But it can be hard to keep a secret. We’re often tempted to “spill the beans(说漏嘴)”, even if we regret it later.‎ ‎ According to Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine, US, keeping a secret may well “become a burden”. This is because people often have an “obsessive and anxious urge to share it with someone”.‎ ‎ An earlier study, led by Anita E. Kelly, a scientist at the University of Notre Dame, US, suggested that keeping a secret could cause stress. People entrusted(受委托的) with secrets can suffer from depression, anxiety, and body aches, reported the Daily Mail.‎ ‎ But with secrets so often getting out, why do people share them at all? Shah explained that people often feel that it will help them keep a person as a friend. Another reason people share secrets is guilt over keeping it from someone close to them. A sense of distrust can develop when people who are close do not share it with each other. “Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone,” according to Shah.‎ ‎ He added that talkative people could let secrets slip out (泄露). But this doesn’t mean that it is a good idea only to share secrets with quiet people. A quiet person may be someone who keeps everything inside. To tell such a person a secret may cause them stress, and make them talk about the secret. Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret.‎ ‎ Shah said that to judge whether to tell someone a secret, you’d better put yourself in their position. Think about how you would feel to be told that you mustn’t give the information away. Shah also recommended that if you accidentally give up someone’s secret you should come clean about it. Let the person know that their secret isn’t so secret anymore.‎ 1. What does underlined word “obsessive” mean?‎ ‎ A. Unwilling. B. Confusing.‎ ‎ C. Wanting to do something very much. D. Refusing to accept facts.‎ 1. What is the main message of Paragraph 5?‎ ‎ A. It’s better to share your secrets with quiet people.‎ ‎ B. Quiet people suffer less stress from keeping secrets.‎ ‎ C. Talkative people are unlikely to keep secrets.‎ ‎ D. It’s not a good idea to share your secrets with others.‎ 2. What does Shah suggest people do if they give away someone’s secret by accident?‎ ‎ A. Stay away from the person.‎ ‎ B. Tell the affected person what happened.‎ ‎ C. Exchange a new secret with the person.‎ ‎ D. Buy the person a gift as an apology.‎ C A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the candy they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.‎ By the time the children reach high school, something amazing has happened. A survey found that those who was four year old had enough self-control to hold out generally and grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily upset in time of difficulties and inflexible. ‎ ‎ Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.     ‎ The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would defeat a less resistant (有抵抗力的) person.          Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence ‎: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.     ‎ EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together, how one’s ability handles stress, for instance, affecting the ability to concentrate and putting intelligence to use. Among the ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.      While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse. ‎ 1. At the beginning of the text the author mention the experiment is intended to .‎ ‎ A. make the readers amused B. prove the scientist’s wisdom ‎ C. introduce the topic of the text D. show us how to do an IQ test 2. The experiment with the four-year-olds shows us that .  ‎ ‎ A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment ‎ ‎ B. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success ‎ ‎ C. emotional intelligence won’t show up until adolescence ‎ D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence ‎ 3. The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means . ‎ ‎ A. positive       B. negative C. impatient D.  friendly   ‎ 4. From the passage we learn that . ‎ ‎ A. EQ does not have any connection with IQ ‎ B. The higher a person’s IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is ‎ C. Brain theory is able to explain what we wonder about most ‎ ‎ D. Scientists haven’t discovered the way EQ and IQ work together ‎ D It was a sunny Monday morning in the spring of 1966. I drove down York Avenue looking for a customer. I was stopping at a light just opposite New York Hospita1 when I saw a well-dressed man dashing down the hospital steps. He was waving to me. Just then, the light turned green, the driver behind me honked impatiently, and I heard a policeman’s whistle. But I wasn’t about to lose this ride. Maybe the man could make me have a lucky start. ‎ ‎“LaGuardia Airport, please,” the man said after jumping in, “And thanks for waiting.”‎ After what seemed a long silence, he started a conversation.‎ ‎“How do you like driving a taxi?”