For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.‎ ‎(A)‎ The State of Marriage Today ‎ Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today? During the past 50 years, the rate of divorce in the United States has exploded: almost 50%of marriages end in divorce now, and the evidence suggests it is going to get worse, if this trend continues. It will lead to the breakup of the family, according to a spokesperson for the National Family Association. Some futurists predict that in 100 years, the average American will marry at least four times and extramarital affairs(婚外恋) will be even more common than they are now. ‎ ‎ But what are the reasons for this, and is the picture really so depressing? The answer to the first question is really quite simple: marriage is no longer the necessity it once was. The practice of marriage has been based for years partly on economic need. Women used to be economically dependent on their husbands as they usually didn’t have jobs outside the home. But with the rising number of women in well-paying jobs, this is no longer the case, so they don’t feel that they need to stay in a failing marriage. ‎ ‎ In answer to the second question, the prospects may not be as pessimistic as they seem. While the rate of divorce has risen, the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen very much, so marriage is still quite popular. In addition to this, many couples now cohabit(同居) and don’t bother to marry. These couples are effectively married, but they do not appear in either the marriage or divorce statistics. In fact, more than 50%of first marriages survive. The statistics are unreliable because there is a higher number of divorces in second and third marriages than in first marriages. ‎ So is marriage really an outdated practice? The fact that most people still get married indicates that it isn’t. And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than single people: they suffer less from stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, and married men generally consider themselves more satisfied than their single counterparts. Perhaps the key is to find out what makes a successful marriage and apply it to all of our relationships!‎ ‎65. What does “this is no longer the case” in paragraph two mean?‎ ‎ A. It is not necessary to get married any more. ‎ ‎ B. Women do not need a husband any longer. ‎ ‎ C. Women are not economically dependent any more. ‎ ‎ D. Many wives do well-paying jobs outside home now. ‎ ‎66. Why may the prospects of marriage not be as depressing as it appears?‎ ‎ A. Many people still like to get married. ‎ ‎ B. The rate of divorce has actually decreased. ‎ ‎ C. many couples would rather cohabit than marry ‎ ‎ D. The statistics of divorce is not quite true。‎ ‎67. How do people usually feel in their marriage life?‎ ‎ A. They are much safer. B. They feel no longer single. ‎ ‎ C. They are more satisfied. D. They suffer a lot less. ‎ ‎68. Which of the following about marriage is NOT mentioned in the passage?‎ ‎ A. There will be more relationships outside marriage. ‎ ‎ B. Many people try to get married again after divorce. ‎ ‎ C. Marriage has long been partly an economic need. ‎ ‎ D. It is a fact that most people choose to get married. ‎ ‎(B)‎ The Hawaiian Islands ‎ ‎ ◆◇◆Hawaii The “Big Island” of Hawaii is a paradise (天堂) playground where visitors can enjoy a popular lifestyle and at the same time, witness the attraction of nature: thousands of square miles form a wonderland, featuring breathtaking beaches, forests, snow–covered mountains and amazing active volcanoes. In states where kindergarten is compulsory, it begins even earlier.‎ Many parents, teachers, and politicians maintain that preschool is the best way to prepare children to learn. There is no real consensus(一致),however, about how this preparation should be achieved.‎ For some, early childhood education relates to the development of the whole child. They think that preschool should encourage exploration and discovery. Group activities teach positive social behaviors such as sharing, kindness, and patience. Time spent alone encourages independence. Learning letters and counting is important only for children who show an interest in them. Advocates(提倡者) of this approach stress that each child is unique and should learn at his or her own pace.‎ Other people refer to research showing that children are ready to absorb basic academic concepts by age 3 or 4. They claim that early introduction to letters and numbers lays the foundation for later academic excellence. Since the 1980s, many people have stressed the value of preschool and point to the success of programs---such as Head Start--- that target low-income children.‎ Is there proof that an academic curriculum in preschool will lead to academic success? Studies have not been conclusive. In the short term, evidence suggests that middle-class children who attend preschool are ahead of their peers in math and language skills, as well as in social skills, when they enter school. However, the same studies show that the gap narrows considerably by the time children reach age 8.‎ Children living in poverty are a different matter. Those enrolled in programs such as Head Start seem to do better than impoverished(贫困的) children who do not attend a preschool. For instance, youngsters in one group enrolled in the program, tracked until the age of 21, earned higher scores on intelligence tests, were more likely to ‎ graduate from high school, and demonstrated more interest in higher education.