A
I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her items
had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled(做标记)everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got untidier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her shouting, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled(爬)under her covers, crying. Clearly, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of pity rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
21. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed?
A. By explaining causes. B. By showing differences.
C. By describing a process. D. By following time order.
22. The author tidied up the room most probably because _______.
A. she was frightened by Kate’s anger. B. she hated herself for being so untidy.
C. she wanted to show her care. D. she was asked by Kate to do so.
23. What might be the best title for the story?
A. My Friend Kate B. Hard Work Pays Off
C. How to Be Organized D. Learning to Be Roommates
B
I talked to one of my friends this morning. To make things easier, let’s call him Peter. Peter is an acting(代理的)manager in our company. He’s going to retire next year. I actually asked him whether he would apply for extension and maybe then he would become the manager. He simply
answered “No, I don’t put off my retirement. I don’t need the “Manager” title to become successful either. In fact, I am already successful by my own definition(定义).”
His simple reply left me speechless. I then continued to ask him what he meant by that. He spent the next 30 minutes telling me how he had managed to send his son and daughter to learn medicine. He told me how hard it was for him to find almost $100,000 to make sure his children got the best education. Now they are very successful and Peter is very proud of what his children have achieved. This is where he thinks he succeeds in his life.
The story is truly encouraging. It tells me that the definition of success is different from one person to another. Some may consider becoming a manager is success. Another will consider bringing up successful children as their success.
Personally, I think Peter’s success is when he found out his personal definition of success. He knows that money and ranks are not success to him. That is why he didn’t ask for extension and fight for that “Manager” title.
What’s your definition of success? Peter did give me one tip to help me answer that question. If you answer “becoming a millionaire” as your definition of success, and you have made it as a millionaire, can you still smile and say “my life is complete”, knowing that today is your last day of your life?
24. The underlined word “extension” in the first paragraph means _______.
A. staying longer at work B. giving up one’s job
C. adding more money D. changing one’s job
25. How did the author feel to hear Peter’s reply?
A. Angry. B. Calm. C. Sad D. Surprised.
26. Peters’ children probably work as_______.
A. teachers B. doctors C. managers D. engineers
C
A few years ago, my sister-in-law started to feel concerned about her teenage daughter. What was she doing after school? Where was she spending her time? My niece was an excellent student, and took part in all kinds of after-class activities. Even so, her mom decided to put a tracking(跟踪) app on the kid’s phone.
At first, this made my sister-in-law “feel better”. Then the good situation suddenly ended. She
recalled, “I found out that she was someplace that she said she wasn’t. I went out in the middle of the night and found her walking without shoes in the middle of the street with some friends.” Things went quickly downhill for the mother and the daughter after that.
With 73% of teens having their own smartphones now, according to a 2015 Pew study, more and more of their parents are facing the question: To spy or not?
Ana Homayoun, founder of Green Ivy Educational Consulting, has advised many parents and their kids about this. “I’ve found teens are more receptive to tracking apps when it is included as part of a family use agreement to improve safety than when it is placed as a secret tool to watch them,” she said.
Mark Bell, a father of a teenage girl, said, “We don’t have tracking apps, but we have set some ground rules that my daughter must follow in exchange for us providing a smartphone,” he said. For example, his daughter must “friend” him on social media accounts so that he can review posts, and must share all passwords.
When you’re trying to build trust, you need to create an environment that encourages it. So, to win their trust, you always need to be straight with your children. “Parents must let children know how and when they’ll be watching them,” said Doctor Pauleh Weigle. If they’re not open about it, he warns, it can “greatly damage the parent and child relationship”.
27. Why did the author’s sister-in-law use the app?
A. She was interested in new apps.
B. She was worried about her daughter.
C. She wanted to know about after-class activities.
D. She wanted to teach her daughter about the app.
28. What can we learn about today’s children from Homayoun?
A. They doubt family use agreements.
B. They are worried about online safety.
C. They welcome the use of tracking apps.
D. They dislike being spied on secretly with tracking apps.
29. According to Paragraph 5, Bell’s daughter _______.
A. kept him out of her online groups B. developed some bad online habits
C. allowed him to know her online behavior D. wanted to put a tracking app on her phone
30. What should be done before using a tracking app according to Weigle?
A. Tell the kid about it. B. Check the kid’s phone.
C. Teach the kid how to use it. D. Advise the kid to use his phone less.

W: I’ve moved to a new office and it’s a little far from where I live. Actually I’m looking for a new
job because the people there are very unfriendly.
M: Oh, me too! I hate my job for I have to work overtime nearly every day.
W: What kind of job are you looking for?

Text 10
I was once a fat girl. I weighed 330 pounds and looked as big as my fridge. I was never worried
about it. But one day I had a medical examination. The doctor told me that I was having heart trouble.
It woke me up. I began to feel nervous. Then I decided to do something!
In a year and five months, I lost about 100 pounds. What a great thing I did! I didn’t have any
expensive food, medical treatment or exercise in any camps. What was the secret to my success?
First I looked through the Internet for do-it-yourself advice that people could follow to lose
weight. Of course I saw countless ads which try to get me to buy their products. But I bought nothing.
The only thing I did was to change my bad habits. So I stopped drinking or eating sweet food. And I
never ate after 6: 30 pm. Besides, I did light exercise for 15 to 20 minutes five days a week.
Then I kept doing what I should do. The most important thing is to stick with it until you lose
weight.
