He stopped a few kids returning home from the local school and took their exam paper and asked them a few questions. Shockingly, he made a shocking discovery----the students, even the older ones, knew nothing about reading except the alphabet. And that left him thinking that something should be done for these children. ‎ So he invited the kids to visit his workshop every evening, where he set up a temporary classroom with metal desks. The shabby school started off with 10 students. Today, the Footpath‎ ‎School has a total of 155 students and many of the kids that Parmar has taught in the past 15years have gone to attend college and build successful careers. ‎ Despite having studied only till the seventh grade, he has been able to teach the kids by inventing creative techniques. He asks them to read first and then to form questions on their own and read them out. In this way, many kids learn all seven subjects in six months. ‎ Parmar’s family are very supportive of his project and are proud to see how much of an impact he has had on the kids. His students love him. Ten of his ex-students are currently serving as teachers at the school and he doesn’t have to employ any teachers. ‎ For those who are inspired by his story, but can’t actually volunteer at school, Parmar has a simple piece of advice: “Try to educate just one child a year, and see the difference it makes to the society.” ‎ ‎24. Why did Parmar start the school?‎ A. To earn some extra money. B. To become a good teacher. ‎ C. To make himself famous. D. To help the poor kids with their education.‎ ‎25. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A. The students’ terrible school exam result. B. The students’ bad living conditions. ‎ C. The students’ poor reading ability. D. The students’ lack of basic life skills. ‎ ‎26. Which words can be used to describe Parmar?‎ A. Selflessly and imaginative B. Diligent and intelligent C. Modest and patient D. Humorous and rich ‎27. Parmar’s advice in the last paragraph is to call on more people to .‎ A. contribute more money to schools B. work in his own factory C. teach poor kids D. listen to his stories C Life affects friendships. As we grow, marry, fight in wars, move across the country or change jobs, old friendships fall away and new ones form. As long as we live, the things around us change, and as long as things change, friendships are affected.‎ When we were children, we had best friends. No matter what happened we were still friends. We live our lives, however, and do what life calls for us to do, and as we got older, memories fade, faces blur(变得模糊),and even friend’s names from childhood are forgotten.‎ Do you have a question about friendship? Do you wonder what to do with a friend who is no longer friendly? Perhaps you will see that you can't control others. If someone wants to be your friend, it is their choice. All you can do is treat them well and do the best for them when you are with them. Then you wish them well when they leave.‎ You can talk to old timers and they will tell you that life is full of incredible(令人难以置信的)joy and incredible sorrow, and that what bothers you today will one day becomes a memory and the pain will be gone. Seniors might tell you that you will learn more as you get older. They will tell you that friendships come and friendships go. Sometimes when they go it will hurt, but you will be okay with it. It's the way life works, after all.‎ 28. What can we learn about friendship, according to the text?‎ A. Friendship cannot be easily affected by one's family.‎ A. Friends are always around us and will never go away.‎ B. Friends in childhood are sometimes forgotten by us.‎ C. Friends in childhood are the best no matter what happens.‎ 28. What to do with friends who are no longer friendly in the author's opinion?‎ A. Care about them and do the best for them when we are together.‎ B. Forget them and make new friends who have a lot in common with us.‎ C. Find the reason why our friendship has changed.‎ D. Do our best to control them and make them listen to us.‎ ‎30. What the old timers and seniors in the last paragraph tell you about friendship will .‎ A. make you have no good friends ‎ B. help you have healthy understanding of friendship C. remind you to always help your friends ‎ D. lead you to be a powerful man ‎31. The best title of the passage could be .‎ A. How to share happiness with friends. B.How to deal with unfriendly people C.How to make good friends D.How to face the changes in friendship D According to a report by the United Nations,54 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas and it predicts that by 2050,this figure will have increased to around 70 percent. But as more and more people migrate from the countryside to the city to get better opportunities, they can end up with nowhere to live.‎ This is true in places such as Rio de Janeiro, where migrants can’t rent or buy a home, and they end up building their own communities and houses on unoccupied land. These are called shanty towns—poor communities where the houses are built out of cheap materials—and often don’t have any electricity or water supply.‎ These are, of course, not the megacities (大城市) of the future we want to see, Some serious urban planning is needed to make our cities of the future good, safe and modern places to live in. This involves improving the infrastructure (基础设施), the housing conditions and also the opportunities for education and employment.‎ Something urban planners are looking at now is the creation of “smart cities”. According to John Rossant, founder and chairman of the non-profit organization New Cities Foundation, technology is the way forward. He thinks that it’s generally accepted that “cloud computing, ubiquitous internet, robust 5G networks, etc, will transform our cities.” He says technology is really “a game changer ” in urbanization(城市化).It would collect large amounts of data about how a city is ‎ performing and may improve how a city functions.‎ This may sound like a utopian (乌托邦似的) view. For now, some big cities around the world are trying out more low—tech schemes to try and make them desirable places to live and work in. Building shared—ownership housing and improving public transport are some ways. And encouraging cycling and building bike lanes can keep the population healthy and cut down on smog. What would make your city a better place to live in?‎ ‎32. What’s the text mainly about?‎ A. The city of the future. B. The increase of the population.‎ C. Urban construction. D. The function of smart cities.‎ ‎33. Why does the author mention Rio de Janeiro in Paragraph 2?‎ A. To show the growth of the world population.‎ B. To show the problems in urbanization.‎ C. To show poor living conditions of the city.‎ D. To show financial trouble of the city.‎ ‎34. What plays an important role in the creation of smart cities? ‎ A. Technology. B. Urban planning.‎ C. The infrastructure of the city. D. Opportunities for education. ‎ ‎35. What can we know from the last paragraph?‎ A. High-tech plans can be easily realized. ‎ B. Public transport is well developed in cities.‎ C. Shared-ownership houses make no sense. ‎ D. Ways of low-tech are available at present.‎ 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. He now stays in the USA.