‎ The idea of public preschool raises many issues. Providing Head Start for all children would be a financial burden on communities that already struggle to fund current school programs. Also, where would a sufficient number of teachers trained in early childhood development be found? ‎ ‎72. The fifth volume of an enormous work re-assessing the Chinese contribution to science and technology is to be published next year. The first volume, which was published twenty years ago, set the tone for the whole work. In it, evidence was given to show that many inventions which, until then, western historians had claimed for Europe, were made first in China. The attempt to rewrite the intellectual history of the world was not received without protest by some respectable historians. However, the evidence that has been presented so far in the first four volumes has persuaded many historians who were doubtful at first. China’s invention ‎ of paper, printing, the magnetic compass and gunpowder has never been quarrelled, but this new history has added advanced bridge design, mechanical clocks, paddle boats and many other inventions to the list.‎ In the four volumes published so far no attempt has been made to explain why China has not kept up with the West in science and technology in modern times. It is probable that the answer is to be found in the social and economic history of China, where an unchanged society under a relatively kind regime(政治制度)of upper classes contrasts with the potentially revolutionary and energetic society of the West at the end of the Middle Ages. In recent years, the Chinese government has been making every effort to catch up with the West again, and there is little doubt that the gap is being reduced year by year. He remembers the night he -was told he won the part of Harry: it was a Friday and he was in the bath. 'My dad came in and said', "Dan, guess who they have chosen to play Harry Potter", I said the name of another actor, because I totally did not think in a million years that they would pick me. "Someone else? " he said. When he said that, I suppose I did have a tiny bit of hope that I might have got it, but I didn't want to count my chickens! And then he said, "Dan, it's you." I actually cried with joy. It was the biggest shock of my life.'‎ Playing Harry Potter is obviously very lucrative. Besides The Chamber of Secrets, Daniel is also being considered for the next five films. This means he could be playing Harry Potter until he's almost twenty. He will earn a large amount of money from the films. Exactly how much is a secret that he and his parents will keep to themselves, but it could be about one million pounds for each movie. That's a lot of money for a 12-year-old. T think I'll save it,' says Daniel matter-of-factly. 'I don't know how much I'm getting, and I don't want to know because I don't think that's important. It's not about the money. It's about having fun and meeting people.' This is perhaps why Daniel has done so well in the acting. Robbie Coltrane, who worked alongside the boy playing Hagrid the giant, says of him, 'Daniel's a very good actor. And I think that's the key to it, because if he decides to pursue it he will do very well. He has a grown-up attitude in a way, and a throw-away attitude at the same time. In fact, it's exactly the same kind of attitude ‎ that gets us all through it.'‎ ‎ ‎ ‎4. He has a correct attitude towards acting.‎ ‎(C)‎ Our sense of smell, which we normally take for granted, is nowadays being increasingly used for purposes which might surprise us if we realized them.‎ One area in which smells are created to achieve particular results is marketing. For some time producers have taken advantage of our sense of smell with regard to household goods.‎ When pleasant smells are passed through a store's air conditioning system, people tend to spend more time in the store and buy more. For example, the smell of chocolate is used in sweet stores, while the smell of leather and perfume are used in clothes stores.‎ In a test, people looked at the same type of shoes in two rooms—one filled with purified air, the other with a smell of mixed flowers. Eighty-four percent of the people preferred the shoes in the room with the smell of flowers. In fact, many said they would have paid up to $10 more for a pair.‎ Smells also have other uses. Research has shown that certain smells can help to calm anxious people and increase their feeling of safety. Smells such as that of flowers and pine forests might therefore be used to relax patients in doctors' and dentists' waiting rooms, and to make the environment more pleasant and less stressful to them.‎ Some companies are experimenting with different smells to produce different effects on their workers according to the time of the day.‎ For example, early in the morning they might put the smell of lemon in the air conditioning system to wake people up. In the middle of the morning, when the atmosphere tends to become more tense, the smell of wood could be used to calm people down. Before lunchtime the smell of melting butter would encourage people to go to lunch on time. After lunch, when people often begin to lose attention, the smell of mint(薄荷) would increase their watchfulness.‎ While some of these uses of smells may be helpful and effective, not everyone would agree with their use to control customers in stores. It has been suggested by consumers' organizations that one way to avoid this new subconscious pressure to buy is to go shopping when people are less likely to be influenced by smells.‎ ‎8. According to the passage, what smell can make people calm and increase their feeling of safety?‎ A. The smell of leather. B. The smell of chocolate.‎ C. The smell of perfume. D. In some states they must stay in school until they are sixteen. Most students are seventeen or eighteen years old when they graduate from secondary school. Another name for secondary school is high school. Most children go to public elementary and secondary schools. The parents of public school pupils do not have to pay directly for their children's education because tax money supports the public schools. If a child attends a private school, then his parents have to pay the school for the child's education. The tuition for the private school is usually quite high, but the quality of the school is normally better than that of the public schools.‎ Today about half of the high school graduates go on to colleges and universities. Some colleges and universities receive tax money from the government. A student at a state university does not have to pay very much if his parents live in that state.
