[2019·湖北省四地七校2月联考]British chemist David Evans has become an overnight celebrity on Chinese social media. His chemistry experiments have attracted over 2 million followers in just a few months. Evans is a chemistry professor at Beijing University of Chemical Technology. The 60yearold always wears a white lab coat, a pair of safety goggles(护目镜), and smiles often. Some web users say he looks just like “the Grandpa of KFC”.
Evans has posted videos of various experiments. His most popular experiments have attracted millions of hits on videosharing apps. Excited children's cheers and shouts can be heard in his videos. “I hope my experiments can arouse people's interest in science,” he says.
Evans has been interested in China since childhood. In the early 1970s, before the reform and openingup, he viewed China as “a country full of mysteries”. He first visited the Chinese mainland in 1987 to attend a chemistry conference in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. He quit his job in the United Kingdom and moved to Beijing in 1996. Many of his friends thought he was crazy. But Evans said they just saw China's challenges but not its potential.
Since 2011, Evans has turned to the Internet to popularize science. He learned shortvideo apps are also popular in small cities and rural areas. And he realized
- 8 -
this enables him to reach more students, who lack opportunities to perform fun experiments. But even a oneminute video requires a considerable amount of work. Still, he thinks it's worth it to fulfill his responsibility to popularize science.
His experiments always fill schools' lecture halls with laughter. Some viewers call him “a Harry Potterlike magician”, but he disagrees. “A magician never tells the secrets behind his tricks, but a scientist always gives an explanation.” He sees himself as a teacher. He performs experiments to spread knowledge, inspire thinking, remove misunderstandings and show that science can create change. Evans says he looks forward to more “chemical reactions” with China.

[2020·石家庄一模]A new “Magic Bench” designed by Disney Research lets you interact (互动) with lovely animated (动画的) characters — and no special glasses or earphones are required. Instead, the complete environment — the seat, the sitter and the cartoon characters—is mirrored on a screen opposite the bench making it
- 8 -
possible for others to watch the scene unfold.
How does the illusion work? A camera and sensor catch images and gather depth information about physical objects — the bench and the person. And then a computer translates them into the 3D animations. Meanwhile sensors of touch built into the bench deliver shaking that is happening at the same time and speed to animated actions on the screen, creating the illusion that the animated figures are occupying realworld space next to the user.
“Our goal for this project was: hear characters coming, see them enter the space, and feel them sit next to you,” said Moshe Mahler, principal digital artist at Disney Research. Unlike the traditional mobile technology, one of whose limitations is that only a single user can see its illusion, the Magic Bench allows groups of people to gather in a single environment and collectively participate in an augmented reality(扩充实境) experience, all at the same time.
In a video show, a small cartoon donkey runs into view and kicks the bench, causing a sharp sound and making the seated person jump in surprise. Another test shows two people on the bench, reacting as they “feel” an animated rabbit skip up beside them and jump up and down. When a user passes his hand over the rabbit, a shadow moves across its head, as though it were occupying the same physical space as the person next to it.
8.What does the Magic Bench need to work properly?
A.Special glasses. B.Earphones.
C.A mirror. D.A screen.
9.What does the underlined word “illusion” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The shaking that is happening.
B.The 3D animations on the screen.
C.The figures about physical objects.
D.The interaction with animated figures.
10.How is the Magic Bench different from the traditional technology?
A.Its fantasy can be seen only by a single user.
B.It is designed to create more animated characters.
C.It allows many people to experience the fantasy together.
D.Its user and the animated character occupy the same space.
11.Which is the best title of the text?
A.Magic Bench Puts You in the Picture

B.Audiences Become Cartoon Characters
C.Entertainment Industry Enters a New Stage
D.Disney's Cartoon Figures Come into Reality

If you are planning your first road trip or vacation with children, there are several important things to consider.

__4__. This is a must even during the shortest road trip. You can handle a headache, but your child can't. If you do not know what to put in your first aid kit(急救箱), consult your children's doctor, because all children are different and the medicines either.
Apart from the above, money, passports, avoiding heavy luggage, picking a familyfriendly destination and familyfriendly accommodation are also needed. Traveling with kids is exciting and interesting. Your first trip might not be so exciting, but with a careful preparation, your family trip will be the most memorable one. __5__.

- 8 -
He looked at himself in the mirror.
She saw herself mirrored in the window.
Instead, the complete environment—the seat, the sitter and the cartoon characters—is mirrored on a screen opposite the bench making it possible for others to watch the scene unfold.
分析:“making it possible for others to watch the scene unfold”作该句的结果状语;其中it为形式宾语,真正的宾语为动词不定式“to watch the scene unfold”。
根据第一段第二句“Instead, the complete environment—the seat, the sitter and the cartoon characters—is mirrored on a screen opposite the bench making it possible for others to watch the scene unfold”可知,屏幕是该互动技术所需要的,故D项正确。
干扰项分析:根据第一段第一句中“no special glasses or earphones are required”可知,不需要特殊的眼镜和耳机,故A、B两项错误;C项文章中没有提及。
根据第一段的内容,尤其是第一句中的“lets you interact(互动) with lovely animated(动画的) characters”可知,这种方式让观众和可爱的动画人物互动;结合第二段第一句“How does the illusion work?”
根据第三段第二句“Unlike the traditional mobile technology, one of whose limitations is that only a single user can see its illusion, the Magic Bench allows groups of people to gather in a single environment and collectively participate in an augmented reality (扩充实境) experience, all at the same time”可知,与传统移动技术不同的是,传统移动技术的限制之一是只有一个用户可以看到这种互动,而Magic Bench允许一群人聚集在一个单独的环境中集体同时参与互动体验,故C项正确。

1.E 依据下文的“many parents sometimes lose their kids”可知,该空应该是造成家长丢失孩子的原因,又联系下文中的“Popular tourist destinations are overcrowded, too”可知E项“机场和火车站通常过于拥挤”符合语境。
