My childhood left three months ago on a plane to Austria.

When a fire happened in East Africa’s biggest second-hand clothes market in Nairobi, Kenya last week, the manager William Ruto, went there at once to tell traders that the government would do everything to help them to rebuild their business.
But perhaps Ruto should have answered a more important question: whether Gikomba market will be in business a year from now if a ban on the importation of second-hand clothes into east Africa comes into force.
In January, east African head of states suggested that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania should stop importing used clothes to help the local textile industry.
Kenya alone imports around 100,000 tonnes of second-hand clothes a year ---many of which were sent to shops in the west. An Oxfam-owned second-hand clothes shop in Senegal sees, for example, a Forever 21 dress once worn by a young woman in London find its way into the room of a university student In Kenya. But if the ban goes through, Kenyans will be forced to buy locally produced clothes, giving textile producers a chance to re-enter the market they lost to cheap imports from abroad.
The collapse of Kenya’s textile industry dates back to the early 1980s, when it opened up the local market to second-hand clothes. The clothes soon caught the eye of the young population, leading to the collapse of many of Kenya s textile factories.
According to local media reports, there were 500,000 people working in the textile industry in the 1980s. Today, that number has fallen by more than 96% to around 20,000.
Banning the importation of used clothes is the government’s latest effort to save an industry and to recreate some of those lost jobs. But, a ban could hurt another group of Kenyans who depend on the second-hand clothes trade to make a living.

People have speculated(思索)for centuries about a future without work. Some imagine that
the coming work-free world will be defined (定义) by inequality: A few wealthy people will own all the capital, and the masses will struggle in a wasteland. A different prediction holds that
without jobs to give their lives meaning, future people will simply become lazy and depressed.
But it doesn’t necessarily follow from findings like these that a world without
work would be filled with dissatisfaction. Such visions are based on the downsides of being unemployed in a society built on the concept of employment. In the absence of work, a society designed with other ends in mind could provide strikingly different circumstances for the future of labor and leisure.
These days, spare time is relatively rare for most workers. “When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel tired,” says John Danaher, a lecturer at the National University of Ireland, adding, “In a world in which I don’t have to work, I might feel rather different”—perhaps different enough to throw himself into a hobby with the enthusiasm usually reserved for professional matters.
Daniel Everett, an anthropologist(人类学家)at Bentley University studied a group of hunter-gathers in the Amazon called the Piraha for years. According to Everett, while some might consider hunting and gathering work, hunter-gatherers don’t. “They think of it as fun,” he says. “They don’t have a concept of work the way we do.”
Everett described a typical day for the Piraha: A man might get up, spend a few hours fishing, have a barbecue, and play until the evening.

If you were to look at the pictures of my early years, you would be left with the impression that I was a happy child. You couldn't miss the extra large set of buck teeth (龅牙).
One of the many nicknames my father gave me was Bucky Beaver. To Dad, and to me, Bucky Beaver was an expression of love straight from the heart. Unfortunately, my younger brother, John didn't work under the same rules. “Hey, Bucky Beaver!” John would say as he rocketed past my friends and me on his bike. Occasionally, when we were old enough to walk to the corner ice cream store, where all the cool kids hung out, I would wait for my order at the walk-up window. Then I'd hear, “Order for Bucky Beaver!” and see my brother running off. My appetite gone, I would return home, defeated.
It seems that I could do nothing to change his taunts (嘲弄的言语). He used to call me Smelly Kelley. To avoid any truth behind that name, all I had to do was routinely bathe. However, the teeth, although I brushed them every day, still stuck out.
Even my mom, who was supposed to be my advocate, crossed the line. When she sent our school pictures to my grandparents in Seattle, Mom would call first. “I sent the kids' school pictures to you today,” Mom would say in an apologetic tone. “Yes.” she continued. “Kelley? Uh huh...well,”-- with a nervous laugh—“we’re hoping she’ll grow into them.” She wasn't talking about my feet.
When I was eight years old, three-quarters of my front left tooth was knocked out
and ended up in the dirt while I was playing on the school playground. I didn't feel shocked by the fact that I had lost part of my tooth. To me, it was just one more in a line of many that had already fallen out, or were on their way. Losing a tooth up to that point had been a cause for celebration, but I got an entirely new reaction when I opened the door to my house after school that day. “Hi, Mom!” I yelled, smiling extra wide to show off my new look. “Oh, my God!” Mom said. She was shocked and pale-faced, staring down at me.
The next thing I remember is that I was lying in a chair at the dentists. The good dentist announced there was no way to save the tooth because what could have been saved was still lying somewhere in the dirt on the school playground. Regardless, a crown(齿冠) was the way to go. A shiny silver half-crown covered what remained of my left center buck tooth. Things didn’t improve when it graduated to a full-sized crown. It didn’t change the fact that my teeth still stuck out.

the summer before the sixth grade. That’s when my parents finally acknowledged my “condition” was not going to improve on its own. That’s when the idea of braces (牙箍) was first introduced.
Finally, the big day arrived. Once again found myself lying in a chair knew it would be worth it to finally be able to avoid my brother’s taunting. Once I got home, I inspected Dr. Ellis’
work closely.

A technical secondary school in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu province, planned to order Korean-style school uniforms for students, but parents opposed the move, believing that the new uniforms looked too good and would encourage early romances

“The plan to change the current school uniform from sports wear has been cancelled,” an employee of the school told the Jinling Evening Paper.
“The students dislike the present uniform, so the school took advice from the students last November, knowing that most of students prefer Korean-or Japanese-style school uniforms. We know cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou have changed their sports wear school uniforms to more fashionable uniforms,” an employee surnamed Lin said.
“However, we had to stop the plan because many parents are strongly against it. Some parents think it’s just a way for the school to make money, and others think the new uniforms will take students’ attention away from their studies,” Lin said.
When asked about the possibility of problems with early romance between students because of the more fashionable uniforms, Lin said he hadn’t considered it. He, however, agreed that the Korean-style uniform makes the students more charming.

With the development of science and technology, mobile payment is gaining popularity in China. Recently our class has held a discussion about it and opinions are divided.
60% of the students are in favor of mobile payment. Firstly, it is easy to operate. They just need to take a smart phone instead of cash or bank cards. Meanwhile, it’s
widely accepted in different places, ranging from big shopping malls to stallholders. It is really convenient to consumers. In addition, they could enjoy some discounts with online payment.
However, about 40% of the students are concerned about its security. It is likely that personal information could be let out and money stolen. Besides, they tend to buy more than what they really need by paying online. Also it’s difficult for some old people to adapt to it.
From my perspective, I am happy to embrace the new trend. Undoubtedly, paying online will contribute to our easier life and it will definitely improve our living standards.

W: I’m Alexandra Grace, Educator at New Zealand Embassy Beijing. Today I will give you a brief introduction of New Zealand’s higher education. Small as it may be, New Zealand offers quality higher education opportunities, with two thirds of its higher education institutes within the top 10 of QS World University Rankings 2014.What makes New Zealand’s universities stand out is their abilities to provide high-end education.
Though Chinese students form the largest international student group in New Zealand, the country only ranks the 7th on Chinese students’ most desirable overseas destination list. The size of the country prevents it becoming a hot study destination. But it draws students with its safe and multi-cultural environment.
While it attracts mainly wealthy students, higher education in New Zealand is also affordable for many common Chinese families. Chinese students can get a British-based education with the school fee being some of the lowest in the world. On average, the school fee was about 25,000 dollars per year, and the living costs were about 20,000 dollars a year. Besides, students can do some part-time jobs. The money earned in those jobs is enough for them to travel around the country and enjoy its breath-taking scenery.
