Just yesterday, June 24, 1996, I was at home watching my elder sister, who is mentally handicapped(精神障碍的). My father was at work while my mother and younger sister were at my mother’s office.‎ I had noticed the clouds growing darker and the ones to the east were turning green. At first I thought nothing of it, but then on the TV, the weather reporter was announcing a big thunderstorm warning, one that usually brings hail(冰雹) and heavy rain. After seeing that, I called my mother and told her about it. She told me I should not be worried because it was just a thunderstorm so we ring off. Then I looked outside and noticed it was almost pitch black at 4: 30 pm. I took a flashlight because I was sure the power was going to go out any second. Then no sooner had I got back from getting the flashlight than the weather reporter announced a Tornado(龙卷风) Warning! I had never been in an actual tornado before, but I had seen some funnel clouds(龙卷云) before in Montana.‎ Suddenly I realized I had no time to lose and I had to try to get my elder sister down the stairs to the basement in a matter of minutes. I surprisingly got her down there with no trouble at all and I raced back up the stairs to get the phone. When I got back downstairs my dad called and told me to get downstairs immediately. I told him I was already down there! He said OK and we talked for a few seconds and then we hung up. Then through the basement windows, the only thing I could see was when lightning struck.‎ I do not recall hearing of any deaths, or too many injuries, so I guess everyone got a good head start to run to their basements. Either they or we are all lucky.‎ 2. What was Ben’s first reaction when he noticed the clouds growing darker?‎ A. He watched TV to make sure if it would rain later.‎ B. He knew there was going to be a strong storm.‎ C. He made a call to his mother at once.‎ D. He didn’t pay much attention to it.‎ 3. Why would Ben take a flashlight?‎ A. It was almost pitch black at that time.‎ B. He prepared it in case of power off.‎ C. He wanted to look for something.‎ D. He needed to take good care of his elder sister in the room.‎ 1. What can we infer from the underlined sentence?‎ A. Ben was very scared. B. The flashlight was broken.‎ C. It was at midnight. D. It was completely dark outside.‎ 2. According to the passage, which of the following is true?‎ A. Ben’s mother was worried about the coming of storm.‎ B. Ben had ever experienced tornado before.‎ C. Ben saved himself and his elder sister by hiding in the basement.‎ D. The strong storm caused many injuries.‎ C Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones ( 音 调 ) required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can meet similar challenges.‎ Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch (音高).‎ One of the study’s authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music is good for our sensory system ( 感 官 系 统 ). This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.‎ Mandarin(普通话) speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A singlesyllable (单音节) word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.‎ For this study, the researchers looked at 20 nonChinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.‎ As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings:squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities on the Chinese sounds.‎ The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.‎ 1. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find . A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same time B. he has an easier time learning music at the same time C. it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch D. it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand 2. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training? A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.‎ B. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.‎ C. Because music training might help people with language study.‎ D. Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.‎ 3. The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “ ”. A.pronounced B.spelled C.seemed D.created 4. What would be the best title for this passage?‎ A. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers B. Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs D How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush can show how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.‎ The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It can show how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.‎ The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a daytoday basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.‎ The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun.” Several says.‎ Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes,” but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.‎ The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from 99 to199, developing on ‎ features.‎ The US is the first target market.‎ Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.‎ 1. Which is NOT the feature (特征) of the Kolibree toothbrush?‎ A. It can send the users’ information to the phones.‎ B. It can help users find their phones.‎ C. It can teach users how to brush their teeth right.‎ D. It can ensure that the users spend enough time brushing.‎ 2. What can we learn from Serval’s words in Paragraph 3?‎ A. You need to see your dentist on a daytoday basis.‎ B. You will find it happy to see a dentist.‎ C. You can brush with the Kolibree as if you were lead by a dentist.‎ D. You’d like a dentist to watch you brush your teeth every day.‎ 3. What can we infer about Serval’s children?‎ A. Walk around, even if only in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few words in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers.‎ Help protect the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments are so old and easy to break that are sensitive(易受影响的) to the touch of hands or bags and shoes. 39 This way, you don’t encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites.‎ And here’s the big one—good manners are nearly universal. 40 If that doesn’t sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home.‎ A.
