People are overweight for many reasons, the most important one of which is that they eat the wrong foods, get the wrong types of calories per meal, and they also eat meals at the wrong time each day.Food is more powerful than any weight loss pill, because the food that you eat can either make you thin or fat. This is true because your body is like an engine, and it only needs certain foods at certain intervals(间隔)each day.
Low-calorie Diets Do Not Work
The reason people cannot lose weight by starving themselves is that their metabolism(新陈代谢)will detect any major drop in calories and it will then adjust(调整)itself by burning fewer calories each day. That is the reason why you can eat 1,000 calories per day and not lose any weight, while your friends can eat 2,500 calories per day and not gain any weight.
Low-fat Diets Do Not Work
Many people in today's society are buying mostly low- fat or non-fat food at the grocery store. Everybody knows how much fat is inside the food they buy. However, people are getting fatter than ever before by doing this. They are not losing weight by changing to this low-fat lifestyle.
Losing weight has nothing to do with these things. One of the most important things you can do to control your weight is to eat the proper foods, such as fruit and vegetables, eat them at the right
time, and exercise every day. If people make this a habit, they will lose weight.

Can you imagine what our life will be like in the future? Will it be better, worse or nothing will change? Experts researching this aspect predict that life will probably be very different in 2050.
First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. A computer will send the program directly to the television. On TV screen appear holograms, which are pictures with certain height, width and depth. We will be able to see, smell and touch the things that we see on television.
Water has become one of our most serious problems. Agriculture is changing and people are growing more fruit and vegetables to export. Demand for water will increase ten times in 2050. Some futurologists predict that water will be the cause of war if we don’t act now.
In transport, cars will run on new fuels and go very fast. A car will have computers to control its speed and there won’t be any accidents. On the other hand, space planes will take people around the earth in about three hours. People will fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo by space plane in just half an hour.
In the field of technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere. They do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day.
Medicine technology will have conquered many diseases by 2050; we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again. Scientists have discovered how to control genes. They have already produced clones of animals and will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. If you want all this to come true, you should study science and technology hard.
24. What is the main difference between today’s and 2050’s TV?
A. We can touch the things we see on TV.
B. We can talk with the characters appearing on TV.
C. We can choose whatever we like to see on TV.
D. We can use a computer to turn off the TV set.
25. What will be more likely to cause the war in the future?
A. The shortage of robots. B. The less farmland.
C. The shortage of water. D. The more space planes.
26. Which of the following is TRUE about the transport in the future?
A. Robots will control the speed of the car.
B. We can travel around the earth in about three hours.
C. There will be more flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo.
D. Cars can run without any fuel.
27. From the passage we can infer that by 2050 ____.
A. people will spend less time in studying
B. more and more people needn’t go to school
C. no patients will be found in the world
D. people will have more time to relax or rest

I never saw my father home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a “night out with the boys”. He had no bobbies but just took care of his family.
For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 am. He was always interested in my life-how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.
Nine years ago when I bought me first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked, was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.
Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set (秋千) for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him, But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.
The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1995, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed (发誓) that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him and really get to know him.
I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about every single day.
28. We know from the reading that the father_____.
A. liked to paint houses B. had no friends around him
C. was not healthy in his youth D. thought of his family as his all
29. When her father painted her first house, the daughter_____.
A. could only afford a glass of iced tea
B. was too busy to talk to her father
C. could do nothing but hold a paintbrush
D. spent eight hours a day working with her father
30. On January 16, 1995, the daughter felt that her father_____.
A. seemed to be a little different
B. had no time to phone her as usual
C. became interested in church
D. had forgotten to discuss some things with her
31. Which is the best title of the reading?
A. Painting Houses B. Daughter’s Family
C. Father and I D. Father’s phone calls
D
Recently, my mother asked me to drop off some letters at the post office and pick up some stamps for her. Without giving it a thought, I took the letters and purchased her stamps.
A few days later, she mentioned that one of the letters I had mailed was missing a stamp, and asked me if I had put a stamp on it. She had remembered asking me to put a stamp on it, though I certainly had not heard her. So, unfortunately, it looked like the letter, which was a bill of course, would come back marked "Return to Sender for Insufficient Postage". A few days went by and I
returned to the post office to pick up our mail. While I was there, I saw the postmaster and happened to tell him about Mom’s letter missing the stamp. I asked him to be on the lookout for it coming back. It was then that he told me his story. "You know," he said, "I immediately saw after you had dropped the mail off that your letter was missing a stamp. I also noticed that it was a bill for a credit card company. I thought to myself that you have always been kind to me and my partner, and I wanted to return the favor. So, to prevent your mother from getting charged a late fee from the credit card company, I took money from our change dish (extra pennies for folks who need one), and purchased a stamp for you."
When I heard it, I couldn’t believe it. What a blessing that was! I thanked him over and over again for putting the stamp on the letter for us. Then, I immediately dumped(倾倒) all the change out of my purse and into the penny dish in order to help others out in the future. When I got home, I was able to tell Mom the good news. This was kindness karma(因果报应) in action, I believe!

B.She might be charged some money.
C.She may lose an important message.
D.She may have to give up her credit card.
35.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author __________.
A.didn’t believe what the postmaster said

C.gave the postmaster money to buy stamps.
D.thought highly of what the postmaster did

I taught in Tokyo, Japan, and I thought I had prepared myself pretty well. I was really excited about teaching because it was my first paid job. I began each class by introducing myself. I could see the excitement in my students 'faces. Their warm welcome made me feel comfortable. and so I let them ask me some questions. To my surprise, I was asked questions like“ How old are you?”“ Are you married?”" Why aren't you married? ""Why did you come to Japan? "I was really surprised because you should not ask people you met for the first time such personal questions in Canada. After this happened in several classes, I stopped giving the students chance to ask me these questions, I later found out that these questions are acceptable in Japan, and that is not information that is considered too personal. Once I realized that the students didn’t mean to be impolite and actually cared about me, I felt much more comfortable about my first experiences.
