Five successful women delivered speeches on the topic “Bouncing Back after Setbacks.” As I sat there listening to their many personal and professional mistakes and setbacks, I felt fortunate that I hadn’t made that many mistakes in my own life.‎ Those women had lost thousands in investments, started companies but failed, sold companies that later ended up being worth millions, and lost partners in the name of business. Despite knowing that they had, in fact, bounced back and were again doing very well, I was starting to feel sorry for them.‎ Then, as if someone whispered in my ear, I heard the words: “Don’t be so proud of yourself. You haven’t made any mistakes because you haven’t lived at all. Look how boring your life is.” Whose voice was this, and how dare it speak to me like that?‎ I think, for the first time, I heard my own heart speak. It shook me to my core, and it took all I had to keep from crying. I started thinking of the mistakes I had made. The voice was right. There weren’t many at all. I had followed a straight path for 38 years. I went to school, earned bachelor’s and master s degrees with honors, and stayed at every job I’d had far longer than it was professionally beneficial for me to do so. In fact, at 38, I had only had three jobs. “The devil (魔鬼) you know is better than the one you don’t” was my motto.‎ A quick review of my life made me realize that it was the actions I hadn’t taken that I was suddenly regretting. I hadn’t studied abroad. I hadn’t risked love. In fact, I was perpetually single. I hadn’t started a business. I hadn’t traveled enough. I had said “no” far more than “yes”.‎ The voice that whispered to me continued to the New Year. It was like it laughed at me. The thought of turning forty frightened me. It’s one thing to be unhappy and unsettled in your twenties, and perhaps even in one’s thirties. But was I going to start a new decade with the same boredom? I needed something to pick me up, some activity I could look forward to.‎ ‎24. How did the author feel when first hearing stories from the 5 speakers?‎ ‎ A. Regretful. B. Surprised. C. Lucky. D. Guilty.‎ ‎25. Why did the author feel like crying during the conference?‎ ‎ A. Because she realized she hadn’t lived her life to the fullest.‎ ‎ B. Because she realized she was deeply touched by the women.‎ ‎ C. Because she realized she had nothing to be proud of in her life.‎ ‎ D. Because she realized she had made a lot of mistakes in her life.‎ ‎26. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 probably mean?‎ ‎ A. The familiar devil is more frightening. B. Saying “no” is better than saying “yes”.‎ ‎ C. It’s better to stay within the comfort zone. D. You’d better change your job more frequently.‎ ‎27. What can we learn about the author from the passage?‎ ‎ A. She felt afraid of ageing. B. She traveled abroad a lot.‎ ‎ C. She was married in her thirties. D. She decided to do something .new C Dinner and a movie was a two-part affair. But increasingly, the two have been combined into a single experience, allowing moviegoers to get fries and a beer while they watch the latest superhero blockbuster. Full-service theaters have become a Friday-night pastime for Americans.‎ Dine-in cinemas are not altogether new. In the late 1980s, brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin opened one in Portland. A decade later, inspired by the Mcmenamins, Tim and Karrie league began pairing trendy beer with hits like The Craft at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin. But in recent years, the trend has expanded from niche (小众) to mainstream. There are now 29 Alamo locations nationwide, from Omaha to EI Paso.‎ Full-service theaters appeal to a broader, more regionally diverse customer base. At Movie Tavern in Roswell, for instance, you can order popcorn shrimp while watching Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. AMC, the biggest U.S. movie-theater company, launched DINE-IN, where meals can be ordered with the push of a button.‎ For the most upscale experience, you’ll have to fly to Paris, where EuropaCorp First Class,‎ ‎ owned by the Fifth Element director Luc Besson, serves luxurious champagne and caviar (鱼子酱).‎ The rise in full-service movie going goes with declining ticket sales across the industry more broadly. North American movie attendance in 2018 dropped to what appears to be a 27-year low. The downward tendency is the continuation of a 15-year trend. Between lots of uninspired remakes hitting theaters, younger audiences choosing to consume content on their smart phones and the dramatic rise in the popularity of streaming (流媒体),it’ s no wonder that theater owners are socking creative ways to attract customers off their couches. It’s working: despite a 2% decline in movie attendance over four years. AMC DINE-IN achieved 4% growth in just two.‎ Full-service theaters are not without complaints. Despite servers’ attempts at stealth(悄悄的行动),many find them distracting when serving food. And as expensive as traditional theater concessions have become, prices tend to get dearer once pancetta(意大利熏肉) enters the mix.‎ But for those with the funds, the full-service theater offers reason enough to quit online movies.‎ ‎28. The passage is intended to______.‎ ‎ A. argue if online movies are beneficial ‎ B. introduce a popular patterns of recreation ‎ C. call on people to quit expensive online movies ‎ D. blame the decreasing movie attendance on streaming D From 1990 to 2000,fishermen seeking swordfish off the coast of California accidentally caught and killed over 100 sea turtles, and injured many more. In 2001,the federal government established the Pacific Leatherback Conservation Area(PLCA),a region off the coast of California where fishing boats aren’t allowed to enter from August through November. Since then, the number of turtles killed by mistake has fallen rapidly, but a handful of animals still die from being caught in fishing nets each year. And meanwhile, the once$15 million swordfish industry has become a $2 million industry.