots find hard to take in from cold soil. G. The fall of tree leaves is more likely to make people sad. 46 Body language is the quiet, secret and most powerful language of all. It is said that our body movements communicate about 50% of what we really mean while words themselves only express 7%. So, while your mouth is closed, just what is your body saying… Arms.____71_____ If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on whatever comes your way. _____72______ If someone upsets you, just cross your arms to show you’re unhappy. Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. If you are monitor in class, you can take on this position when you want your words to be taken seriously. _____73_____ Legs. Your legs tend to move around a lot more than normal when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still. Posture. A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. _____74_____ This makes breathing more difficult, which in turn can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable. Mouth. When you are thinking, you often purse (皱拢) your lips. You might also use this position to hold back all angry comment you don’t wish to show. _____75______ A.If you are feeling down, you normally don’t sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. B.If you are pleased, you usually open your eyes wide and people can notice this. C.Outgoing people generally use their arms with big movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. D.How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are to people you meet. E.However, it will probably still be noticed, and people will know you’re not pleased. F.However, to be friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little to one side. G.Don’t say too much when you’re happy. 47 May the first is an important date in the college admission process in the United States. This is the last day for high school seniors to accept or reject offers of admission in the fall. But according to a recent report, there is a great change. Acceptance rates at the top colleges this year were lower than ever. 71 These days, college applicants are applying to more colleges because online and common applications make the process easier. 72 On the other hand, deciding students for top colleges to accept can be difficult because it takes much time. Students may not like being put on waiting lists. Also, common colleges work more to get the students they accept to accept them. Some colleges hold visiting days that offer a chance to attend classes and stay overnight. Some universities send gifts. 73 For many families, the most important thing colleges can do is show them the money, especially this year; the weak economy makes parents nervous. 74 The recent problems that spread from the housing market to credit markets have even affected student’s loans. So lately, top schools have to spare lots of money to increase their financial aid for students. 75 The Education Department expects the number of high school graduates to start to go down. This will happen as the last of the children of the baby boom generation finish high school. The number is not expected to start rising again until 2015. A. Besides, top colleges are facing changes in the population. B. What contributes to it? C. But a mistake can be costly if it happens. D. But top colleges ignore them. E. They have international students who know English. F. It can mean several acceptances to choose from. G. They cannot afford college as planned. 48 51 . Desmond is a young and promising athlete. Unfortunately, a British study has found that this practice could have negative long term effects, such as high blood pressure in adulthood. Between 1993 and 1995,Atul Singhal of the Institute of Child Health and his colleagues researched 299 full-term newborns, each of whom weighed very little for their age. The babies’ moms had decided not to breastfeed(用母乳喂养). ___72____ The rest received a formula with more nutrients and 28 percent more protein than the standard formula. The growth of all of these children was compared to that of 175 similarly low birthweight babies whose mothers had chosen to breastfeed their children for their first 9 months. __73___ They found 83 babies from the normal-formula group, 70 babies from the extra-formula group, and 95 babies from the breast fed group. __74____ According to the latest data, children who had received the extra formula had significantly higher blood pressures than those in the other two groups. Seven human test have indeed shown that when infants are overfed before being stopped breastfeeding, they have an increased possibility to become fat as youngsters. No matter how big a child is at birth, he or she will probably reach the same adult height no matter how quickly the baby grows. But reaching one’s adult size at a slow-to-moderate speed may have a lot of benefits, as Singhal says. __75___ A. Half of these children were given a normal infant(幼儿)formula for 9 months B. When they grow up, they might have high blood pressure. C. These babies have very little energy because they are so small. D. Six to eight years later, the researchers gave the children a series of measurements and tests. E. The results were quite surprising. F. Tiny babies will grow much slower if they are not specially fed. G. His advice to parents: Be patient. Don’t rush a child’s growth. 50 Many people think of guys as being carefree when it comes to their appearance. But in fact, a lot of guys spend plenty of time in front of the mirror. They care just as much as girls do about their body image. Body image is a person’s opinions and feelings about his or her own body and physical appearance. 71 . You appreciate your body for its capabilities and accept its imperfections. 72 . Here are some ideas: Recognize your strengths. Different body types are good for different things. What does your body do well? Maybe your speed, strength, or coordination makes you better than others at a certain sport.
