On November 24, 1868, Scott Joplin was born in Texas. He became famous as a ragtime (拉
格泰姆音乐) composer and piano player. Ragtime music was an early form of jazz. This music has a
lively beat and was developed from the music of African Americans.
Ragtime became popular in the early 1890s, and the music was played on the piano. The piano
player usually made up a melody, and then changed it a little bit every time he played. Scott Joplin
was very good at composing, or making up music and playing the piano. When he was growing up,
Joplin’s home was filled with music. Still, Joplin’s father did not want him to be a musician. When
he was about 14 years old, Joplin left home to travel and start a life of his own. He traveled all over
the Midwest playing the piano and composing music. Sometimes he played with music groups.
Other times he sang by himself in noisy saloons and bars. In 1899, Joplin wrote Maple Leaf Rag, a

years, Joplin completed a ragtime opera which he called Treemonisha. This opera was about a young
black woman who became a leader of her people. She tried to help her people gain their freedom and
their rights.
1916, Joplin became very sick. He had a disease that made him forget things and become easily
afraid of things. In 1917, he was put in the hospital. He finally died there on April 1, 1917. Scott

In the shadow of Kenya’s Mount Kilimanjaro, nine Rothschild giraffes, the rarest giraffes on
the planet, are free to wander at the English-style manor (庄园). Every day shortly before 9am, they
come up to the house and stick their heads through the windows and doors in search of morning
treats. The manor’s owners, Tanya and Mikey Carr-Hartley, share their dining table with them. And
now the couple are sharing the fantastic experience with the public by opening the manor gates to
guests at the giraffe hotel, the only hotel of its kind in the world. Now, guests can feed the giraffes at
breakfast but can also get up close to them from their second-floor bedrooms.
Mr and Mrs Carr-Hartley, both 38, spent their childhood living close to the house in Nairobi
and have always been enthusiastic about the animals. Tanya said, “Mikey and I grew up near this
manor house when we were children. We are both third generation Kenyans and have always wanted
to work in conservation. Mikey’s family have been related to the protection of animals for many
generations. His granddad helped the removal of giraffes as far back as the 1930s because the
Rothschild giraffes lost much of their natural living space. When the house came up for sale, we
jumped at the chance to buy it as we had always dreamed of owning it. Now, we were absolutely
overjoyed to do something for the giraffe protection. Having the giraffes so close is very special and
something which people can now experience by staying in one of the ten rooms at the hotel.”
A conservation project to save them was started at the manor in 1974 by the previous owners.
“The previous owners ran a very successful breeding (繁殖) programme, where many giraffes were
set free into the wild and we hope to continue,” said Tanya.

29. What can we know about Mikey’s family?
A. It has had a long connection with giraffes.
B. It used to raise giraffes around the manor.
C. It built a new manor for the wild giraffes.
D. It removed giraffes to Mount Kilimanjaro.
30. Which can best describe the manor’s previous owners’ conservation project?
A. Visitor-friendly.
B. Energy-saving.
C. Costly.
D. Fruitful.
31. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Giraffes’ breakfast by guests
B. Meanings for giraffe protection
C. The world’s only giraffe hotel
D. History of the giraffe manor

The rebuilt Notre Dame(巴黎圣母院) could feature a futuristic glass design, solar power, and
an urban farm that supports vulnerable and homeless Parisians, if one architecture firm's vision is
realized.
In April, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced an international competition for
architects to redesign the cathedral's 19th century spire(尖顶), which fell down after a fire destroyed
the 850-year-old Gothic landmark. Paris firm Vincent Callebaut Architectures (VCA) responded to
the call with an eco-friendly design that supports the local population and produces more energy
than it uses.
The Vincent Callebaut(VC) project is titled "Palingenesis", a Greek concept of rebirth or
recreation. The firm proposes a new roof made of glass, oak and carbon fiber, which connects "in
one single curved stroke of pencil" to the sloping spire. The rooster which topped the original spire,
regained from the remains after the fire, will resume its watch from the new glass design, while the
cathedral's choir will be "bathed in natural light".
Beneath the spire, the roof will host a fruit and vegetable farm run by charities and volunteers,
in order to produce free food for vulnerable local people. "Up to 21 tons of fruits and vegetables
could be harvested and directly redistributed for free each year," the firm said in a press release. "To
that end, a farmers' market would be held every week on the forecourt of Notre Dame." The roof and
spire will also produce electricity, heat and ventilation (air circulation) for the cathedral: an "organic
active layer" within the glass will provide solar power, while the roof's diamond-shaped "scales" will
open to offer natural ventilation -a design inspired by termite mounds(白蚁丘). The spire will act as
a space in which hot air accumulates in winter.
"How can we write the contemporary history of our country, but also that of science, art and
spirituality together?" the firm said in a press release. "We seek to present a supreme project, a
symbol of a lively and ecological future.” If the Vincent Callebaut design is selected, the firm said,
the reborn Notre Dame will define "the new face of the Church in the 21st century", presenting "a
fairer symbiotic relationship between humans and nature".
32. What can be learned about the design of Notre Dame by VCA?
A. It focuses on the theme of "green".
B. It gets the most local support than the others.
C. It can recover Notre Dame's original appearance.
D. It is from the most famous architect around the world.
33. What does the underlined part "resume its watch" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. be decorated with a watch.
B. show people the right time again.
C. be removed and placed somewhere else.
D. overlook Notre Dame again at its original place.
34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The inspiration of the design.
B. The function of the roof and the spire.
C. A detailed introduction of the VCA project.
D. The symbol of Notre Dame for the local people.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The future of the new Notre Dame looks black.
B. The proposal for the Notre Dame has been approved.
C. The VCA is confident about winning the competition.
D. The new design will be a mix of history, science and art.

M: You can check the weather, shop for things and schedule things on your calendar. You can do it
all with just your voice!
W: Wow, it can do almost everything!
M: It can also control a smart house.
W: Hmm, my house isn’t very smart! I won’t use it right now.

M: Hi, Lucy. You look upset.
W: I am! I got a speeding ticket this morning!
M: Oh no! What happened?
W: I was driving to work. And I was driving a little too fast.
M: How fast?
W: I was going 45 mph on Center Street.
M: The speed limit on Center Street is 35 mph.
W: I know. So a police officer gave me a speeding ticket.
M: How much is the ticket?
W: The speeding ticket is $100. But the police gave me another ticket for not wearing my seat belt,
so I have to pay $50 for it.
M: That’s too bad!
W: Well, I broke the law. I should pay for my carelessness.
M: That’s it. Everybody is equal before the law. But do be careful next time.

There are many kinds of tea. The tea plant has leaves that are green all year round. The leaves
are picked and treated to make different flavors of teas. The tea leaves have different flavors because
of how they are processed.
When tea plants are ready, farmers and workers pick the right leaves from the plants. Then the
leaves are put out to dry for several hours. When the leaves are about 60 to 70 percent dry, they are
rolled. This gets rid of any extra water. Then the leaves are laid out in a warm room. The oxygen in
the air makes the leaves change color. To make tea with a light taste, like green tea, the leaves are
laid out for a short time. For stronger, darker tea, the leaves are laid out for a longer time. When the
leaves are the right color, they are sorted and packed for sale.