‎ Scientists are hoping to find a way to both protect sea turtles and other endangered creatures help fishermen make a living. For this, many are looking at dynamic(动态的) ocean management to help fishing boats meet fish where they are and avoid catching other fish by mistake.‎ The first paper to suggest that the fish that live in the open ocean should be guarded with fluid,ever-changing zones of protection, came out in 2000. Larry Crowder,a professor at Hopkins Marine Station, remembers reading it and thinking, “Cool idea, but it will never work.” In 2000,scientists didn’t have the computer power to cheaply test statistical models or deal with satellite data quickly. ‎ They didn’t have enough data dealing with fish or satellite data on ocean conditions, either.‎ Now scientists can download oceans of satellite data in minutes, and attach satellite archival tags(档案标签) to marine(海洋的) animals to track their movements. They first collect data by marking the creatures, collecting reports from fishing boats,or other tracking methods. Then they compare that data with weather conditions, the time of year, and any other data that can be sensed. Finally, they can forecast where fish are likely to be.‎ Crowder and his colleagues used the data to develop a tool called EcoCast, which shows fishermen a daily map where there are more fish they desire. According to statistical modeling,if fishers had used EcoCast during the 2012 and 2015 fishing seasons, they could have fished in at least 125,000 more square miles than were open to them, without significant risk of hurting turtles.‎ ‎32. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?‎ ‎ A. An effective way to collect data.‎ ‎ B. Some fruits in the related technology.‎ ‎ C. A scientific method to find specific species.‎ ‎ D. The way dynamic ocean management works.‎ ‎35. What should be the advantage of using EcoCast?‎ ‎ A. It protects the marine environment from pollution.‎ ‎ B. It reduces the risk of national economical loss.‎ ‎ C. It prevents fishermen from getting lost while fishing,‎ ‎ D. It both protects ocean animals and supports fishery.‎ 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Everyone is aware that taking good care of our bodies can prevent many medical problems from occurring later. This behavior 62 (call) “bedtime procrastination (拖延症)” is common in our daily life..‎ In a study, 53 percent of the 2,400 63 (participate) said they didn’t follow their sleep schedule, delaying it at least twice 64 week. It is found that they delayed bedtime not because they liked to stay up late, but they couldn’t stop 65 (do) other unimportant things, which were keeping them up in the first place.‎ ‎“People who generally have trouble resisting temptations and sticking to their intentions are more likely to delay going to bed.” Floor Kroese, a psychologist 66 (far) explained to HufPost.‎ Yet, according to scientists, lack of self-control is not the only thing 67 (blame). Our body clock also plays an important role when 68 comes to bed time. To check the influence of the body clock 69 sleep, scientists studied the sleep patterns of 108 people. Maybe you prefer watching TV at home.‎ Text 3‎ M: I took my last exam for this semester this morning.‎ W: Now that your final exams have finished, what are you going to do?‎ M: I plan to take it easy for a few days.‎ Text 4‎ W: Good morning, Mr. White M: Good morning. How could you say no?‎ M: Well, believe it or not, I don’t have a burning desire to see the world. I’d much prefer just to stay at home. Anyway, it’s hard to decide.‎ W: “Well, I would strongly advise you to think of the future. Working abroad is much more exciting than working in a small town. You’re lucky to have a choice. A lot of people don’t.‎ Text 7‎ M: Do you know Kevin Durant? He was infected with COVID-19 last week!‎ W: Yes, he is now a player for the Brooklyn Nets. I feel sorry for him.‎ M: Why have so many athletes been exposed to COVID-19 recently? Shouldn’t their immunity be stronger than ours?‎ W: Studies have shown that prolonged acute exercise (长时间的剧烈运动) can weaken the body’s immunity. In addition, athletes have to travel to many places to participate in the competition, so their human immunity will be weakened. The daily training and competition field are also relatively complex and crowded, and the probability of being infected with the COVID-19 will increase.‎ M: You really know a lot. Now I just hope Durant will get better soon.‎ W: You don’t have to worry too much. Athletes are more likely to heal themselves than the general population.‎ M: OK. Being friends with someone as rational as you isn’t all bad.‎ Text 8‎ W: Hi, George, what have you been doing lately? I haven’t seen you around much. Where have you been?‎ M: Oh, I was playing the piano for a group of Germans. I just got back.‎ W: It must be exciting playing the piano and traveling all the time.‎ M:①Well, playing the piano is great, but the traveling is not fun. Living out with the suitcase all the time. And I get so bored It’s not like playing the music, It’s like being a machine.‎ W: I wouldn’t mind being a machine for that money.‎ Text 9‎ M: It must be really fun getting to travel to so many interesting places. On your show, you describe yourself as an explorer. What do you mean by that? That seems like a strange name given to oneself.‎ W: An explorer is simply someone who explores. I go to a new part of the world and really allow myself to become part of the tribe.‎ M: What’s the craziest thing that you’ve had to do?‎ W: One time in Africa. DI had to eat a root that makes you dream while you are awake. Basically, it just makes you a little bit crazy for a few hours. When you eat this root, you have no idea what time it is, what day it is, or where you are. All you can do is feel the music.‎ M: Sounds like you really do live up to your name as an adventurer.
