德阳市2019高考英语二轮短文类训练(20) 及答案或解析 ‎ During the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the London District of South-wark was prosperous (繁荣的), and a very important and farreaching development was happening at Bankside, an area situated just beside the church now known as Southwark Cathedral. The Rose Theatre, the Swan, the Hope Playhouse and Bear‎ ‎Garden were set up here along with the famous Globe Theatre, in which Shakespeare acted. William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright whose body of works is considered the greatest in English litera ture. He is commemorated (纪念) in Southwark Cathedral today by the modern memorial window in the south aisle (通道). The window was designed by Christopher Webb in 1954, after an earlier window had been destroyed in the war. Below it is a figure of Shakespeare, carved by Henry McCarthy in 1912, set against a background of seventeenth-century Southwark in relief (浮雕), showing the Globe Theatre, Winchester Palace and the Tower of St. Saviour's Church. This memorial was provid- ed by public support and was dedicated (奉献) in 1911, and every year a birthday service, attended by many great actors and actresses, is held here in honour of Shakespeare's genius. Shakespeare's brother Edmund was buried here in 1607, and, although the position of Edmund's grave is unknown, he is commemorated by an inscribed (刻写的) stone. ‎ ‎1. Bees are special because they divide up their work. Each bee has a certain job to do. ‎ The busiest bee is the worker. Workers build the nest, called a hive. Inside the hive, workers make a honeycomb from wax(蜂蜡). They store honey there for food. Workers are always cleaning and fixing the hive. Drones are male bees, and their job is to fly with the queen bee and mate with her. After the queen mates, the worker bees drive the drones away. The drones then starve to death. ‎ The third kind of bee is the queen. Each hive needs only one queen, and her job is laying eggs. She can lay as many as 2, 000 eggs a day. ‎ ‎1.
