Meeting Our Hero
Matt Cohen’s first thought out of the car was, Why would I want to be outside the car?
Yet he and his buddy had planned to walk 3.1 miles up Camelback Mountain, just as every hiker visiting Phoenix does. So up the trail (小径) they started.
Right away, everything felt off. Matt and his friend are young, and proven backpackers. But with the heat, every two or three steps, they had to stop to drink.
They were 45 minutes in, now barely moving, and their eight quarts of water were almost gone.
“Time just slowed.”
From around a bend came a hiker moving down the trail with a backpack on his back.
“Are you guys OK?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Matt said.
The man searched Matt’s eyes. “You look like you’re about to pass out.”
Matt stared back at him, his dehydrated ( 脱 水 的 ) brain barely working. I know that face, he thought. Amazingly, he did. Matt had seen a video about the guy right at his desk in his office.
Matt is an associate photo editor for a magazine, and he had recently searched for a picture of a man devoted to saving hikers from the sneak (溜) -up-on-you heat of Camelback. His colleagues had read about this man and his deeds of hiking up and down Camelback helping hikers and wanted to put him in the magazine. Now the hero was in front of Matt, and it was Matt who needed saving.
Scott Cullymore guided Matt and his friend to a rocky seat. Then he pulled chilled bottles of Poland Spring from his insulated (隔热的) pack. Only then, sitting, did Matt realize, Wow, he’s right
— I am not doing well.
As he came to his senses, Matt eventually remembered he had his camera. This unprepared photograph of Scott, and his good deeds made it on the magazine.
“I don’t know what to say,” Matt said afterwards. “I talk to everyday heroes a lot for my job, but to get help from one — it made kindness and heroism all so real.”
1. Why didn’t Matt want to be outside the car?
A. Because it was hot out there.
B. Because Scott told him not to.

D. Because mountain-climbing had gone out of fashion.
2. What does the underlined word “off” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Away from a place. B. No longer available.
C. Far from being right. D. Not working or operating.
3. When did Matt first see Scott’s face?
A. When he was taking pictures for the magazine.
B. When Scott helped him and his friend on their hike.
C. When he and other proven hikers met at a gathering.
D. When the magazine planned to run a story about Scott.
4. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Matt lied about doing well when he first saw Scott on the mountain.
B. Matt and his friend went far along the trail after 45 minutes.
C. Getting help from everyday heroes is not unusual for Matt.
D. Scott helped Matt and his friend by offering them water.

In August 2018, NASA sent a new probe (探测器) into space. Instead of heading out to explore deep space, it headed to the center of our solar system. Called the Parker Solar Probe, it will make 24 orbits (轨道) of the sun. Each time, the probe will pass closer and closer to the star that gives Earth light and heat. At the closest point to the sun in its orbit, it will take measurements that will help scientists better understand the nature of the sun.
The Parker Probe is constructed in such a way that it is able to stand up to flying directly into the sun’s corona ( 日 冕 ). The heat shield ( 盾 ) on the probe experiences temperatures up to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,371 degrees Celsius), but the inner instruments remain at around room temperature. The Parker Probe accomplishes this by pointing its shield directly toward the sun.
The probe flew close to the sun for the first time on November 6, traveling at up to 375,000 miles per hour. While it was taking measurements, it passed behind the sun. Because it was on the opposite side of the sun from Earth, it could not send the measurements back to scientists on our planets. When the probe finally appeared from behind the sun on December 7, it was able to send its information. It also began sending photographs that its cameras had taken of the sun’s corona,
showing it in more detail than scientists had ever seen before.
For years, scientists have known that the sun’s corona is about 300 times hotter than the sun’s surface. Scientists don’t understand why this huge temperature difference exists. They hope that the data and photographs they get from the Parker Solar Probe will help solve this mystery.

