He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands trembling slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?” I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon – in complete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice. Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me? “Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly. “It’s your turn,” he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life. Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one – without any words – can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.‎ 24. What did David do when he first met the author?‎ A. He ran excitedly.‎ C. He looked a little uneasy.‎ B. He walked energetically. ‎ D. He showed up with his teacher.‎ 25. What was the author’s reaction to David as a psychologist?‎ A. He was ready to listen to David. B. He was able to describe David’s problem. C. He was sure of handling David’s problem.‎ D. He was skeptical about his own psychological ability.‎ 26. Why did David enjoy staying with the author?‎ A. Because he wanted to ask the author for advice. B. Because he needed to share sorrow with the author. C. Because he liked the children’s drawings in the office. D. Because he beat the author many times in the chess game.‎ 27. What can be inferred about David from the passage?‎ A. He recovered after months of treatment. B. He liked biking before he lost his family. C. He went into university soon after starting to talk. D. He got friends in school before he met the author.‎ C A California family drives a car that could help protect the environment. When Jon and Sandy go to the store or to their daughters’ soccer games, they drive in high-tech style. They drive a $1 million, fuel-cell-powered car. It may be the world’s most expensive car and one of the most environmentally friendly cars. The FCX is the first fuel-cell-powered car to be used by a family anywhere in the world. The FCX uses hydrogen and oxygen for fuel. Car makers have been working to develop vehicles that are better for the environment. They are developing cars that use fuel other than gasoline. ‎ And then what is fuel cell technology? Fuel cell technology works by changing the chemicals hydrogen and oxygen into water. This process produces electricity, and water ‎ vapor which comes out of the exhaust pipe. Most cars release dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Many scientists say these gases are major contributors to global warming. “The FCX is driven just like any other vehicle on the road, but without the gases which pollute the environment,” scientists say. Fuel cell technology has been around since the 1800s, but scientists have yet been to perfect it. They say it may take years before the technology is ready for widespread use. Another earth-friendly car is already on the market. Hybrid cars use both gasoline and an electric motor. They are becoming more popular with customers because they cut pollution and improve fuel efficiency.‎ 24. Which of the following about the FCX is not true?‎ A. It lets out dangerous gases to pollute the air.‎ B. It may be the most expensive car in the world. C. It is one of the most environmentally friendly cars. D. It uses hydrogen and oxygen for fuel other than gasoline.‎ 25. According to the passage, what is the major cause for global warming?‎ A. Gases from FCX.‎ C. Hydrogen and oxygen.‎ B. Gases from cars. D. Water vapor from cars.‎ 26. From the passage, we know that fuel cell technology _______.‎ A. works by water B. works by electricity C. has been widely used since the 1800s D. has a history for over two hundred years 27. What can we infer from the passage?‎ A. there will be no gasoline for cars. B. global warming has been stopped. ‎ C. people can’t afford to buy cars in the future. D. future cars will be environmentally friendly. D Far from the land of Antarctica, a huge shelf of ice meets the ocean. At the underside ‎ of the shelf there lives a small fish, the Antarctic cod. For forty years scientists have been curious about that fish. How does it live where most fish would freeze to death? It must have some secret. The Antarctic is not a comfortable place to work and research has been slow. Now it seems we have an answer. Research was begun by cutting holes in the ice and catching the fish. Scientists studied the fish’s blood and measured its freezing point. The fish were taken from seawater that had a temperature of -1.88°C and many tiny pieces of ice floating in it. The blood of the fish did not begin to freeze until its temperature was lowered to -2.05°C. That small difference is enough for the fish to live at the freezing temperature of the ice-salt mixture. The scientists’ next research job was clear: Find out what in the fish’s blood kept it from freezing. Their search led to some really strange thing made up of a protein never before seen in the blood of a fish. When it was removed, the blood froze at seawater temperature. When it was put back, the blood again had its antifreeze quality and a lowered freezing point. Study showed that it is an unusual kind of protein. It has many small sugar molecules (分子) held in special positions within each big protein molecule. Because of its sugar content, it is called a glycoprotein. So it has come to be called the antifreeze fish glycoprotein, or AFGP.