‎ ‎“It’s OK,” I said, “I make a living and meet interesting people sometimes. But if I could get a job making $100 a week more, I’d take it just like you would.” ‎ His reply interested me. “I would not change jobs if it meant I had to take a cut of a hundred a week,” I’d never heard anyone say such a thing. ‎ I’ve always been curious about people. Many times during long rides, I’d developed a close relationship with my passengers. And quite often I’d received very good advice from accountants, lawyers and plumbers. Maybe it was that this fellow clearly loved his work; maybe it was just the pleasant mood of a spring morning. Somehow I decided to ask for his help. ‎ ‎“Could I ask a big favor of you? I have a son, 15, a good kid. He’s doing well in school. We’d like him to go to camp this summer, but he wants a job, but I can’t offer him one such.” I paused. “Is there any possibility that you might get him some kind of a summer job—even if he doesn’t get paid?” He didn’t talk and I was starting to feel foolish for bringing up the subject. After a long time, he said, “Well, the medical students have a summer research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school record. ” It was the last time I ever saw him. ‎ That evening sitting around the dining room table with my family, I announced proudly, “This could be a summer job for you, Robbie.” He read it out loud: “Fred ‎ Plum, N. Y. Hosp.” My wife: “Is he a doctor?” My son: “Is he an apple?” After I yelled and finally threatened to cut off his allowance (零花钱), Robbie sent off his grades the next morning. ‎ The fruit joke continued for a few days, but gradually the incident was forgotten. Two weeks later, when I arrived home from work, my son was smiling. He handed me a letter addressed to him. The letterhead read “Fred Plum, MD, Neurologist-in Chief, New York Hospital.” He was to phone Plums secretary for an interview. Robbie got the job. The white lab coat he wore made him feel a lot more important than he really was as he followed Plum around the hospital, doing minor tasks for him. The following year, he was given more responsibility. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation for universities. Much to our delight, Robbie was accepted at Brown University. He worked at the hospital for a third year and gradually developed a love of the medical profession. As university graduation approached, Robbie applied to medical school, and Plum again wrote letters proving his ability and character. Eventually Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College. ‎ Some might call it fate, and I guess it was. But it shows you that big opportunities can come out of ordinary encounters --- even something as ordinary as a taxi ride. ‎ 1. The reason why the author was unwilling to lose the ride was that he thought .‎ ‎ A. the traffic light was still red. ‎ ‎ B. good luck could come to him.‎ ‎ C. he didn’t hear a policeman’s warning. ‎ ‎ D. the driver behind him was waiting patiently.‎ 2. What probably did Plum mean by saying “I would not change jobs if it meant I had to take a cut of a hundred a week. ”?‎ ‎ A. Plum was very satisfied with his present job. ‎ ‎ B. Plum thought taxi driver was a poor job, and the author should quit his job. ‎ ‎ C. Plum believed that changing jobs meant the rise of his salary. ‎ ‎ D. Plum hoped that he would change his job if his salary were cut down. ‎ 1. What led the author to decide to turn to Plum for help?‎ ‎ A. The sunny morning left him in a good mood. ‎ ‎ B. The author had no ability to give his own son a summer job. ‎ ‎ C. He had always received good advice from the passengers. ‎ ‎ D. The pleasant feeling he developed when talking with Plum. ‎ 2. From the story, we learn that Plum was .‎ ‎ A. helpful and responsible B. friendly and distinguished ‎ C. kind-hearted and outgoing D. good-tempered and grateful 3. Which of the following can serve as the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Actions Speak Louder than Words. ‎ ‎ B. Fate Favors the Minds That Are Prepared. ‎ ‎ C. Small Opportunities Make a Big Difference. ‎ ‎ D. Good Communication Skills Are Half Done. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Who would win in a competition to memorize numbers, a chimp or a teenager? The teenager? Think again. Scientists have proved that chimps perform better than human beings when it comes to this kind of problem.‎ ‎ 66 ‎ Memory is our ability to learn something, save it and recall it when needed. Our memories are important to our sense of self, our personalities, and our ability to understand the world.‎ ‎ 67 There is short-term memory and long-term memory. Your short-term memory saves information for a few seconds or a few minutes. 68 Long-term memory involves the information you try hard to keep, because it’s meaningful to you --- an example is data about family and friends. And then there is visual memory and ‎ sound memory. But these are not hard and fast. In fact, Scientists argue a lot about the nature of memory.‎ ‎ 69 Some memorize better with the help of pictures. Others are helped more by sounds. One thing’s for sure though: If you can put the different kinds of memory together, there can be great results. 70 At the same time, you could listen to recordings of the same group of words. These things may help when it comes to memorizing the words.‎ Imagination and association can be useful too. By imagination, scientists mean picturing a word in your mind, while association means relating the word to something you already know.