Growing up, Javier Asensio rode the bus to school and around town on weekends. Then, when car-sharing arrived in Madrid a few years ago, he started driving more frequently. But for the past year he’s changed to another choice: electric scooters (小型摩托车) in a rainbow of bright colors available across the city. “Scooters are by far my first choice,” says the 27-year-old management consultant. “Traffic and parking are easy, and I love riding them.”
A half-dozen companies have flooded Madrid with electric sit-down scooters. Riders pick them up and drop them off anywhere in the city center and surrounding areas, paying about 25 cents per minute. They are booked and billed via a smartphone app, which can guide users to the nearest bike, track how long they’ve been riding, and e-mail a bill moments after they park. The city has about 5,000 scooters, up five times from a year ago—the world’s biggest fleet (车队), says Enrico Howe, an analyst at mobility consulting firm Motion Tag. Madrid is “the capital of scooter-sharing globally,” he says.
Madrid had long struggled with heavy traffic and the resulting noise, pollution, and
productivity loss. The government has fought back with various measures: electric car-sharing, zones where combustion engines ( 内 燃 机 ) face limitations, and a proposal for free Metro rides on bad days. E-scooters will be a necessary part of the strategy (策略). The city has made it legal for scooters to use bus lanes ( 车 道 ), has allowed them to push ahead of cars at traffic lights, and is seeking to expand the areas where they can be used.
For the companies that provide the services, Madrid has become a testing ground as they eye expansion across Europe and beyond. The city’s dry climate and overcrowded center make it a good place to try out equipment and better understand what users want. And with so many operators jumping into the market, they’ll all be forced to improve their efficiency if they hope to survive, says Luis Gonzalez, head of the local operations of Coup, a unit of Germany’s Robert Bosch GmbH that arrived in Madrid last year. This year, Coup expects to increase its fleet in the city by 60 percent, to more than 1,300 bikes. “The lessons we learn in Madrid will be surely applied elsewhere,” he says.
1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To arouse readers’ concern about the topic.
B. To lead to the main subject of the whole passage.
C. To explain why Javier loves riding sharing scooters.
D. To emphasize how important it is to travel on e-scooters.
2. Which of the following is not a reason for the popularity of scooter-sharing in Madrid?
A. They are easy to park.
B. It’s convenient to travel around on them.
C. It’s one of the measures the government takes.
D. You can find the scooter available for use with ease.
3. What can we learn from the article?
A. The competition in the scooter-sharing market will be fierce.
B. There will be some kind of limitation if expansion continues.
C. The government is not planning to promote this kind of service.
D. Companies flood into the market because it’s good for environment.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the article?
A. Testing Ground for E-Scooters. B. Crazy for E-Scooters in Madrid.
C. Sharing Economy makes Life Better. D. Opportunities Facing Madrid Government.

Test-Taking Tips
Passing tests is a huge part of succeeding at school. Clearly, if you want to do well on a test, you need to prepare by learning the material. 36
Just breathe
Even the best prepared students sometimes get nervous before a test. Nervous feelings can cause people to forget facts that they know. So one important test-taking tip is to try to relax. Breathing deeply is helpful for this. 37 Try to arrive for a test a few minutes early, so you
can relax before it starts.
My father once gave me a helpful piece of advice. If your stomach feels sick, that’s not actually bad. That’s the result of your body producing adrenaline (肾上腺素), which gives you energy to succeed. It might help to tell yourself that you’re excited, instead of nervous. That will help you think more positively, relax and do better.
Plan your time
When you are handed a test, look over all the questions before you begin. Read them carefully, noticing details. 38 Divide your time based on the percentage of the grade for each question.
First answer questions you know and then go back to the difficult ones. That way you don’t spend too long on one question.
But try to write an answer for every question on the test, even if you’re not sure of the answer.
39
If possible, try to finish early so you have time to review your answers and correct mistakes. 40
More often than not, your first instinct (直觉) will be correct.
Try your best
Above all, study well and try your best. If you do that, you can be proud of whatever score you
get.
A. Always read the whole question carefully.
B. But other actions can help make test-taking easier.
C. And it’s the most important if you want to pass tests.
D. Also pay attention to how many points each question is worth.
E. The only exception is if you will lose points for wrong answers.
F. If you’re not sure whether you should change an answer, it’s best not to.
G. So is moving your body slightly, such as by rolling your shoulders around.

