Princess quiz time! How did Snow White survive? How did Cinderella (《灰姑娘》) leave her evil stepmother? How did Sleeping Beauty finally wake up?
A kind-hearted person always comes to save the princess, like a prince or a godmother. Princesses cannot protect themselves, though they are very pretty and nice. They always need the help of others.
However, in fact, women can’t put their life in the hands of a prince-like man. They need to work and even fight for their own happiness. The traditional image(形象) of a princess is getting out of date.
Recently, Disney, a company famous for its princess movies, posted the “top 10 rules for being a modern princess”. You will not find any rules related to beauty or looks. The rules focus on loyalty, honesty and other moral values. The rules say princesses need to believe in themselves and try their best to get out of trouble, instead of waiting for a prince’s help.
It’s not the first time Disney princesses have caught up with society’s development. In 1950, when people’s hearts were broken by World War II, Disney created Cinderella. In 1990, Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast (《美女与野兽》) loved reading when education was a man’s
special right in the past. Belle showed the improvement of women’s position in society. Now is Elsa from the film Frozen (《冰雪奇缘》), a symbol of modern princess.
“This is brilliant – ‘The top 10 rules of being a modern princess’ – (it’s) about time,” a group named Confidently Mom said on social media website Twitter. Princesses are still very beautiful, but inner character is the key to being a princess.
21. What does the story think modern women should be like?
A. They should turn to others for help.
B. They should depend on men to do most things.
C. They don’t need to care about their appearances.
D. They should depend on themselves for their own happiness.
22. Disney’s rules for being a modern princess focus on a girl’s _____.
A. looks B. education C. moral values D. position in society
23. The images were created in order to catch up with the society’s development except _____.
A. Godmother B. Cinderella C. Belle D. Elsa
24. What does the group Confidently Mom think of the rules?
A. Meaningless B. Fantastic C. Historic D. Social

In the latter part of the 20th century, child labor remains a serious problem in many parts of the world. Studies carried out in 1979, the International Year of the Children, showed that more than 50 million children below the age of 15 were working in various jobs often under dangerous conditions. Many of these children live in underdeveloped countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Their living conditions are crude and their chances for education small. The poor income they bring in, however, is necessary for the survival of their families. Frequently, these families lack the basic necessities of life—adequate food, decent(得体的、合适的)clothing and shelter, and even water for bathing.
In some countries industrialization has created working conditions for children that are comparable to the worst features of the 19th-century factories and mines. In India, for example, some 20,000 children work 16-hour days in match factories.
Child-labor problems are not, of course, limited to developing nations. They occur wherever poverty exists in Europe and the United States. The most important efforts to eliminate(根除)child-labor abuses throughout the world come from the International Labor Organization (ILO), founded in 1919 and now a special agency of the United Nations. The organization has introduced several child-labor conventions(规定)among its members, including a minimum(最低)age of 16 years for admission to all work, a higher minimum age of specific types of employment, compulsory(强制的)medical examinations, and It depends on voluntary obedience(服从)of member nations.
28. The use of children workers is the most serious ______.
A. in the latter part of the 20th century
B. in the International Year of the Child in 1979
C. in the poorest and backward parts of the world
D. in some areas of Latin America
29. Often children have to work because ______.
A. they can not afford to go to school B. they are forced to work by their parents
C. there is no organization to protect them D. they have to provide for their families
30. According to the UN conventions, ______.
A. employers should provide medical care for children workers
B. children can not be employed
C. children should never be arranged to work at night
D. all countries should give children workers regular physical examinations
31. As far as child labor is concerned, in India, ______.
A. children workers work the longest hours
B. the working conditions for children are really very bad
C. most children workers are employed in match factories
D. there has been great improvement in the working condition since the last century

Many of us adults love taking selfies(自拍照):on vacation, eating out, walking the dog, at work. And for some of us, the selfie has become an easy visual way to keep the running diary of our lives. This may be even more true for our kids.
In today’s world, many kids are not only taking selfies but also are using selfie technology as a way to express what they think and feel. How do they do this? By using their phones to speak the truth of the moment as they see it. And when they “speak”, they record more than their voices. They record themselves in their bedrooms, outside-wherever life has taken them. These words, whether they are actual words or visual expressions, are often very much from the heart. Sometimes they stay on someone’s phone or get deleted for something else. Our thoughts and feelings flow easily out into the world. Who knows where they might end up?
The girl in The Truth, a short film, keeps her diary and speaks out into her video camera or her phone. Maybe one of the most important messages she’s really sharing with the public is how strong the feelings, emotions and concerns are to kids as they move from childhood to adulthood.
Older people forget a lot of anxiety. We forget our early anger toward our parents, our fears about changing schools, or our pains at a best friend no longer being one. But there are lots of kids out there just beginning to experience all of the above and, at times, much more. My hope is that the girl in the film is a beacon(引路人) that helps kids feel stronger and more courageous(勇敢的) as they undertake(承担) all the universal(普遍的) steps of growing up. And I hope she will remind adults and all concerned with our kids, that it does take a village to support and encourage a kid. We all have a role to play. If you are a parent, listen and advise with intelligence(智力) and sensitivity. To all the other players in a child’s life, play by the golden rule: treat any kid who crosses your path with kindness, respect and helpfulness that hopefully you got growing up or that you wanted when you are growing up. (原创)
32. Nowadays, many kids use selfies to ________.
A. express their thoughts and feelings B. keep in touch with parents and friends
C. tell others exactly where they are D. show off their bedrooms
33. What can we learn about the girl in The Truth?
A. She is courageous to speak out her true feelings.
B. She keeps a written diary every day.
C. She talks to her parents about her feelings, emotions and concerns.
D. She is willing to share her ideas with public.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The older we are, the more easily we forget the things.
B. Young people now experience more anxiety than people in the past.
C. We should treat a kid kindly when he is crossing the road.
D. Everyone has to go through the “pains” of growing up.
35. What should parents do when kids experience the pains?
A. Parents should remind them.
B. Parents should listen, encourage and educate them wisely.
C. Parents should ignore the pains kids experience.
D. Parents should undertake all the steps of growing up.
