II.阅读理解(共两节;满分30分)
第一节(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分 )
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
(A)
Every day, Americans throw away 500 million plastic straws, enough to circle the Earth twice, or fill 125 school buses. They are almost never recycled because they’re too small and could be made from several different types of plastic. They simply contribute to the massive problem of plastic pollution; eight million tons of plastic is dumped into the oceans every year.
Plastic straws are now the target of a growing movement to reduce their use. Possibly the first of such campaigns, Be Straw Free was started in 2011 by Milo Cress, who was only nine years old at the time. “I noticed that whenever I ordered a drink at a restaurant, it would usually come with a straw in it, and I don’t usually need a straw,” he said. “This seemed like a huge waste. Straws are made of oil, a precious and finite resource. Is making single-use plastic straws, which will be used for a matter of minutes before being tossed away, really what we want to do with this resource?”
Cress started asking restaurants in Burlington, Vermont, where he lived at the time, to stop providing straws automatically for customers and make them optional
instead. Many agreed and his request made ripples nationwide. The restaurants that make the switch report a reduction in the number of straws they use between 50% and 80%.
The anti-straw sentiment has crossed borders into the UK, where straws have been included in a government plan to ban all plastic waste by 2042. Last year, large pub chain Wetherspoons announced that it would replace plastic straws with paper alternatives across 900 outlets. After the announcement, many smaller chains and pubs across the country followed suit. According to Wetherspoons CEO John Hutson, the move will save 70 million plastic straws a year and the reaction from patrons has been “very positive”.
Offering alternatives or making plastic straws optional, rather than banning them outright, is a common trait among these campaigns. “There are many other viable alternatives to single-use plastic drinking straws that are less harmful to the environment, wildlife and humans,” said Jackie Nunez, founder of The Last Plastic Straw.
21. Why aren’t the plastic straws recycled?
A. It will cause serious pollution.
B. They are too costly to be recycled.
C. They can be dumped into the ocean easily.
D. It is not difficult to find the raw materials to produce them.
22. What efforts does the Wetherspoons make to reduce the use of plastic straws?
A. To ban the use of plastic straws. B. To close some of its outlets.
C. To offer customers alternatives. D. To seek the government’s support.
23. What is the reaction of other smaller chains and pubs after the announcement of Wetherspoons?
A. Uncaring. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Disapproving.
(B)
Digital Etiquette(礼节), or netiquette, is a set of rules for how to behave online. It’s a lot like life etiquette, which is basically having good manners and
treating others with respect. It’s just as important in our digital lives, including how we act in online games or how we communicate in emails, texts, instant messages and on social networking websites. All of these platforms let us talk and share instantly wherever we are.
Unfortunately, some people can lose control the moment they jump online. When they disagree with someone, or have strong feelings about a topic, they end up saying stuff they’d never say in person! They may send ruder emails and IMs or try to start arguments on message boards. That’s called flaming, and it can lead to full-on flame wars, insulting arguments between two or more users. On the Internet, it’s pretty easy to stay anonymous, or unidentified. Having a secret identity to hide behind can make people pretty brave. And when all they see of you is screen name or a funny icon, they might forget that they’re dealing with a real human being!
The principle is simple: Just like in real life, you should treat other people the way you want to be treated. You wouldn’t want somebody to be rude to you, so don’t be rude to anyone else.
Of course, netiquette isn’t just about being nice; it’s also about communicating clearly. That means keeping emails and IMs clear, and to the point. It also means making your messages easy to read and understand, which can depend on your audience. For instance, some abbreviations(缩略词)and emoticons may be fine with friends. But they’re generally not appropriate in formal communication. And whatever you do, don’t write in all capital letters! Writing in all caps makes it seem like you’re yelling.
Lastly, never post anything about your friends on a blog or a social networking site unless you are allowed to. People’s personal information is private, and you can really ruin relationships if you post something that a friend or a friend’s parents don’t want on the web. And keep in mind that the Internet is not a private place; if you wouldn’t want a parent, teacher or future employer to see something you post, don’t post it!
24. According to the passage, the users of social media are advised ________.
A. to cause arguments on message boards
B. to behave online with common etiquette
C. to be respectful of others online rather than offline
D. to apply abbreviations and emoticons as many as possible
25. Why might an anonymous Internet user feel bold enough to say horrible things in response to a blog post?
A. Because he can make more friends if he says mean things.
B. Because he knows his friends will recognize him and think better of him.
C. Because he can insult others without worrying about revenge.
D. Because he can impress older, smarter people with his remarks.
26. Which of the following is the best way to text your uncle to say you’ll be back in an hour?
A. b there in 60, cu 18r! B. BE THERE IN AN HOUR. SEE YOU LATER!
C. I’ll be home in an hour. See you later! D. im running late be there in an hour!
27. Which of the following is a clear rule about posting photos online?
A. If you take a photograph, you can do whatever you like about it.
B. Information about your friends, including photographs, is private.
C. It’s illegal to post pictures online if people in the pictures don’t like it.
D. You should always avoid posting images on the internet.

