It was raining as I ran out of the church. Across the street was a gas station, which was closed for
Christmas, but I noticed a family standing under the narrow overhang(屋檐) to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I couldn’t wait to see my gifts.
Once I got home, there was hardly any time to enjoy my gifts. My grandparents were still waiting for us to have Christmas dinner together at their house. As we drove down the highway, I noticed that the family was still there.
The closer we got to my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned and said, “I can’t stand it!” “What?” asked my mother. “It’s those people back there at the gas station, standing in the rain.”
When my father pulled into the station, I saw there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy. Then we learned that the family was waiting for the bus to Birmingham, where the man planned to find a job.
“Well, that bus won’t come along for several hours. Winborn’s just a few miles away, and there is a shed(车棚) with a cover over there,” my father advised. “I’ll pick you up there.”
Then they climbed into our car. My father asked the children if Father Christmas had found them. Three sad faces gave him his answer.
“Well, Father Christmas said he was having trouble finding you, so he just left your toys at my house this morning. Let’s go to get them first,” my father said. All at once, the three children’s faces brightened up.
When we arrived at our house, one girl spied a lovely doll, that little boy took a ball, and the other girl picked up something else. That was the Christmas when I learned the joy of making others happy.
25. At the gas station the family might feel _____.
A. anxious B. disappointed C. frightened D. ashamed

This month, the singing competition, American Idol, will come to an end. With a group of famous judges and a wide range of talents, it is clear that the competitive atmosphere of American Idol will remain unrivaled by any other show. After all, its success has been “unmatched in broadcasting history”.
American Idol first aired on Fox on June 11, 2002, and came from the British series Pop Idol.
Through an application, contestants were entered in the competition and thereafter, chosen to audition(试镜) for the show. Each candidate would have to perform a piece to a board of judges, and participate in a strict selection process. At the end of this stage, only twenty-four to thirty-six artists were chosen to move on to the semi-final stage. Soon, the fate of the contestants would be decided by the public. During the candidate’s live performance, a toll-free(免费的) telephone number was displayed on the screen for viewers to dial, to cast their votes. At the end of the night, only thirteen lucky singers would be left in the competition by the finals, only eight contestants would remain. Finally, a winner was announced every season. Though only the winner would receive a million dollar reward, other contestants would have had a chance to be known by the public.
What made American Idol so popular was how it introduced voting into the TV system. Unlike any other show, American Idol allowed viewers to decide the competition’s final victor.

The French health minister, Marisol Touraine, said 90 people in total had taken part in the trial and took the drug. All trials on the drug have been stopped and the French government has started the official process to find out why the accident occurred.
The ministry said the test was carried out by the Biotrial clinic for Bial. The drug was a so-called FAAH inhibitor, which deals with pain.

第二节、书面表达
Dear Editor,
In the last exam, my former classmate got higher scores than me because of cheating. But I didn’t. What I have done is right, even though my performance may not be so pleasing.
As is known to all, cheating in studieshas bad effectsonour personal development, which suggests ourtotal lack of honesty. What some of my schoolmates did is completely wrong. If they are not aware of their mistakes, they will undoubtedly lose in time. As for my parents, I will share my ideas with them, trying to get their understanding and encouragement.
From my point of view, we are supposed to focus on full preparations before examinations. Proper examinations help to test how well we have learned. Therefore, we can benefit more from honest scores
rather than cheating in examinations. What does matter is that we should be brave to face challenges.
What’s your opinion?
Yours sincerely
