They didn’t like his stories or drawings.‎ Until one day in college, one of his teachers took note of his talents and suggested that he write children’s books. So he started writing and created a book. But then no one wanted to publish it. He got declined by 20 publishers before one agreed to do it. And from there, he made history! He has now sold over 80 million books like Dog Man and Captain Underpants, and recently helped make a movie!‎ Pilkey never stops. When he started his journey, he didn’t know that it was the beginning of almost 40 years of accidents and near death experiences.‎ During the journey, the train fell into an icy river, killing 12 passengers. Chevalier managed to swim back to the river bank. He only had a broken leg.‎ Two years later, Chevalier was on a plane from Paris to Moscow when a door suddenly opened and he fell out. A few minutes later, the plane crashed(坠毁); 27 people were killed. Chevalier was so lucky that he landed in a haystack(干草堆).‎ A few years later, he was hit by a bus, but again had no serious injuries. Then a year after that, he was driving on a mountain road when he saw a truck coming straight at him. He drove the car off the road, jumped out, landed in a tree—and watched his car fall 100 metres down the mountain.‎ ‎“There are two ways you can look at it,” Chevalier said. “I’m either the world’s unluckiest man, or the world’s luckiest.” When a reporter asked Chevalier what he thought, he chose the “luckiest” one.‎ Two years ago, aged 71, Chevalier bought his first lottery ticket(彩票) in 50 years and won more than 2 million.‎ After this, a TV company in America said they wanted him to make an advertisement. At first he accepted, but then he changed his mind. Chevalier said he wouldn’t fly to Los Angeles for the filming, because he didn’t want to push his luck. Who knows? If he had accepted the invitation, maybe he would have had another accident. But Mr Chevalier is a lucky man. If he’d had another accident, he probably would have survived that too!‎ ‎5. In the train accident many years ago, Chevalier ________.‎ A. didn’t get injured at all B. was lucky enough to be alive C. was finally pulled out of the river D. was the only passenger to survive ‎6. Why did Chevalier refuse to make the advertisement?‎ A. Because he had won 2 million. B. Because he didn’t want to leave home.‎ C. Because he didn’t want to risk losing his life. D. Because he didn’t like the TV company.‎ ‎7. The text mainly talks about ________.‎ A. a man with nine lives B. the unluckiest man in the world C. a man who traveled around the world D. a man who earned 2 million in a lottery C Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food, from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason:price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called "showrooming".‎ Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.‎ Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that"people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying". She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around.‎ But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or free gifts.‎ We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!‎ ‎8. The two questions in Paragraph l are raised to ________ .‎ A. give two examples B. introduce the topic C. compare different opinions D. get answers from readers ‎9. What does showrooming mean in the text?‎ A. Trying in shops and buying online. B. Showing products in a room.‎ C. Buying something in a store. D. Shopping on the Internet.‎ ‎10. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4 ?‎ A.Online shops will disappear. B.Free gifts will surely promote sales.‎ C.Shops need necessary changes. D.Shops will be replaced by online shops.‎ ‎11. The author’s attitude towards showrooming is _________ .‎ A. critical B. neutral C. casual D. supportive ‎ D An Indian movie about two sisters has become a huge hit in China. The Hindi language film, called Dangal, has earned almost $ 170 million in China since its release there on May 5.‎ Much has been written about why Dangal has enjoyed such big success in China. Some people say one reason is that the film’s star and producer, Aamir Khan. He is famous in India’s Bollywood film industry. Two of his earlier films were also big hits in China.‎ Khan’s popularity was clear after he got more than 600,000 followers on the Chinese social media service Sina Weibo within two months of joining. But he is not the only reason that the film strongly connects with audience across China. Media has pointed out how it shows similarities between parental systems in China and India.‎ Dangal is based on the true story of a man who enjoyed the sport of wrestling(摔跤). He competed as a wrestler, but never could achieve his lifelong dream: winning a gold medal. As a father, he wanted his son to win the medal. But his wife only gives birth to daughters. So he finally decides to train them to be world-class wrestlers.‎ The movie is more serious than most Bollywood productions, which tell happy love sorties and include colorful music and dance performances.‎ Edward Chan is a Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He says the strict way of parenting film is something people in China can easily relate to. “1 think the father role dscribed by the movie in India is quite similar to the culture, especially the traditional culture in China. ”‎ The Chinese government-supported Global Times newspaper pointed that movie critics(评论家)in China did not like Dangal. Most of them agree with the fact that the father in the film was forceful in pushing his daughters to become wrestlers. But the film Dangal is really aimed to educate children to work for their dreams.‎ ‎12. What’s the main reason for the father teaching his daughters to wrestle?‎ A. He wanted them to realize his goal. B. He wanted to punish them.‎ C. Few women took this sport. D. He loved them very much.‎ ‎13. What do most Chinese movie critics agree?‎ A.