‎ 32. Why can the Antarctic cod live at the freezing temperature?‎ A. It loves to live in the ice-salt mixture. B. A special protein keeps it from freezing. ‎ C. The seawater has a temperature of -1.88°C. D. Its blood has a temperature lower than -2.05°C.‎ 33. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?‎ A. Fish blood.‎ C. A newly found protein.‎ B. Sugar molecule. ‎ D. A type of ice-salt mixture.‎ 34. What does “glyco-” in the underlined word “glycoprotein” mean?‎ A. Ice. B. Blood.‎ C. Sugar. D. Molecule.‎ 35. What is the best title of this passage?‎ A. Discovery of the AFGP.‎ C. Protection of the Antarctic cod.‎ B. The ice shelf around Antarctica. ‎ D. A special fish living in Antarctica.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Learning English can be a difficult task. While many people learn English in the classroom, the vast majority of English learning takes place outside of it. ‎ ‎  36 , it is important to know how it is used in everyday life. So do not look up every word you don’t know as you read. It will only slow things down and make the reading process much less fun. Instead, rely on what you have already known. When you come across a difficult word or phrase, use context clues to guess at its meaning. Write down or underline any words or phrases you cannot figure out. The park was full of fresh and beauty flowers. When I was enjoying the wonderful scenery around, something unpleasant catch my eye. A young couple on the grass was eating, talking and laughing loudly even if they were the only people in the world. What’s worse, they spat and even threw rubbish onto the grass, ignoring the sign “No littering” nearby. What a shame! So behavior left me deep in thought. If all visitors to the wetland park do as the young couples did, the park will be severely polluting and soon turned into a huge dustbin. I think both of us should mind our behavior in the public places. Only in this way can we live more comfortable and beautiful surroundings.‎ ‎ ‎ 第二节 书面表达(满分25分)‎ 假定你是李华,你的外教Chris很喜欢中国文化,特别是地方民俗文化。 Ode to Orchids Dear Chris, I have some good news for you! ________________________________________‎ ‎____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________‎ Sincerely yours, Li Hua 三明一中2017-2018学年高二下学期开学考试卷 英 语 试 题 参 考 答 案 第Ⅰ卷(选择题 共100分)‎ 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) ‎ ‎1-5: BAABA ‎6-10: BBCCA ‎11-15: BACCC ‎16-20: BABCC 第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)‎ 第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)‎ ‎21-23: DAB ‎24-27: CABA ‎28-31: ABDD ‎32-35: BCCD 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) . 36-40: BGAFD 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节, 满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20 小题,每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ ‎41- 45: DCCBA ‎46-50: DDCBA ‎51-55: BAACD ‎56-60: CBDAB 第II 卷(非选择题 共50分)‎ 第二节 语篇填空(共10小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)‎ ‎61. sending ‎62. lost ‎63. disabled ‎64. He’ll start by reading the instructions for hours. Let’s stick with Jerry. It’ll get done faster.‎ M: But it’ll be cheaper if Tom fixes it. I can pay him with a few cans of beer.‎ W: Please, Greg! Just get Jerry’s number. He does this kind of thing for a living. (15) (16)‎ M: OK, I’ll call him. (16)‎ Text 10‎ Heather learned how to surf from her father. (17) It was just like riding a motorcycle…except that you were in the water! At first, she was scared. But by the end of her first day, she could already stand up on her board, and she told everyone that night that she would be a great surfer. ‎ Half a year later, she bought her own board from a website. (18) Almost every weekend morning, she drove from her house in Los Angeles to San Diego and hit the beach. Heather went surfing every minute she was free. But one afternoon, she noticed a big shark coming near her. (19) It was getting closer and closer to her. The next thing she knew, it was coming straight at her. She tried to swim out of its way, but it came at her again. Heather knew she had only one advantage: her surfboard. She threw it as hard as she could in the direction of the shark. Amazingly, it hit the shark in the nose, and it left her alone! Heather smiled. Surfing had saved her life! (20)‎
