Every scientist has to start somewhere. Many first determined they loved science in the classroom. Others found out as they experimented at home—building and designing new things. Here are some that spend their lives spreading their love of science.
Maria Christoforaki
Christoforaki is a high school student at the Lyceum of Gazi in Greece. In June 2016, she was part of a team from her school that competed in the European Cansat Competition. This is a contest in which teams build models of satellites. The satellite has to be the size and shape of a soft drink can. Much creativity is required — and Christoforaki says that is the best part.”Each moment I create,” she says, “I feel like I’m free.”
Kelly Knight
Knight is a forensic (法学的) scientist — someone who uses scientific techniques to help solve crimes. She’s a professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. But that’s not all she does. “I’m also a Zumba (尊巴舞) instructor and I have my motorcycle license,” she says. She’s still working for getting a motorcycle, though.
Sara MacSorley
MacSorley has a degree in science, who doesn’t work in a laboratory but is now the director of the Green Street Teaching and Learning Center at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Coon. She spends her time promoting education. MacSorley still loves science. She’s now working on a coloring book about women in science, technology, engineering and math.
Erin Winick
Winick was a student in mechanical engineering at the University of Florida in Gainesville. As an engineer, she also runs her own company, Sci Chic, making jewelry. Her science creativity also goes beyond jewelry. “I love sewing and have made everything from a Ms. Frizzle costume to a galaxy-patterned dress,” she says.
21. What can we know about Kelly Knight from the text?
A. She is a professional dancer. B. Her job involves handling crimes.
C. She devotes all her time to teaching. D. She spends much time riding motorcycles.
22. What can we infer from the story of Sara MacSorley?
A. There’s no age limit on a love of science. B. Scientists have a tendency to write a book.
C. Not all science lovers want to end up in a lab. D. Scientists tend to have many hobbies.
23. Who loves both science and fashion?
A. Christoforaki B. Knight C. MacSorley D. Winick
24. What do the four females have in common?
A. They are all scientists with working experience.
B. They deal with science in different fields.
C. They all fall in love with science at high school.
D. They make a difference in many fields.
B
I used to run away in fear when I heard the buzzing of a bee.But after spending a day at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida and getting up close to these insects, I no longer feel intimidated when seeing them.
At the bee yard, Mark Russell, the animal park’s director of gardening, had me suit up in a special suit to protect me from their attacks. I was a bit nervous but Russel explained that bees aren’t naturally aggressive. “They will protect their colony, but they won’t actively go after somebody,”he said. Once I suited up, Russell then showed how to use a smoker, a tool that uses the smoke of
burning wood. The bees sensed the smoke and began to slowly move out of the hive. This made it easy to get up close and personal with the bees.
Dr Croft is a senior veterinarian at SeaWorld. According to Dr Croft, honey is used regularly to treat injured animals. Not only is honey sweet, it also holds healing properties, which helps treat injuries such as cuts. “Honey has an antibacterial agent that works really well on wounds,” she said. “It promotes healing by sealing in the good tissue fluid that has enzymes and proteins.” The honey extracted(提取) at SeaWorld is kept refrigerated for about two weeks before it is ready to be used by the veterinarians. The raw honey is helping to heal fractured(破裂) turtle shells, as well as sea animals that have been struck by boats.
Contrary to what many may believe. I found out from my trip to SeaWorld that honeybees are not simply waiting around to sting people. They perform a task that is vital to our ecosystem and survival. They help keep plants and crops alive and the honey produced has many healing properties. No wonder bees are always busy working!
25. What does the underlined word “ intimidated” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. Frightened. B. Challenged. C. Puzzled. D. Appealed.
26. What is the main purpose of SeaWorld Orlando’s raising bees?
A. To stay close with them. B. To produce honey for people to eat.
C. To add more attractions to the theme park. D. To provide healing honey for injured animals.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Knowledge of bees B. Great SeaWorld C. A trip to a park D. Helpful honeybees
C
Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively(过多地) concerned with their own appearance and actions. Negative thought are constantly occuring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It’s obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’s self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way people behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, who have low respect, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others.
They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive(敏感的) to criticism. It makes them inferior(劣势;自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one:“you are just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.”It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness be completely get rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination since shyness goes hand in hand with lack of self respect. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and successful life.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The cause of shyness. B. The impression of shy people.
C. The effect of shyness on people. D. The questions in the minds of shy people.
29. What does the author think of self-awareness?
A. It’s harmful to people. B. It’s a weak point of shy people.
C. It’s the cause of unhappiness. D. It’s good for characteristic.
30. What is the shy people’s usual reaction to praise?
A. They are pleased with it. B. They feel it is not true.
C. They are very sensitive to it. D. They feel they are worthy of it.
31. We can learn from the text that shyness can ______.
A. block our chances for a successful life B. help us to live up to our full development
C. enable us to understand ourselves better D. sometimes be used to gain self respect
D
The most common advice we receive when we're depressed or sad is NOT to listen to sad songs. The reason is that sad songs will make us think of our pain, and we feel all the more depressed. But then, there are others who feel that listening to sad songs helps them ease the pain.
According to a study conducted by Dr Stephen Palmer of the University of California, Berkeley, if subjected to music that’s in line with our current emotions, we feel an instant connection with it. The connection helps us come out of our situation better than taking advice from a friend. A friend,
in such times, will only advise you, or worst, become judgmental about the situation. You don’t wish to listen to advice that would actually make you think too much when in tears, do you? You simply want someone to understand your situation, and sad songs do just that.
Listening to sad songs during times of grief is similar to having a friend who will understand all your emotions. The feelings you were unable to explain to your near and dear ones were easily put to words by these songs. Additionally, when you sit quietly, listening to sad music, you may feel tears rolling down your eyes. Once you’re done with releasing all these emotions, you’ll feel better.
In summary, sad songs help in healing a broken heart. Even if you aren’t in such a depressing situation, you’ll still enjoy listening to these songs. Sad songs have a comforting rhythm and tone to them, which help you relax. You, in fact, appreciate the efforts of the singers who lend their voice to these songs. Even though the emotions in these songs may be of the sad type, the calmness in them surely relaxes you.
32. What do most people tend to think of sad music?
A. They are boring. B. They are negative.
C. They are relaxing. D. They are inspiring.
33. What music should you choose to improve your mood in Dr Stephen’s opinion?
A. Sad songs. B. Happy songs.
C. Songs sounding beautiful. D. Songs matching your emotions.
34. According to the text, sad songs can make us feel better because they can ______.
A. distract us from worries B. remind us of good times
C. release our negative emotions D. keep our bad feelings in control
35. What should be the best title for the text?
A. Does music affect emotions? B. Can sad music worsen emotions?
C. Does sad music make us feel better? D. Is sad music better than exciting music?

Let kids help you. Don t complain when it's time to do housework. Smile and invite your son to help. ___38___ He will take these good feelings and learn to take ownership of his home and feel pride in keeping it up.
___39___ Make responsibilities age appropriate. You can show how to complete small tasks in daily life and perform them at a child’s skill level. For example, if your kid wants a snack, show him where the apples are and how to wash one off.
Teach your child consequences. Learning to take care of his things also helps a child develop a sense of responsibility for his actions. Get your son to clean up after an art project, and inform him that he won’t be able to play with his crayons the next day if he leaves a messy table. ___40___ The more you carry out the rules, the more likely he is to clean up without being asked.
A. Have a sense of responsibility.
B. Why do they make a sandwich for kids?
C. Show kids how to perform responsibility.
D. Where do these wonderful children come from?
E. Start to teach responsibility to kids early.
F. When your child is invited to participate, he feels valued.