‎ ‎ A. So why not try pictures with English words?‎ ‎ B. Then how do chimps have better memories than us?‎ ‎ C. Scientists say that there are different types of memory.‎ ‎ D. We may have to rethink what we believe about human memory.‎ ‎ E. Scientists have also found that people memorize things in different ways.‎ ‎ F. For example, the time it takes to compare the prices of a few items in a store.‎ ‎ G. Short-term and long-term memory differ in the amount of information they can store.‎ 第II卷(非选择题,共40分)‎ 第一部分:短文填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)‎ 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。‎ ‎ A couple had been married for over 60 years. We didn’t have one sunny day!‎ W: Oh, dear, a week in the rain, poor you.‎ M: Well, that’s the funny thing. It never actually rained. It was just freezing. We thought it might even snow.‎ Text4:‎ M: So, what seems to be the problem?‎ W: Well, I’m not feeling very well. I’ve got a really bad headache, a cough and my throat hurts. ‎ M:Ok, come and lie down over there.‎ Text5:‎ M: How is your grandma feeling these days?‎ W: Much better, thanks. She will be coming home in a few days. The operation was a success and she’ll recover soon.‎ Text6:‎ M: Hi, Amy, glad to see you here.‎ W: Oh, Hi, Steve. We haven’t seen each other for years since we left school. I remember you are a big fan of the Rockets, right?‎ M: Yeah. Well, I’m not sure they deserved to lose. It didn’t seem like a fair result to me.‎ W: I think it was the judge’s fault.‎ M: Well, I’m not really convinced he was to blame. They just didn’t have any luck today.‎ W: Let’s hope things go our way a bit more next week.‎ M: Yes. If they keep playing like that everyone’s going to go to sleep. It wasn’t exactly exciting to watch.‎ Text 7:‎ W: Tell us something, Mr. Smith, about New York City.‎ M: It is a wonderful city, without doubt the most interesting city in the world today, but I’m afraid the weather is not very good.‎ W: Is it very cold in New York, Mr. Smith?‎ M: Sometimes it’s very cold, and sometimes it’s very warm. On some days in winter it seems that there is no colder place in the world because the air, while cold, is also wet. And in summer it’s very hot. There is little wind. The air is often damp and heavy. ‎ W: Is the weather always unpleasant?‎ M: Oh, no. There are many beautiful days in New York, especially in the spring and in the autumn. The really unpleasant part is that the weather in New York changes often and so suddenly.‎ Text 8:‎ W: Finally, here comes the summer holiday. Where are you and your family going on vacation this summer?‎ M: We haven’t decided yet. Mum’s brought a few brochures home and I’ve had a look at them. But I still can’t make up my mind. Do you have some place in your mind worth a visit?‎ W: Hmm… You can go to France and visit castles.‎ M: We did that last year. And it was really boring. What do you think of this one? “Italy for art lovers. Spend two weeks in Italy. You will visit art galleries in Florence and Venice.”‎ W: I’d like to do that in winter. In summer, I prefer to do things outside. I’d like to go to a hotel with lots of tennis courts, or learn to water-ski.‎ M: I think this one’s pretty interesting. “Learn Scottish dancing in Scotland.” What do you think?‎ W: I don’t like it. Who wants to go to Scotland and sit in the rain all day?‎ Text9:‎ W: Hello.‎ M: Rachel, tell us about your day.‎ W: Well, it all starts with the huge pile of post we get. We often get artists sending in photographs of their work to see if we’d be interested in exhibiting it.‎ M: So you are busy all day.‎ W: Yes. Sometimes I spend nearly all day on the phone and about fifty percent of the time it’s artists. We have a new artist exhibiting here about every two weeks.‎ M: And the best part of the job for you?‎ W: The really rewarding thing for me is that you never know how a day is going to go. Some days it’ll be really quiet, other days it’s really busy and you don’t know what you’re going to have to deal with. Of course I find great pleasure spending my days surrounded by beautiful works of art, so I am satisfied.‎ M: Thank you Rachel, and now we’ll move on to …‎ Text10:‎ M: My name is John Croft. For three years and six months, I worked as a taxi driver for Downtown Taxi in Vancouver. I drove my cab five days a week from 3:00 in the afternoon until around 12:00 at night. There were traffic jams every afternoon, but it didn’t bother me. Most passengers were nice enough, although I can’t remember most of them. I liked to show tourists our beautiful city. A lot of tourists from Asia visited Vancouver. In the evening, I took people out to restaurants, clubs and theatres. It was interesting to see people dressed in their best clothes for parties. The most interesting customer I had was a man dressed as a bird! I can still remember the scene clearly and I think I’ll never forget it. My cab was always clean and I always tried to be friendly. The trip to the airport was usually my biggest tip. I liked my job and made a comfortable living. However, as we know, it is really a tiring job. So I don’t drive a taxi anymore. Now I have lots of free time, but sometimes I miss meeting new people.‎
