When I was three years old, I couldn't speak. It was a strange reality that none of the doctors I visited could understand.
One day, I was shadowing (尾随) my mother. She found herself looking in a mirror, and through it our eyes met. She began to speak to me through the reflection, and I slowly began to mimic (模仿) her mouth's movements until I formed a word.
It turned out that I'm deaf in my left ear, and have a slight problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I've never lived in a state of selfhating sorrow. Imagine being able to shut out all sound as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That's my reality when I sleep on my “good ear”, and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.
People call my deaf side my “bad ear”, but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't. In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.
Owning a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however. On the first day I got my aid, when I was eight, I took it to school for show and tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, “Aren't those for old men?” At that moment, I felt different. It took a long time for me to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.
But it's not just schoolkids who can make us deaf and hardofhearing people feel like burdens. Every video on social media that lacks subtitles (字幕), for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it. Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.
And with hearing aids costing around $ 2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted. As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations — I'm lucky. I'm deaf, but I can still hear everything. I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human. And when it comes to sleeping, I'm even superhuman.
In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.
4.How does the author view his hearing difficulty?
A.It's a disaster and causes him a lot of trouble.
B.It gave him a chance to experience something special.
C.It made him feel embarrassed in front of his classmates.
D.It helped him to live in his own world without being interrupted.
根据对第三段的整体理解,尤其是最后一句“That's my reality when I sleep on my ‘good ear’, and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes”可推知,听力障碍让作者有了与众不同的体验,与最后一段倒数第二句“I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human”呼应,故选B。
5.What can be inferred from the passage about the author?
A.He was born deaf.
B.He is optimistic and helpful.
C.His family and classmates have supported him a lot.
D.The hearing aid brings much convenience to his daily life.
根据第四段第一句“People call my deaf side my ‘bad ear’,but when I wear my hearing aid,I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't”和对本段的整体理解可推知,助听器给作者的生活带来了诸多便利,故选D。
6.What is the author's attitude toward his life?
A.Grateful. B.Anxious.
C.Excited. D.Disappointed.
根据最后一段第二句“As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations — I'm lucky”和第四句“I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human”
7.What is the author's main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To give advice on life to disabled people.

Robby Pepper can answer questions in Italian, English and German. He is Italy's first robot caretaker. He is employed at a hotel on the popular Lake Garda to help answer simple, usual questions from visitors. During one of Robby's first days, Mihail Slanina, a guest from Moldova, congratulated the robot on his skills. “He's like a real person; he's really good,” she said. “He talked; he shook my hand.”
Japan's Softbank Robotics created Robby. The Italian company Jampaa programed the robot. It can provide hotel guests with information they need, like where to find a restaurant and its hours of operation. The use of robots is growing in service industries like tourism. Most of the robots serve mainly as novelties. But they are expected to become more useful as better artificial intelligence, or AI, is developed.
The International Federation of Robotics says about 79,000 professional service robots were sold last year. The Frankfurt, Germanybased organization expects up to 25 percent sales growth each year through 2020. These artificial intelligence machines include defense robots, cleaning robots, and medical robots. In 2016, 7,200 public relations robots like Robby Pepper were sold — a 135 percent increase from 2015 sales.
Richard Windsor is a technology businessman in London. He says the use of robots is not yet common because artificial intelligence is not complex enough. He says the proof is that the companies responsible for the two best AI systems, Google Assist and Baidu's DuerOS, do not make robots.
Public acceptance is important to the robot industry. Experts say people in the United States and Japan seem more welcoming to robots than people do in Europe. Shoppers at a store in Scotland got one robot, Softbank's Fabio Pepper, dismissed. Customers were not willing to talk to the robot. And a security robot at an office complex in Washington, DC made news last year when it rolled itself into a fountain and would not get out.
He says the proof is that the companies responsible for the two best AI systems, Google Assist and Baidu's DuerOS, do not make robots.(第四段最后一句)
分析:says后为宾语从句;that引导表语从句;responsible for the two best AI systems作定语,修饰the companies。
8.Why does the author mention Robby Pepper in Paragraph 1?
A.To advertise Italy's first robot caretaker.
B.To tell us it can complete many tasks.
C.To tell us a welldeveloped robot.
D.To introduce the topic and attract the readers.

A.Robby can find restaurants.
B.Robby are programed in Italy.
C.Robots are becoming more useful.
D.Robots are only useful in service industries.
由第二段第三句“It can provide hotel guests with information they need, like where to find a restaurant and its hours of operation.”

B.The producer gets great profits.
C.The robot industry has a promising future.
D.Every country is increasing its robot industry.

B.Robots can serve in every industry.
C.Google Assist and Baidu's DuerOS make the best robots.
D.There is still a long way to go for the popularity of robots.

A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes.
Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco startup company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's cofounder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced nocarbon rubber.
Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year,
the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future. ” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.
For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.
When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.

of Rothy's shoes?
A.The design and color.

15.What is the purpose of the text?

Have you ever considered how important transportation is to the world? __16__ We would have to get or make our own food, our own clothes, even our books, and newspapers. Everything that we have come to depend on is brought to us. Even the water that we drink is transported through pipelines from wells to our homes and offices. We have come to depend on the availability of three principal kinds of transportation: land, sea and air.

Nearly every major city in the world provides some form of public transportation. __18__ The most common form is the bus. Buses have been in use in major cities since approximately 1900. They provide transportation service on countless routes from the city
center to the suburbs.
Subways are mostly found in large cities. The subway is an underground system of high speed trains, which move more quickly and efficiently than buses. And they will deliver you to within walking distance of almost any place in the city. __19__
Cabs are more expensive than buses or subways, but they will deliver you to the exact location you want in the shortest time possible. __20__ And as an added attraction, many cab drivers will tell you stories about their adventures or even the details of their life stories.

③what改为which。
⑦删除to。 in addition to是介词短语,表示“除……以外”;in addition表示“此外,另外”,在句子中单独作状语,一般用逗号隔开,在文中起着连接上下文的作用,故删除to。
⑧active前加an。 take an active part in表示“积极参加”,故active前加an。
⑨before改为after。
⑩them改为it。
