A wireless transmitter(传话器) passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day’s efforts.‎ The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. “We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says. “And I wanted to deal with that with my design.”‎ Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.‎ Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals exactly one minute of TV time.‎ Existing pedometers(计步器) normally clip(夹在) onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. “It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,” she says. “That was one of my main design considerations.”‎ ‎4.According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to ________.‎ A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer B. deal with overweight among teenagers C. enable children to resist the temptation of TV D. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs ‎5.Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?‎ A. They regulate a child’s evening TV viewing time.‎ B. They determine a child’s daily pocket money.‎ C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.‎ D. They contain information of the receiver.‎ ‎6.What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion?‎ A. The exact number of steps to be taken.‎ B. The accurate number of hours spent on TV.‎ C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.‎ D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.‎ ‎7.Compared with other similar products, the new design ________.‎ A. sends teenagers’ health data to the receiver B. counts the wearer’s steps through shaking.‎ C. records the sudden movement of the wearer D. makes it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat I went online to check if my pay was in my bank account. To my amazement, I discovered that not only had I been paid, a company I’d never worked for had also paid me! I knew I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account, so I tried to get the money back to the right person. It is easier said than done.‎ The bank couldn’t help as it wasn’t a bank problem. The human-resource department as the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details. I rang the bank again. Thankfully I had sympathetic call operator who gave me a name, so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for.‎ I expected the bank would contact me to arrange to take the money from my account and repay Daniel. I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourselves.‎ We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me. Due to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his. I never had any intention of keeping Daniel’s pay, but red tape(繁琐手续)made it difficult to do the right thing. It all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company couldn’t do — admit a mistake has occurred and fix it.‎ ‎8.The underlined phrase “beside myself” in paragraph I probably means ______.‎ A. very fortunate B. very angry C. really thankful D. at ease ‎9.What was the attitude of the author towards the extra money in his bank account?‎ A. He didn’t know what to do with it.‎ B. He felt lucky to get it.‎ C. He thought of keeping it for himself.‎ D. He wanted to return it to the right place.‎ ‎10.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A. Daniel had been repaid when he called the author.‎ B. The author was to blame as he didn’t have enough details.‎ C. Neither the bank nor the company admitted their fault.‎ D. Daniel had the same name as the author’s.‎ ‎11.How was the problem solved in the end?‎ A. The author and Daniel solved the problem themselves.‎ B. It cost Daniel a lovely bottle of wine to get back his money.‎ C. The author gave the money back to the company.‎ D. The call operator offered to solve their problem.‎ There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only necessary, but also essential to have a good sense of humor just to help us go through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my heart.‎ How would you feel if you could not joke around with wife, husband, child, co-worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found humor in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine. This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to others that are around you.‎ I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say. Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they would sit there without the slightest smile on their faces. They don’t get the joke that makes others laugh. I am, laughing hard while they just sit there, looking at me as if I were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?‎ Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor, we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness and bring a little light into our lives.‎ Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and have some fun laughing together.‎ ‎12.According to the passage, humor is necessary and essential because ______.‎ A. it can pick up people’s spirit B. it can help people get on well with others C. it can help get rid of the cruelty in the world D. it makes people more confident ‎13.The author answers the questioning the second paragraph with _______.‎ A. facts and descriptions B. evidence and argument C. examples and conclusion D. stories and persuasion ‎14.In writing the passage, the author mainly intends to ________.‎ A. talk about his own understanding of humor B. encourage people to be humorous in daily life C. introduce a practical way to get through daily life D. convince people of the power of being optimistic about life ‎15.What is the author’s attitude towards the present world?‎ A. Indifferent B. Positive C. Satisfied D. Critical Why you shouldn’t punish your kids for lying Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences (TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common. Children see parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessen fears. 16.‎ The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishment. 17. Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead.‎ PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically. Be specific: 18. and give your child a hug or a high five. Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day. If you happen to “catch” your child in a lie, say something like, “That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home.”‎ MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day. It need not be dramatic. Another option is to play a game at ‎ dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day. Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if she plays along.‎ DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.19. Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out). More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.‎ ‎20. Usually they can be dropped by then. It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, k can be dramatically lessened.‎ A. It is not what that is, but about practice.‎ B. As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.‎ C. That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.‎ D. “That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked. Wow!”‎ E. Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.‎ F. “You did a good job, but what you said was not what I’d like to know!”‎ G. Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem.‎ 三、完形填空 Learning a second language fuels children’s intelligence and makes their job prospects brighter. _____21___the fact is, in U.S.A, as in many other English speaking countries, speakers of two or more languages are in the ___22___ . 如:‎ ‎…both of them have similar ideas… Otherwise, it is impossible for him to help each other and to make their friendship last long. 如:‎ Before her leaving, I prepared a gift to show my best wishes to him. She said… 如:‎ Li Ming’s parents invited I to spend two wonderful weeks in Qingdao with them… 如:‎ He had a deep voice, which set himself apart from others… (从句主语which是指the voice, 这种声音使“他”与别人分离, 故改himself为him)[2013课标I]‎ ‎52.Dear Tom,‎ Glad to receive your letter. And I'm writing to tell you something about Chinese high school students’ physical exercise. With the increasing pressure from the national college entrance exam, more and more students have to sacrifice the time for sports to prepare for the exam, which is so important for their future development. They only have one PE class a week, obviously not enough. Actually, most of the students are eager to take part in sports, but they are so occupied with their study.‎ In my view, although it is important for them to have a better performance in the exam, health is equally important. Without a strong body, we would achieve nothing in our life. I hope all students can reorganize their timetable and try to build up their body.‎ Yours,‎ LiHua ‎【解析】‎ ‎【分析】‎ 本文是一篇开放类书面表达,要求考生假设自己是李华,你的美国朋友Tom近日写信给你,想了解你校高三学生的体育锻炼情况,请回信介绍相关情况,分析原因并说明自己的感想。 ‎ 第3步:根据提示及关键词组进行遣词造句,关键词为physical exercise、the increasing pressure、sacrifice the time for sports to prepare for the exam、be eager to take part in sports、be occupied with、achieve nothing、build up their body等。 使用了较多的高级词汇,如sacrifice 、be occupied with、achieve nothing、build up their body等;尽量运用了丰富的句式,如非限制性定语从句…which is so important for their future development;形式主语句…it is important for them to have a better performance in the exam. ‎