The British government grants(授予)licenses for people to operate radio and TV stations, but over forty years ago the only radio stations that existed legally in Britain were run by the BBC, the state-owned broadcasting company. However, the government’s power only extended to the country itself and the seas around it up to three miles from the shore. The Irishman who founded Radio Caroline simply put the radio equipment on a boat and anchored it just outside the three-mile limit.
Why would anyone go to so much trouble to start up a radio station? One major reason was the BBC’s policy on the kind of music it broadcast. During a period when pop music was extremely popular, the BBC played very little of it on its radio stations.
As a result, there were large numbers of young people who wanted to listen to a special type of music but couldn’t. Only after Radio Caroline went on the air could young people enjoy pop music broadcast in English all day.
Additionally, there was another reason for Radio Caroline’s popularity. The disc jockey (DJ) didn’t have the typical BBC pronunciation, which, even over forty years ago, was considered by many to be too formal and old-fashioned. Instead, they spoke with regional accents. The audiences loved it and soon many listeners were tuning in to Radio Caroline.
The other pirate(盗版的,非法的)radios began to spring up and soon the authorities were being forced to face the new situation created by the pirate radio stations. These had shown pop music was here to stay, and that young people desperately wanted to listen to radio stations that played it. So the BBC decided to start up its own pop music radio station, Radio 1, and before long Radio Caroline disc jockeys were working there.
In a further development, the British government decided to allow commercial radio stations to operate in the country. This meant that stations could now do legally what Radio Caroline had been doing illegally. Not surprisingly, Radio Caroline found itself in serious financial difficulties. Today, Radio Caroline still exists but it’s no longer as popular as it was over 40 years ago.
28. More than forty years ago, the British government ____________.
A. banned all private radio stations
B. forbade the BBC to broadcast pop music
C. set a limit to the number of private TV stations
D. encouraged people to enjoy pop music
29. The BBC started up Radio 1 when more and more ___________.
A. excellent disc jockeys got employed B. people were attracted by Radio Caroline
C. people refused to listen to BBC D. pirate stations came into being
30. According to the text, Radio Caroline made history by ___________.
A. forcing the BBC to change its policy on pop music
B. making pop music more popular in England
C. encouraging the use of various regional accents
D. raising fund for commercial radio stations in England

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Small talk. Chitchat. These are the short conversations we have at parties, while we wait in line at the store, at family events or work. Sometimes we make small talk with people we already know but not well. 31
Many people find these small conversations about random topics difficult. Some people say they hate it. 32 They may even call it idle chitchat or idle chatter, meaning it doesn’t do anything. They consider small talk not important.
33 These exchanges can open doors that may lead to larger, more meaningful conversations. When you first meet someone or talk to someone you don’t know well, it would be awkward to begin a conversation about a really deep topic such as war, politics or the meaning of life. Small talk also gives you the chance to decide if you want to know that person better – or not. Let’s say you make small talk with someone at a party. 34 You may not want to build a friendship with them unless you really, really love cats.
Chitchat can also increase your feeling of understanding, or empathy, toward people you know but not well. Chatting with a colleague about their child may help you to understand more of their life outside the office. 35
A. However, small talk is important.
B. And small talk may make us happier.
C. But they only want to talk about cats.
D. Others say small talk is a waste of time.
E. This could help build healthy work relationships.
F. However, some people are not good at small talk.
G. Often we have to make small talk with complete strangers.

Text 10
The English primarily drank coffee and wine as their main drinks, and tea was unknown in England till as late as 1662. In 1662 Charles II married Catherine, and it was his new bride who brought a preference for tea with her. She served tea instead of other drinks. Tea soon acquired the position of the royal drink.
However, tea’s acceptance by the British masses was quite slow. It was in the late 1700s that tea began to be popular. One reason which contributed to the popularity of tea was that it was easier to make than coffee. As tea was a high-class drink and it was expensive, the British masses bought second-hand tea leaves. Tea was thus gradually finding a place in British people’s everyday life.
Soon tea began to be sold in London coffee houses. Tea was heavily advertised as a medicinal drink that helped maintain health and beauty. The coffee house owners charged heavily for a cup of tea, as much as 6-10 pounds per cup. The government soon put various taxes, regulations and restrictions on the sales of tea, hoping to earn
a profit from the growing tea trend.

Boys and girls,
I’m greatly honored to deliver the speech. As we all know, with the development of economy and society, the number of private cars is amazingly increasing. Cars and other vehicles let off carbon gases, so do many other human activities, which causes global warming, disasters, and so on. It’s high time that we should go green.
From my point of view, we should raise the public’s awareness of the significance of going green. And taking public transportation or riding bicycle instead of driving should be greatly encouraged. What’s more, it’s a good idea to classify our rubbish and recycle it in our daily life.
That’s all. Thank you.
