American society has grown to love reality TV shows. The style of these shows suggests that the plots we watch are the realities of the world. However,do the shows even have a bit of reality in them?
In a study done by Psychology Today, a survey of 239 people was conducted to determine the reasons for watching reality TV shows. Though it was assumed (假设)at the beginning of the study that the main reason for watching the shows was to stay in the social circle and be able to chat in the office the next day, the reasons for watching turned out to be much different.
A common reason given by the audience of the shows was the idea of fame. The idea of the lifestyle of a higher class was appealing to most of those who were surveyed. Seeing people with fame on television plants the idea that they too are able to gain a higher status in society.
The problem at hand is that television is showing us what reality is supposed to be, while at the same time making the reality of the TV shows unreal.
So many girls in today's society are dressing like the girls on these shows. They watch these shows and want to look like the people on the shows. This leads to monotony in society, and the idea of the unique individual disappears.
The way young Americans act today is also changing. Children and teens are watching reality TV shows and wanting to act more like adults. They are using what used to be considered adult words and doing things associated with adulthood, like drinking, at a very early age.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "To be yourself in a world that is often trying to make you something else is the greatest achievement." Be who you want to be, and don't let what happens on the screen make you someone you are not.
23. According to the study, people like reality TV shows mainly because they ______ .
A. admire the lifestyle of famous people
B. want to stay in their own social circle
C. like to chat about them with their families
D. enjoy the realities of the world on the screen
24. According to the author, reality TV shows, influence on teens is ______ .
A. misleading B. positive C. slight D. avoidable
25. What does the underlined word "monotony" in Paragraph 5mean? ______
A. Lack of similarity. B. Lack of changes.
C. Social anxiety. D. Social equality.
26. What would be the best title for the passage? ______
A. Why not Watch Reality TV Shows? B. Why is the Ways We Dress Changing?
C. Do You Love Reality TV Shows? D. Are Reality TV Shows Realities?

From a lack of air and drinking water to solar radiation, theoretical Mars pioneers face any number of potential obstacles to settling on the red planet. Now, scientists have found something else to add to the list:seriously messed-up biological clocks.
One day on Mars - which scientists refer to as the solar day, or "sol"- is 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. A team of European scientists recently demonstrated why that could be a problem.
Circadian rhythms(生理节奏) are the body's natural cycles of rest and waking, which tend to follow roughly 24-hour light-dark cycles. These natural rhythms - which play a role in biological functions including brain wave activity and hormone(荷尔蒙) production - can be interrupted by things like jet lag(时差)and night shift work.
For the study, the researchers compared mice with healthy, 24-hour circadian clocks to mice with a genetic change that caused them to have shorter, 20-hour circadian clocks. The mice with healthy biological clocks were more likely to survive and reproduce, while the mice with shorter biological clocks were more likely to die off.
What does this all have to do with space travel?Since the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth, people with shorter circadian clocks could suffer from health problems as they try to adapt to the rotational(转动) speed of the red planet.
Unfortunately, the body is unlikely to adapt to the new conditions or "learn" to develop a longer clock. As Loudon explained, "Learning is not a likely option."
In other words:Sorry, super-early risers - NASA might not want you for the next Mars mission.
23. From the passage, people can face the following troubles living on Mars EXCEPT ______ .
A. absence of air B. a lot of fierce creatures
C. lack of drinking water D. messed-up biological clocks
24. According to scientists, how long does one day on Mars last? ______
A. 24 hours. B. 23 hours and 23 minutes.
C. 24 hours and 37 minutes. D. 12 hours and 37 minutes.
25. How did the researchers study what effect living on Mars has on sleep? ______
A. By comparing different mice. B. By analyzing computer data.
C. By experiments in spaceships. D. By observing and judging.
26. Life on Mars would seriously mess with your sleep because ______ .
A. the brain wave activity will be interrupted
B. the body's natural cycles can be shortened
C. hormone production will hurt biological functions
D. the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth
D
Over millions of years, African penguins have developed a keen sense of where to find food. Once they're old enough, they set off from the shores on which they were hatched(孵化)for the first time and swim long distances in search of tasty fish like anchovies and sardines. But they don't search directly for the fish themselves. When African penguins head out to sea, they look for areas with low surface temperatures and
high chlorophyll(叶绿素). Because those conditions signal the presence of algae(藻类). And lots of algae means lots of plankton(浮游动物), which in turn means lots of their favorite fish. Well, that's what it used to mean.
Climate change plus over fishing have made the penguin feeding grounds a mirage(海市蜃楼).The habitat is indeed plankton-rich, but now it's fish-poor. Researchers call this an "ecological trap." "It's a situation where you have a signal that previously pointed an animal towards good-quality habitat. That habitat has been changed, usually by human pressures. The signal stays, but the quality in the environment gets worse."
Richard Sherley, a zoologist at the University of Exeter and his team used satellite imaging to track the African penguins from eight sites along southern Africa. Historically, the birds benefited from tons of fish off the coasts of Angola, Namibia and western South Africa, but now they're going hungry.
"I was really hoping we'd see them going east, and finding areas which the fish had moved to but it ends up being quite a sad story for the penguins." said Richard. The researchers calculate that by falling into this ecological trap, African penguin populations on South Africa's Western Cape have declined by around 80 percent.
Some research groups are exploring the idea of moving them to a place where they can't get trapped, like the Eastern Cape. But Sherley thinks that a solution in the long run means making and carrying out rules to create more sustainable(可持续的)fishing industry, which needs public support.
23. How do penguins find their food? ______
A. They discover fish with their keen sense.
B. They swim long distances directly for fish.
C. They make signals to each other when finding fish.
D. They look for warmer and greener areas.
24. What is an ecological trap for the African penguins? ______
A. A trap set to catch penguins. B. A good fish habitat with few fish.
C. A habitat rich in plankton. D. A mirage on the sea.
25. What can be done to help the penguins in the long run? ______
A. Move the penguins to other places. B. Create nature reserves for penguins.
C. Keep a balanced fishing industry. D. Increase the population of penguins.
26. What is the main idea of the passage? ______
A. African penguins are losing their habitats.
B. African penguins are falling into ecological traps.
C. A sustainable development is needed.
D. African penguin populations have declined.

Dear Tom,
How are you? Glad to tell you something about mobile payment in China.
Mobile payment is the most popular in China. It has made people's daily life more and more convenient. Most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes.
By mobile payment, we can pay easily wherever we go. You can buy breakfast on the street and pay by scanning with your smart phone. In the subway station, you scan with your smart phone to purchase your ticket. This is a glimpse into the life of most Chinese — allowing us to bid farewell to the wallet and bank cards. Mobile payment has greatly changed people's lives in China. It seems that China is really leading in some ways and is also sweeping other nations.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
LiHua
