Texting while walking is something that most of us are guilty of. We can’t help replying to that message we just received. However, while it’s fun to keep up with the latest gossip, we may actually be putting ourselves in danger.
A team of researchers from two UK universities recently found that people who use their phones while on the move walk differently than usual.
“Recently, a person in front of me was walking very slowly and weaving (迂回行进), and I thought, ‘Is this person drunk?’” Matthew Timmis, co-author of the study, told the Guardian.
It turned out that the person was just texting. Inspired by this, Timmis and his team set out to discover the effects of phone use on how we navigate streets.
A group of 21 volunteers were asked to walk around a simulated (模拟的) street, complete with obstacles such as a step. The participants traveled the course a total of 12 times each, either writing or reading a message, making a call, or with no phone at all.
It took the volunteers 118 percent longer to complete the course when using a phone. They also focused on the step obstacle 60 percent more and paid attention to the travel path 51 percent more
when they weren’t using a phone.
Although there were no accidents, Timmis believes we should still be aware of what’s going on around us.
“The big risk here is suddenly-appearing hazards (危险), like a pedestrian (行人) suddenly walking in front of you,” he told the Guardian. “You are not going to be able to respond to that as efficiently, which increases the risk of injury.”
To bring attention to the dangers of “text walking”, a temporary “texting lane” was set up in Antwerp, Belgium in 2015. And earlier this year, a special crosswalk featuring flashing red lights on the ground to get the attention of texters was set up in Wuhan, Hubei province.
“Texting while walking can lead to collisions with poles or other pedestrians. You could even be endangering your own life when you cross the street without looking up,” a spokesperson for the company that made the Antwerp texting lane told Yahoo News.
24.What did the UK researchers recently discover about text walking?
A. It’s a common problem all around the world. B. People walk in a different way when texting.
C. People are risking their lives text walking. D. It has caused more traffic accidents.
25.How much longer did it take for people to complete the course when using a phone in Timmis’ experiment?
A. 12 percent longer. B. 118 percent longer. C. 60 percent longer. D. 51 percent longer.
26.What was the purpose of setting up the “texting lane” in Belgium?
A. To provide a safe lane for text walking. B. To attract more people to walk in the lane.
C. To give an example of a modern lane. D. To warn of the dangers of text walking.
27.The underlined word “navigate” in paragraph 5 can be replaced by________.
A. go up B. go away C. go across D. go by

