Engineers have launched a huge garbage collection device to gather plastics floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii. The plastic makes up what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is the world’s largest spread of garbage, twice the size of the state of Texas.
The Organization Ocean Cleanup created the collection device. The group’s founder is Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old inventor from the Netherlands. When Slat was 16, he went diving in Mediterranean Sea and saw more plastic bags than fish. Since then, he has made up his mind to clean up the oceans.
He told the Associated Press that researchers with his organization have found plastic from the 1960s and 1970s among the material in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It contains an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic in total. Most of them float on the surface of the water, or are within a few meters of the surface.
Last Saturday, a ship pulling the pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco for the Garbage Patch. The barrier, called the floater, is 600 meters across. Attached to it is a screen (筛子) that hangs three meters down in the water. The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier. The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices. Slat said this enabled the system to communicate its position at all times.
Shipping containers will hold all the plastic gathered, including bottles and fishing equipment. Slat said the containers were expected to be back on land within a year. Then the plastic will be recycled. And they will also study how the system performs in severe ocean conditions, including huge waves.
24. How did Boyan Slat react to that dive in the Mediterranean Sea?
A. He showed a great interest in diving.
B. He became worried about his safety.
C. He decided to remove the garbage in oceans.
D. He became curious about underwater creatures.
25. What has the organization Ocean Cleanup found about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
A. Most of its plastic is half a century old.
B It covers almost the size of the state of Texas.
C. Altogether there are about 1.8 billion pieces of plastic.
D. The majority of its plastic floats on or near the surface.
26. Why was a screen attached to the ship?
A. To power lights in the ship. B. To protect sea animals near it.
C. To tell the position of the ship. D. To collect plastic along the way.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Approaches to removing garbage in oceans.
B. The problem of garbage in the Pacific Ocean.
C. A huge device made to clean garbage in oceans.
D. A young man who does well in classifying garbage.

They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.
But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.
For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological measures of emotion.
According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.
The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallres of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.
To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow to the reward system in the brain.
“People who got less pleasure from music had lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.
The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will not be active. Thus, it will produce less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine. As a result, people get less pleasure from music.
If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good song isn’t one of them.
28. What do we know about people with musical anhedonia?
A. They usually avoid listening to music.
B. They like to listen to certain types of music.
C. They believe cultural differences are larger than music.
D. They can’t feel the pleasure that music brings to others.
29. What was the purpose of the study?
A. To learn what music people love the most.
B. To learn how music influences people’s emotions.
C. To understand the relationship between music and the body.
D. To see whether music works in the same way for all people.
30. What happened to the participants when they listened to music?
A. All of them had faster heartbeat
B. Those who enjoyed music had slower blood flow.
C. They showed different physical signs as the music changed.
D. Those who enjoyed music had more dopamine produced.and sweated more.
31. Which is the best title of this passage?
A. A new research of listening.
B. Why music isn’t for everyone?
C. What brain produces with music?
D. How people get pleasure from music?
D
Imagine being a business that regularly takes huge quantities of your own products worth millions of pounds and burns them up. Your stock literally goes up in smoke. It sounds crazy, but the practice is common for some of the world's biggest clothing manufacturers. They argue that it is the most cost-effective way of maintaining their brand’s exclusivity(独特性).
The clothes that are burned are those that do not sell at a high enough price. Rather than watch them go on sale, the companies would set fire to them and regain a small amount of energy.
Nobody knows exactly how much unsold stock is burnt annually by those fashion houses, but burning clothes has various negative impacts on the environment. For example, burning clothes
made from artificial fibers may release plastic microfibers into the atmosphere, which worsens global warming. A UK parliamentary committee report on sustainability and the fashion industry advises the government to ban the burning of unsold stock if it can be reused or recycled.
Actually, there are other approaches. What if those companies had a section tasked with taking back unsold clothes, redesigning them into new products, and shipping out the new products to the market once again?
There is also now an opportunity to focus on biodegradable(可生物降解的) fabrics. Clothes that break down faster might not have to be burned. They would also appeal to those who care about the environmental impact of their own wardrobes(衣柜).
Additionally, we have an over-production problem. According to the World Bank, while clothing sales have risen steadily since 2000, clothing utilization has fallen at roughly the same rate. For every extra T-shirt that is sold, it will be worn roughly half as much as it would have been 20 years ago. That means better forecasting market trends would in theory result in less waste.
Burning clothes won't happen simply through fashion firms. The scale of fashion production has to change. And it's important to recognize that these consumer-focused brands will only go where the market takes them. If protecting the environment really matters to the public, they have to make clear that they want more sustainable clothing in the first place. Without consumers demanding that, it won't change.
32. Paragraph Three mainly talks about_________.
A. why fashion firms should end burning unsold stock
B. how artificial fabrics will contribute to global warming
C. how important the UK parliamentary committee report is
D. why fashion firms burn unsold clothes in large numbers every year
33. The underlined expression “clothing utilization” in the sixth paragraph means______
A. how long clothing lasts B. how well clothing sells
C. how often clothing is used D. how clothing is designed
34. According to the article, which of the following is NOT a better way of dealing with unsold clothes than burning them?
A. Redesigning and making them into new clothes.
B. Making consumers feel better about their purchases.
C. Conducting research on market demand before production.
D. Making clothes out of environmentally-friendly materials.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Today's clothes are better than those two decades ago.
B. Consumers play a key role in stopping burning clothes.
C. Burning clothes is a better option for every fashion firm.
D. The secret that some fashion firms burn clothes is well kept.

It’s reported that half of around 7,000 languages on the earth are in danger of disappearing by 2100.There are many reasons for such disappearance. Sometimes younger generations stop learning a language because parents want children to fit in modern society.36. For instance, native American children of the late-19th century were required to attend boarding schools where educators forbade them from speaking their native languages.
Endangered languages are ranked according to their risk level by the United Nations. A "critically endangered" language is one that even grandparents don't speak often. New York's Onondaga language is an example with only 50 speakers left. An "extinct" language has no speakers, which means it is gone forever.37. The last person who spoke it died in 2008. So this language doesn’t exist any longer.
Various animals and plants benefit our environment. 38.Saving these languages benefits our understanding of other cultures. Languages can show how a society looks at the world and what it values. The Endangered Language Alliance, a non-profit group, wants to save languages from disappearing. 39. However, its efforts are limited. If an endangered language is going to make a
real comeback, it'll probably get its start in schools. Now students in Hawaii can keep learning Hawaiian from elementary schools to college and beyond.
40. At least one did. In 1881, a Jewish linguist named Eliezer Ben-Yehuda brought the 3,000-year-old language Hebrew back to life. Today it is one of the official languages of the country of Israel, with more than 4 million speakers.
A.Alaska’s Eyak language is one example.
B.Why should we save endangered languages?
C.With just five speakers left, it is absolutely endangered.
D.Can a language with zero native speakers come back to life?
E. Similarly, different languages contribute to cultural diversity.
F. Sometimes societies force minorities to give up their language.
G. The organization finds native speakers and records their stories.

Dear Jamie,
I am more than glad to know that you are interested in the traditional Chinese literature. It’s never easy to learn Chinese characters and essays. Even native Chinese speakers may find it hard to learn them well, so you don’t have to feel upset. Here are some useful tips.
First, turn to the Internet for help when you have a problem, where you can learn how to read and write the characters. Second, you can learn from Chinese people around and I’m always here to help. But the most
important is to keep on learning and reading. You are sure to make progress!
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
