Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.‎ Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily.‎ Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they treat us warmly, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires much time. But in China we are usually generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly cannot manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.‎ For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!‎ ‎21. The writer of this passage must be ______.‎ A. an American B. a Chinese C. a professor D. a student ‎ ‎22. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ‎ A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.‎ B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives ‎ C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy. ‎ D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.‎ ‎23. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______. ‎ A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home C. treated hospitably at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant ‎24. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.‎ A. Friendships between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans C. Americans’ hospitality D. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships B Like people from most countries, the people of the British islands speak kinds of dialects. A dialect is a different version (版本) of a main language. It has different words and has something to do with the culture of the place in which it is spoken. It is usually spoken with a certain accent. Although it may be different, however, a dialect is usually not so different that an outsider can’t understand what is being said. ‎ Speakers of dialects in Britain are often proud of them. For this reason, when you visit an area with a dialect, particularly when it is a place visited by tourists, gift stores will sell books about the local words. The dialects of Northern Ireland have a great many words that other Britons have never heard of. An unusual example I recently learned from this part of the world is “boke”, which means “vomit (呕吐)”. The nearly poetic words of the Cockneys (伦敦东区的人) of the East End of London are famous throughout the world because they can be so clever and humorous. Here is a piece of rhyming slang (押韵俚语): A “whistle and flute” is cockney for “suit”. ‎ It is true that there are fewer dialects in Britain today than there were a hundred years ago, and far fewer than there were 200 years ago. The reason is quite clear: The modern world and its opportunities for communication have made the differences between people much smaller. When people speak and listen to more people from a much larger area than their mothers and fathers did, the differences between the ways they speak get smaller. ‎ This means that there are now far fewer problems in understanding each other when British people, say, from the other Hebrides of Scotland speak with people from Cornwall in the southwest of the country. Also, English speakers from all over the world can generally understand each other. Of course, if dialects had not become less important, it would have been much more difficult for English as a second language to be such a big success all over the world! ‎ ‎25. How are dialects in Britain changing according to the text?‎ A. The number of dialects is getting smaller. ‎ B. There won’t be any dialects in the near future. ‎ C. There are fewer dialects in Northern Ireland than in other parts. ‎ D. There were more dialects 100 years ago than there were 200 years ago. ‎ ‎26. What is a result of the change in dialects spoken in Britain?‎ A. It has caused people more problems in understanding each other. ‎ B. It has made the British culture much less attractive. ‎ C. It has played its part in helping English become a world language. ‎ D. It has created more opportunities for communication. ‎ ‎27. What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. Dialect speakers in Britain B. Dialects in ‎Britain C. The effect of British dialects D. The future of British dialects ‎ C A university in southwest China's Chongqing City set up a reading room as part of a campaign(活动)that stops students from taking their mobile phones with them in case the device distracts(使分心)them from focusing on their studies.‎ Reportedly a student named Hu Xiaopeng taking part in the campaign studied 530 minutes without using his mobile phone. Unlike Hu, another one picked up his mobile phone in less than 20 minutes. “Having seen many students use their mobile phones in the library, a habit that shortens their study time and negatively affects their learning, we decided to open this reading room,” said Zhang Shuran, the person responsible for the project at the university.‎ Zhang added that students can keep their phones in appointed bags with numbers on them. The hags are placed on a desk near the door of the reading room. "Staff members at the reading room will check the phones when there's a call," said Zhang, adding that they will inform students when their parents or teachers call them, but will not tell students if an unknown person is calling or when there is a text message. Based on the time students hand in their phones when they come to the reading room and the time they get them back when they leave the room, Hu Xiaopeng from College‎ of ‎Animal Science and Technology of the university set a record of the longest time. Hu spent 530 minutes studying without using his phone. Though feeling somewhat surprised, Hu said," It's bad to keep mobile phone with you when you are reading or studying."‎ The campaign has attracted nearly 200 students since it was started a week ago. Some Internet users praised the campaign. One user named Liu Jingchang said, "It's good. I don’t bring my phone when going to the library in case I get distracted."‎ ‎28. Why is the reading room opened in Chongqing‎ ‎City?‎ A. To prevent students using mobile phones in the library.‎ B. To help students focus on their studies.‎ C. To prevent the mobile phones from being stolen.‎ D. To encourage students to read more books.‎ ‎29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?‎ A. The bags are on the desk near the students.‎ B. The student will be informed if a stranger calls him.‎ C. The time when the mobile phones are put in the bags is recorded.‎ D. Hu Xiaopeng thinks the campaign is a bad idea.‎ ‎30. What is the attitude of the students toward the reading room?‎ A. Careful. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Anxious. ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ In many countries of the world people do what is called house sitting. It means that if owners of the house are going away, they want someone to come into their home and look after the house and ‎ maybe pets while they are away. ‎ In Australia, many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van and travel all over the country. 31 ‎ So if someone wants to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in their home to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House sitters might have to care for pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yard and they need cleaning. 32 I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because you go and stay in a new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.‎ ‎ 33 There are websites where you find the advertisements by people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisement, you can make arrangements to go and look after their home. ‎ There are some requirements to be a house sitter. Now I’m writing to give you some advice on how to learn English well in high school.‎ First of all, you should listen to the teacher carefully and take notes in class so that you can go over your lessons as soon as you can after class. As is known to all, vocabulary is of great importance. You should spend half an hour in the morning reciting words and reading texts aloud. What’s more, try to communicate with your classmates in English out of class. Only in this way can you improve your listening and spoken English quickly. Last but not least, you should develop the habit of keeping a diary, which helps you go over the words and expressions that you have learnt. ‎ I hope these suggestions will be useful to you. Remember where there is a will, there is a way. ‎ Best wishes! ‎ Yours sincerely, ‎ Li Hua ‎