A day in the life of 18-year-old David Lanster is full of typical teenage stuff: school, baseball practice, homework. And then he starts cooking.
“Some nights I’m up until I am making pies, or even later if we’re braising (蒸) beef,” said the
student at Ransom Everglades High School in Florida, US.
For the past year, Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster’s parents’ home. Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by them.
Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them, until the pair decided to do something nice for charity (慈善).
“We got some really great Miami Heat tickets, a nice watch, and many kitchen gadgets (小物件),” Lanster said. “But we wanted to make this something positive for people other than us.”
Lanster and Moran focused on Common Threads, a charity that aims to teach kids in poor communities (社区) to cook and make healthy eating choices.
The young cooks ask their guests to give however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster’s parents cover their food costs. After their last 12-person event, Lanster and Moran gave $1,600 (10,600 yuan) to the charity.
Now, they’re taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road. Lanster and Moran have started to organize private dinner parties with a similar model: the host pays for the ingredients, and the guests make a donation to a charity of their choice.
Without formal (正规的) training, Lanster said he had been interested in cooking since he helped his mom in the kitchen when he was very young. He learned how to cook by reading cookbooks and watching TV programs.
Outside the kitchen, the two are busy preparing their college applications. Neither is sure what they will do in the future, but they’ve promised their parents that they’ll leave professional cooking alone until they finish school.
28. How is Lanster’s life different from other teenagers’ lives?
A. He stays up late to finish homework. B. He plays baseball every day after school.
C. He goes to a cooking school in his spare time. D. He holds dinner parties to collect money for charity.
29.After each dinner party, Lanster and Moran ______.
A. receive thank-you cards from the guests B. cover the food costs with the money they have collected
C. ask their guests to donate money to charity D. visit the poor children at Common
Threads
30.Which of the following about Lanster and Moran is TRUE?
A. They received formal cooking training before starting their dinner parties.
B. They hate going to school and trying to do something different.
C. They’ve made up their minds to become professional chefs.
D. Their way of giving to charity is different from others.
31. Which of the following words best describe Lanster and Moran?
A. Creative and helpful. B. Humorous and optimistic.
C. Outgoing and patient. D. Confident and cautious.
D
AlphaGo is a computer program that plays the board game Go.
In March, 2016, the pride of humankind was crushed (粉碎) by a computer. Google’s AlphaGo defeated the South Korean Go grandmaster (围棋大师) Lee Sedol four games to one, as the world looked on with shock and awe (敬畏). Artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) had suddenly reached a new and unexpected height.
But as smart as AlphaGo is, it’s no longer the best Go “player” in the world. Google’s artificial intelligence group, DeepMind, has created the next generation of its Go-playing program, called AlphaGo Zero. The new AI program is unique in the way it learned to play Go. Instead of learning from thousands of human matches, as its predecessor (前任) did, AlphaGo Zero mastered Go in just two days without any human knowledge of the game and defeated AlphaGo by day three, reported The Guardian. It then went on to defeat AlphaGo 100 games to zero.
To learn how to play Go, AlphaGo Zero played millions of matches against itself using only the basic rules of the game to rapidly create its own knowledge of it. Like the previous version, it used “reinforcement (增强) learning to become its own teacher,” according to DeepMind’s website.
“It’s more powerful than previous approaches,” David Silver, AlphaGo’s lead researcher, told The Guardian, “because by not using human data, or human expertise in any fashion, we’ve removed the constraints (约束) of human knowledge and it is able to create knowledge itself.”
AlphaGo Zero’s approach to self-learning is a significant advancement in AI that could be applied to help solve some of the world’s biggest problems, according to a recent research report published in the journal Nature. For example, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis argues that
AlphaGo Zero could probably find cures for a number of serious diseases within weeks, according to The Telegraph. Indeed, the AI is now being used to study protein folding, which is connected to diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
So now that AI has exceeded (超过) the bounds of human knowledge, perhaps the question is not about what AI can learn from humans, but what humans can learn from AI. We can only wait and see.
32.What can we learn from the first three paragraphs?
A. AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol five games to zero.
B. AlphaGo Zero defeated AlphaGo within one day.
C. AlphaGo Zero is the first program to defeat a human at Go.
D. AlphaGo Zero has become the new best Go player.
33. How is AlphaGo Zero different from previous Go-playing programs?
A. It can collect human knowledge automatically. B. It can create knowledge without human limits.
C. It can become its own teacher in learning Go skills. D. It can play many matches without a break.
34.What’s the possible application of AI in the future according to the article?
A. Treating diseases. B. Making new Go rules.
C. Solving math problems. D. Creating new proteins.
35.What is the author’s attitude towards AI?
A. Mixed. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Worried.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Ways To Manage Stress Creatively
Stress is a huge problem for us all. Here’s what I’ve learned and apply to manage stress using my creativity.
1. 36__
Putting my creativity and my work first, I often neglected to eat, exercise, even stand up from my
desk. I spent the whole year in non-stop pain – constant doctors which only caused me to feel depressed, sad and useless. I now realize that how I feel physically (and mentally) is more important than the work I create. Taking care of myself includes all natural remedies(疗法) such as acupuncture(针灸), herbs and vitamins as my only form of medicine. I’m learning how to say no to social pressures, in favor of my own well being.
2. Don’t worry about what other people think of you.
This is easier said than done, but I promise it does come with age. 37 A lot of people do offer unsolicited (自发的) advice. It is human nature to want to help other people. But if that advice is coming from a place of control or judgment, RUN in the opposite direction.
3. Don’t Compare.
___38 _Most people are not as happy as they describe themselves to be. The best advice I ever heard was this… Don’t compare your inside to other people’s outside. Be open to new experiences, be kind to yourself and accepting of the journey which is life. Being present means not thinking into the future, or harping on the past. The coolest thing about being present is that CREATIVITY LIVES IN THE MOMENT. 39
4. Your intentions matter.
__40____ What was your intention? I remind myself to enjoy the process of my creative fun stuff, it’s for me. If others like it, great, but it’s the enjoyment of my creative intention, in the moment, that I treasure.
A. Stop judging.
B. Each moment is UNIQUE.
C. We have to work in order to live.
D. Take care of yourself---Mind AND Body.
E. Stress is often caused by comparison to others.
F. It’s important to remember why you started doing something.
G. No one cares about what you’re doing unless what you’re doing affects them.

I took the Harvard Summer School program in my vacation. During my stay there, I spend a lot of time studying in the mainly library Widener. I enjoyed myself in the ocean of knowledges, either doing research for my papers or read special edition books. The library, which it is named after its donor Harry Widener, stands right next to the Emerson building of philosophy. Opening a pair of heavy yet elegant metal doors, I was immediate bathed in warm light. I wandered around the library, fascinated to find one treasure after other.
The library is a amazing place. One can fully experience the academic atmosphere only he visits the library. For me, the library as well as the courses explain Harvard’s place as the home of devoted scholars.

Athens, one of the most important cities in the ancient world, is now the capital of modern Greece. The old city was inland, several miles from the sea.
