But when athletes hit their heads, the hit can cause concussions (脑震荡). ‎ Concussions have long been a concern for professional athletes, but they’ve become more common among young players too. Between 2001 and 2009, the number of kids under 19 visiting doctors for concussions each year increased by 62 percent. Engineers are developing new helmets (头盔), and new rules are limiting physical contact in some sports. But are these efforts enough to protect kidsˈ brains?‎ Concussions can happen during many types of activities. But sports like football and soccer are especially risky. When you run or jump, your body is moving at an increased speed. A sudden hit causes you to move faster in a different direction.“It's like when you're in a bus and it makes a sudden stop,” says Dr. Kevin Crutchfield, an expert at a sports concussion center in Baltimore‎, ‎Maryland.“You hit the inside of the bus.”This hit damages the brain. It affects the way the brain functions (运转). So some sports require athletes to wear helmets. Helmets help reduce the force of a hit. The hard outer shell spreads the force over a larger area. Inside a helmet, a plastic or ‎ air-filled lining also helps soften the blow.‎ Steve Rowson is an engineer at Virginia Tech. In his lab, he tests how helmets hold up against different types of hits. No helmet can prevent concussions completely, says Rowson. But he’s found that when wearing a newer football helmet, the player’s head doesn't gain speed as much after a hit. That lowers the risk of concussions.‎ Many youth sports teams have set limits on physical contact to reduce the risk of concussions. In soccer, most concussions happen as a result of headers — shots or passes made with the head. That's why many people think kids shouldn't head the ball until high school.‎ These efforts should help, says Crutchfield. But the best way to prevent long-term brain injuries, he says, is to stop playing immediately if you suffer concussion.“Protect yourself today so you can play again tomorrow.”‎ ‎24. Dr. Crutchfield suggests that after receiving a concussion, young players should __ ___.‎ A. never head the ball ‎ B. avoid dangerous sports ‎ C. play other kinds of sports ‎ D. stop playing the sport for a while ‎ C Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She had more than 20 books published. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.‎ ‎ Her poems described conditions among the poor, racial inequality and drug use in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience.‎ ‎ In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago. The South Side of Chicago is where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was “A Street in Bronzeville” that gained the attention of literary experts in l945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions about the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.‎ In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the prize for her second book of poems called" Annie Allen". "Annie Allen" is a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms.Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life.‎ ‎ Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called "Maud Martha". "Maud Martha" received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.‎ In some of her poems, Gwendolyn Brooks described how what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, "Corners on the Curving Sky".‎ ‎ By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brooks' poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.‎ ‎28. What does the text mainly talk about? ‎ A. The life of Gwendolyn Brooks. ‎ B. The struggle of black women. ‎ C. A concern that is often heard with regard to single child is whether one child necessarily means a lonely child. Many single-child parents feel a stigma associated with their decision to have only one child, because there are no other children in the family for the child to associate with, and this may lead to the child feeling lonely at times, especially during vacations.‎ Another common argument against having just one child is that an only child may be more spoiled than one with siblings. Many people believe that a single child will not have learned to negotiate with others, and respect the give-and-take involved in many relationships. Some think this may leave the child less capable of interacting well with people of his or her own age than one who has been raised with siblings.‎ Despite these arguments, the number of parents choosing to have only one child is increasing in many parts of the world. For some single-child parents, particularly those with busy careers, the pressures of devoting time and energy to a second child can seem too overwhelming, resulting in them electing to have no more children. For other parents, the financial burden of having a second child may be the prime consideration.‎ Advocates of single-child families argue that there are advantages for the child as well as the parents. With just one child, they suggest, there is no potential for family arguments arising from favoritism or sibling jealousy. Moreover, with only one child, the parents can give, and the child can receive, more quality time and attention. This often leads to increased self-esteem which, combined with increased independence, can lead to the child being more confident.‎ Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this issue. The circumstances affecting each set of parents are unique. Thus, the best solution is to make a decision that both you and your mate feel confident about.‎ ‎32. Supporters of having only one child state that________ ‎ A. a single child may be more spoiled than one with siblings. ‎ B. a single child may grow lonely without siblings. ‎ C. a single child may be less capable of getting well along with people. ‎ D. a single child can have increased independence and confidence. ‎ ‎33.Which word in the following would best replace the underlined word in Paragraph One? ‎ A. guilt B. helplessness C. relief D. responsibility ‎ ‎34. What does the author imply about a big family with more siblings? ‎ A. Children perhaps have potential arguments arising from favoritism or sibling jealousy. ‎ B. Child can’t have enough chances to learn to negotiate with others. ‎ C. Children can’t learn to respect the give-and-take involved in many relationships. ‎ D. Children may have fewer chances to interact with people. ‎ ‎35.Which of the following best states the author’s purpose of writing? ‎ A. To point out the disadvantages of having only one child. ‎ B. To display the advantages of having only one child. ‎ C. To raise a controversial problem with its probable causes and effects. ‎ ‎ D. To list some reasons for having an only child. ‎ 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Research shows that playful teasing between parents and their children can be a way to strengthen relationships, bring up difficult topics, and just have fun. 36 Carol Bishop says, "you need to recognize if they are enjoying it." There are also rules about what is okay and not okay to tease your child about. 37 Instead, tease kids about safe topics, like a messy room, or things that can be easily changed.‎ Teasing should also be a two-way street. 38 If they go too far making fun of you, be sure not to blow up. Instead, help them to learn boundaries and what may hurt others.‎ Teasing about a disappointing grade should only be used as a gentle reminder to study or do homework. It shouldn't be focused on the ability because that could make the situation worse. It's not wrong to say to your child, "I'm disappointed that you got a C." 39 you need to examine if there is a learning disability or maybe they are depressed or being bullied.‎ ‎ From monsters under the bed to darkness and loud noises, fears that may seem silly to an adult may be very real to a child. ‎40 In fact, it could make them worse. Teasing a child who is frightened about something is not a way for them to expand their horizon—you need to make them feel secure.‎ A. Kids often feel hurt when teased by others.‎ B. Topics like appearance and weight are prohibited.‎ C. You have to be willing to let your child tease you about things.‎ D. But then you must work with them to figure out the cause.‎ E. But parents need to recognize when teasing becomes hurtful.‎ F. Laughing or teasing won't help them overcome their fears.‎ G. Teasing a child about sports performance can cause a child to quit the sport.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节 满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从36至55各个题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ What are you most afraid of?A few years ago,I thought of the scariest thing I could do,and then I made myself do it!
