China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---sivler, green, red, blue, yellow,
whatever you want.
It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly. To be safe,I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere occasionally .I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
4.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
B.Because they are traditional and safe .
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.
5.The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended _____ .
A.to ride it for fun B.to use it for transport
C.to improve his riding skills D.to experience local culture
6.How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A.It was difficult. B.It was boring.
C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful.
7.Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author took great pleasure in biking
C.The author was praised by the other bikers.
D.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.

For many,it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. 故选A。
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture...
故选A。
The United Nations Environment Programme is calling for urgent action to reduce growing risks from chemicals.Better management of chemicals could save millions of lives and billions of dollars. As estimated,143,000 chemicals are now produced.Yet the report says only a small number of these chemicals have been studied for their effects on human health and the environment. It says death and disability rates are high from the unsafe use of chemical products.
Sylvie Lemmet, director of the United Nations Environment Programme, says poor
management of chemicals has a high economic cost. For example, she says the cost is higher than the amount of overseas development aid, or ODA, for health care in sub-Saharan Africa.
She says, “If you look at the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide in sub-Saharan Africa, only the injury and the loss of working time is estimated to be 6.3 billion US dollars in 2009.This is higher than the total ODA that is going to the health sector in the same area.”
The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that chemical sales worldwide will increase by around three percent a year until 2050.Chemical production is moving quickly from developed to developing countries.By 2020, chemical production is expected to increase by 40 percent in Africa and the Middle East and 33 percent in Latin America. One of its biggest concerns is pollution of rivers and lakes by pesticide and fertilizer.Other major concerns are heavy metal pollution from the production of cement and textiles, and dioxin pollution from mining.
The UN report urges the chemical industry and governments to work together to develop safety policies. It says preventing harm costs less than fixing it.
8.The purpose of Paragraph 3 is mainly to indicate that ____.
A.chemicals have a high production cost
B.Africa needs more development aid
C.the use of pesticide causes a great loss
D.the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide is inaccurate
9.Which of the following is NOT a source of danger according to the text?
A.Pesticide. B.Fertilizer. C.Heavy metals. D.Minerals.
10.According to the text, what is the main reason for the risks from chemicals?
A.The mass production of cement and textiles.
B.Lack of research funds on chemicals.
C.Poor management of chemicals.
D.Contradictions between chemical producers and governments.
11.What would be the best title for the text?
A.The truth is Sylvie Lemmet's comments
B.A UN warning about chemical dangers
C.The unpredictable future of chemical industry
D.Preventing is much better than fixing

Sylvie Lemmet, director of the United Nations Environment Programme, says poor management of chemicals has a high economic cost.
In its early history, Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went something like this: A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street. Asked if he needs help, he replies, "No, thanks. I've got a good horse under me."
The city planner decided to build an underground drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.
An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet.
This of course created a new problem: dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago. Building owners were faced with a choice: either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into main floors, or hoist the entire buildings
to meet the new street level. Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building?
That's where George Pullman came in. He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel, Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operateeach section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly. Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stay open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step was to clean the polluted river.
12.The author mentions the joke to show ______.
A.horses were fairly useful in Chicago
B.the Chicago people were particularly humorous
C.Chicago was very dangerous in the spring
D.Chicago's streets were extremely muddy
13.The underlined word "hoist" in Paragraph 4 means "__________ ".
A.lift B.change C.repair D.decorate
14.What can we conclude about the moving operation of the Tremont Hotel?
A.It involved Pullman turning ten jackscrews.
B.It interrupted the business of the hotel.
C.It went on smoothly as intended.
D.It separated the building from its foundation.
15.The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's______.
A.engineering problems and their solutions
B.environmental disasters and their causes
C.popular life styles and their influences
D.successful businessmen and their achievements

In early history,Chicago had floors frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck.
Small wood-frame building could be lifted fairly easily. 故选A。
At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.(在Pullman的指导下,每个人同时抬起他们手中的千斤顶,因此建筑就被慢慢地、平整地抬起来了)可知C项正确,故选C。