Ever since I could remember, my mother and I have connected through music. As the matter of fact, one of my earliest memory is the sound of her singing voice through the halls of the big stone church. That is which she took singing lessons.
My mother introduced me with all kinds of music, but she was particular fond of Motown and British rock-and-roll from the 1960’s. As a result, I grew up listening bands like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles.
As I got older, I started developing my own taste in music, but that didn’t break their special bond. Explore my own styles and interests only strengthened our connection. It gave me something that I could share it with her. Every time we went record shopping, that impressed me most was coming home, having coffee and sharing the treasures we’d found on our tour.

Dear Matthew,
I’m very glad to know that you like the program.
In China there remains a sea of ancient poems, which are an important part of Chinese traditional culture. Many people love these poems very much because they convey philosophies of life in a simple but rather beautiful way. Although poetry is not as popular among young people as it used to be, I believe with the increase of such activities, more and more teenagers will fall in love with poetry. Also I believe poetry will regain its life as long as it mirrors modern society and reality.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: You’re welcome, sir.

M: I was looking forward to visiting Paris with my family this summer. But now I’m worried. My feet sometimes hurt and I can’t walk long distance.
W: That shouldn’t stop you from enjoying that beautiful city. There are lots of ways to see Paris that don’t need much walking.
M: I didn’t know that. What are they?
W: You can always take a bus trip. It goes everywhere. Then there are the boat trips along the river that give you another view of the city. It’s very beautiful. You must do it.
M: That’s great. I think I’ll have a good time. Thanks for your help.

W: It’s great that you’re coming to visit us at last, Toby.
M: Yeah. After writing letters for so long, it will be good to meet.
W: Sorry I can’t come to the airport but Sam, my brother, will be there. He’s quite tall and he’s got straight short hair. He’s got blue eyes and he wears glasses.
M: OK. It shouldn’t be too difficult to spot him. Tell Sam I’ve got dark curly hair — it’s quite short — and dark eyes. I’m quite slim and not very tall.
W: All right. You’ll have your mobiles anyway. I’ll give you his number.
M: All right.

W: In today’s program we have the famous actor, Peter Jameson, who is known above all for his classical roles on stage, particularly in Shakespeare plays. Peter, was it your choice to appear so often in this type of play?
M: Well, that’s an interesting question. Actually, I’ve always seen myself as an actor, a professional actor doing whatever comes along, rather than classical roles, Shakespeare and so on, although of course I do find those wonderful.
W: I remember seeing you playing many big parts. You must have had lots of words to remember. How can you manage that?
M: It was a gift originally. I’ve always had a sort of photographic memory, right from my earliest childhood. My subject at university was history actually, for which a memory is basic.
W: Some of your theater performances have been recorded and shown on TV. Have you ever watched them?
M: I’ve always avoided watching myself anyway. Though I’m satisfied with my performance on stage, I still feel foolish to see myself on TV. It makes me feel strange and embarrassed.
W: OK, thank you very much, Peter.

W: I never thought I’d be the type to go on a cookery course! My mum and my sister always used to laugh at me, because though I love eating, I couldn’t make anything myself. Then one day my cousin decided she wanted to have cooking classes. She didn’t want to do them on her own, though. I agreed to go along. You could do one-day, three-day or one-week courses. We thought a week should be enough to get us started, so we chose that during the summer holidays.
When we got there on the first morning, loads of people had already arrived. I knew it was a popular course, with lots of teenagers like me there. What I hadn’t expected was that there’d be so many teachers — you got plenty of help that way and I certainly needed it.
We learnt how to make a cake in the first class. And that was a really good way to get started. Another thing we did was go out and visit places — though we didn’t go to any restaurants. But there were a few markets nearby. And we visited one of the best ones. We passed a couple of supermarkets on the way, but we didn’t go in.
