Many seniors feel pressured to go straight from high school to college, but Camden Olson, who graduated from the Latin School of Chicago in the US last year, didn’t give in. She decided to spend a gap year-taking a year off before college-raising a guide dog for Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Maine. The non - profit provides trained guide dogs to blind and visually - impaired (视力障碍的) people. “This is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Olson said.
It is becoming more and more popular among American teenagers to have a gap year. Some students use the year off to figure out what they want to do: travel the world or save money for college.
Olson is using her time to follow a passion she’s had since 7th grade. For years, she kept an eye on guide dog services until she came across the opportunity at Guiding Eyes. With support from her friends, family and teachers, Olson went for it. Olson’s volunteer work centers around Derby, a one-year-old black dog.
“My job is to raise him to be well-mannered and socialized,” she said. “Guide dogs can’t be distracted. They go everywhere with their visually-impaired owner. They give a blind person a lot of support, too.”
Of course, there’s an end in sight for Derby and Olson’s close bond. When Derby celebrates his own graduation, Olson will have to say goodbye to him.
“No doubt there will be tears, but, if he passes, I will be so happy for him to
become a working dog,” she said.
While some do not agree that gap years are a good choice, Olson said she’s seen major success. In fact, she’ll be attending Princeton University soon and is thinking about majoring in biology.
“I think I’m already so much more mature than I was,” she said. “So many kids come back from gap years a lot more focused and prepared.”
25. Why did Camden Olson decide to spend her gap year working for Guiding Eyes?
A. Because her parents talked her into doing it.
B. Because many of her peers had already chosen to do so.
C Because it had been her dream for a long time.
D. Because it would help her to make her experienced in work.
26. According to Olson, guide dogs should ________.
a. not be easily distracted
b. be well-mannered and easy-going
c. know how to play some tricks for their owners
d. give their visually impaired people support
e. protect their blind people from all possible dangers
A. a, b, c B. a, b, d C. b, c, e D. b, d, e
27. How did Olson feel when she said goodbye to Derby?
A. Quite happy. B. Sad but glad.
C. Regretful and sad. D. Nervous and disappointed.
28. What does Olson think about the idea of a gap year?
A. It makes people better prepared for the future.
B. Whether it’s good or not depends on the person.
C. Its negative side outweighs its positive side.
D. It makes sure of a student’s success at college.
C
Do you ever throw away food at home? Have you ever thought about what happens to the food that shops and supermarkets don't sell? Well, you might be shocked to find out that about one third of food produced for humans gets wasted. What's more, around 800 million people in the world don't live a healthy life for lack of food.
Many people in the UK and across the world are trying to do something with this situation. They are trying their best to make use of eatable food that is thrown away.
For example, there is a coffee bar in Leeds (UK) whose meals are all cooked with
unsold food from supermarkets. The spare food is turned into delicious food to feed the hungry people of Leeds. Customers just pay what they can afford or help the bar wash something. In just ten months,10,000 people were fed at this bar.
Besides, the UK's first food waste supermarket opened last year. The supermarket works on a “pay as you feel” basis. Customers pay whatever they want. Some lowincome families have said that it has changed their lives.
“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Spare food from supermarkets such as dairy, vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry schoolchildren whose families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch.
More coffee bars like Leeds are being opened in other parts of the UK such as Bristol and Manchester, and it is now becoming a worldwide event.
I think this is an amazing step as food waste is one of the world's biggest problems. I also believe that the law should be changed,so that supermarkets don't throw away so much good food.
29. What does the author think of the coffee bar's action?
A. He thinks it very good. B. He is worried about it.
C. He is doubtful about it. D. He thinks it interesting.
30. What's the goal of “Fuel for School”?
A. Help poor kids choose healthy food to eat. B. Deal with bad food from supermarkets.
C. Make kids perform well in their study. D. Feed students from poor families.
31. Which of the following does the author advise?
A. We buy food based on our ability. B. More coffee bars are opened in Leeds.
C. Restaurants offer children food for free. D. Governments take action to reduce food waste.
32. What is the best title of the text?
A. The Problem of Food Waste Should Be Solved
B. Fuel for School Offers Food to The Poor
C. Different Actions to Solve the Problem of Food Waste in UK
D. Spare Food From Supermarkets Is Thrown Away

What's safer? Using a numeric PIN code(数字密码)to unlock your smartphone or relying on a swipe(滑动)pattern? New research suggests that, at least when someone
close by could be looking over your shoulder, you might be safer with an old-fashioned PIN.
The research by the United States Naval Academy and the University of Maryland tested what could best secure smartphones from so-called "shoulder surfing attacks". So, if you are worried about someone looking over your shoulder while you unlock your phone, would you be wiser to use a PIN or a pattern? According to this research at least, the answer to that question is pretty clear.
Those who have a single observation of your screen as you unlock it with a swipe pattern will be successful in knowing it 64.2% of the time. Security can be improved somewhat by removing lines on the pattern lock (35.3% success rate for shoulder surfers).
By comparison, the use of a six-digit PIN greatly reduces the chances for an attacker to determine how to unlock your smartphone, with just 10.8% of attacks being successful. In tests, viewers were able to determine the users' lock-screen patterns from up to six feet away, from a variety of different angles, even after a single viewing.
Indeed, when it comes to safety, past research has determined that an unlock pattern is about the same as a three-digit PIN -something I hope that none of us would rely upon.
The researchers' conclusion is that a PIN of six digits or more is the most secure de fence against shoulder surfing attacks, and while both types of pattern lock are poor, patterns without lines provide greater security.
Unsurprisingly, the research confirmed that phones with larger screens were found to provide less security against shoulder surfing attacks.
33. What did the research focus on?
A. What lock-screen patterns people use. B. When shoulder surfing attacks occur.
C. Why people prefer numeric PIN codes. D. How you can unlock your phone safely.
34. What do we learn about shoulder surfing attacks?
A. They can increase our screen time. B. They are a threat to our privacy.
C. They are a kind of physical attack. D. They can be done through remote control.
35. Which of the following proves to be the safest?
A. A six-digit PIN. B. A three-digit PIN.
C. A lock-screen pattern with lines. D. A lock-screen pattern without lines.

It's impossible for anybody to succeed without making mistakes. I can clear remember that last year an English speech contest held in our school. Though my English was the best in our class and all my classmates encouraged me to take part in the contest, but I was so shy a girl that I even dared not answer questions in class. I was afraid of making mistakes in front of so many judge. At last, my classmate Wang Ying, her English was not very good, participated in the contest and won the third prize. Heard the news, I regretted not taking part. As the result, I missed a good chance to show myself.
Now, I have realized the fact which making mistakes is an unavoidable thing in our way to success. Only by making mistakes and correct them can we make progress step by step and finally achieve our goals.
