Before my daughter, Evelyn, was born, 1 eagerly expected her first year of life. I imagined celebrating every milestone — bonding with her as a newborn, seeing her smile for the first time, hearing her say her first word. I didn’t think of feeding tubes, long hospital stays or an organ transplant (移植).For Evelyn, the first year included all and more.
Evelyn came into this world at just 34 weeks, weighing less than 3 pounds. Genetic testing revealed she had Alagille syndrome,a genetic disorder that can damage the liver(肝脏),heart and other organs. Soon, we received the news that baby Evelyn needed a liver transplant. Our family moved nearer to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh so that we were closer if a liver was available for Evelyn.
When Evelyn was added to the organ donation wait list, it was under the liver allocation policy in place at that time, which was map-based. This policy lacks any special consideration for transplant candidates. We were told it would likely take three months. Just then, a new policy for liver allocation was tried out. Under the new system, the sickest child patients get first priority(优先). The new policy was only in effect for a little over a week. But in that period, Evelyn received her liver transplant. Had it been just one week earlier or later, we would not have received the call.
As Evelyn recovers from her transplant, we are grateful for the change. I am also sad, because the new policy was short-lived. That means another mom like me might not receive that phone call with good news.
Other children should have the same opportunity as Evelyn to live healthy, happy lives. When it comes to liver transplant policy, we can and must do better for children.
24. What probably happened to Evelyn shortly after she was born?
A. She failed to give a smile. B. She suffered from a heart attack.
C. She said her first word quickly. D. She had a serious liver failure.
25. Why did the author’s family move nearer to the hospital?
A. To save time. B. To save money.
C. To see a doctor. D. To get first priority.
26. What does the author mean by the underlined sentence?
A. Evelyn is healthy now. B. They waited too long.
C. Her daughter is fortunate. D. They were one week earlier.
27. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?
A. We must guarantee kids have healthy livers.
B. The sickest kids should get liver transplants first.
C.Kids should have chances of a liver transplant.
D. The old policy lacks special consideration for kids.

I've had many wonderful holidays, but my favorite memory is that of a few summer weeks spent in Italy when I was about 13.My mom had to go to a clinic there for treatment, and we all went together as a family and took the opportunity to have a beautiful vacation as well. It was the first time abroad for me and it was a vacation that broadened my perspective, taught me a lot, and helped shape a bit of who I am today.
Although we did visit many famous places in northern Italy, we stayed mostly in a little town where some friends of my parents lived. Nothing helped me understand Italian culture better than my stay in this picturesque, almost magical town that many haven't even heard of.
Thanks to the holiday spent in Italy, I, quite a shallow girl, also discovered my passion for music, which stayed alive in me to this day and will probably stay forever. My parents' friends had a son, Ricardo, who was a pianist. Dad had repeatedly but unsuccessfully tried to make me study an instrument and stick to it. However, when I heard Ricardo play, I instantly fell in love with music and felt a great desire to learn it. Ricardo taught me the first song I ever played on the piano, a silly, playful little tune that I still know by heart.
We took a short trip to the Italian Alps at some point. I had never seen such majestic beauty before! The snow & shy; covered peaks, the intimidating rocks, the fresh, harsh air — what an
experience! And what I remember impressed me the most was the fact that, although this was a popular touristic area, the region was incredibly clean, still “natural”, with places that seemed to never have been touched by humans. Then, the shallow teen that I was learned what a real treasure nature is and how important it is to protect it.
28.What was the main purpose for the author and her family to go to Italy?
A. To experience and learn from another culture.
B. To have a family reunion while travelling.
C. To broaden and shape the author's perspective.
D. To cure the author's mother of her illness.
29.What contributed to the author's passion for music?
A. Her father's instructions. B. Ricardo's performance.
C. The piano she played on. D. The local music culture.
30.The trip to the Italian Alps helped the author learn to ________.
A. stick to her own passion B. balance between cultures
C.cherish and protect nature D. get rid of her shallowness
31.What would be the best title of the text?
A.A Trip Shaping My Personality B. My Favorite Holiday Memory
C. Lessons from a Foreign Culture D. My Passion for Music and Nature
D
People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have life spans(寿命)that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago, US has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors(肿瘤)developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improved the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors
“An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution of large body sizes in many animals ,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living
cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous(癌变的), large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox(悖论)”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancers spreading or even developing in the first place.
“Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, University of Utah, US. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.”
32.Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer?
A. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D. They have a rather large body size.
33.According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals?
A. Cells killing themselves. B. The huge body mass.
C. Deadly tumors. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage.
34.What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A. Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B. The larger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D. The risk of cancer is not related to body size.
35.What can be concluded from the passage?
A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes are used to cure cancer patients.

It’s not always easy to run an energy-efficient house. But there are some simple things anyone can do.
Go LED with your lighting.
There are several benefits to switching to energy-efficient light bulbs. One of them is saving money — though the LED bulbs might cost more than traditional bulbs, the average saving on LED bulbs is $ 75 a year. 36 LED bulbs can last years or even decades.
Don’t run your air conditioner constantly
As the weather starts to warm, you might be thinking about the right time to turn on your air conditioner. 37 Air conditioner units are among the most energy-consuming appliances in your home. Using electrical fans instead of your air conditioner is much more efficient and it’s a big money saver, too.
38
On those days when you treat a large crowd and are low on time, don’t heat yourself up if you have to use disposable (一次性的)dish ware. This method reduces your water usage and saves energy. And as a bonus, if your city offers roadside recycling, your paper plates may qualify.
Update your insulation(隔热)
All that work you’re doing to save energy in your home could go to waste if it’s not properly insulated. If you can’t insulate the whole house, pay special attention to the roof:it reduces air flow from outside. By updating your insulation, you’re saving money. 39
Take showers instead of baths
A full bathtub requires about 70 gallons of water. 40 Showers are quite different — taking a five-minute shower uses only 10 to 25 gallons!
A. But do you really have to?
B. You should use your air conditioner smartly.
C. Turn off water when not using it.
D. Plus,you needn’t change them frequently.
E. Don’t feel guilty about using paper plates.
F. And it’s also easier to control your home temperature.
G. Even if you don’t fill it to the top, it still uses much more water.

二、作文续写(20分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate(幸运的) than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three- year-old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.”
I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate(捐赠) some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed.
Meghan walked up with Lucy, her much-loved doll, hugged tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh, Honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to our wildlife park. Wild animals are our friends, without whom we can’t live on the earth alone. Therefore, to protect our friends and guarantee your safety, please do as follows:
Firstly, never get close to the animals, especially dangerous ones like tigers, lions and elephants. Not only are you forbidden to throw anything at the animals or feed them, but also you aren’t allowed to take photos with them in case you will be attacked. Meanwhile, you’d better not play games with animals trained by non-professionals. Finally, no littering signs can be seen around the park, so please obey them.
I wish you have a good time here.
【写作指导】
one possible version
The boys had watched, open-mouthed, when their sister placed her favorite doll in the box. Without a word, the boys rose and went to their rooms and came back carrying their favorite toys to the living room. Astonished, I realized that the boys had also recognized what little Meghan’s action meant. I think all of them want to make these poor people who have nothing happy like them. Swallowing back tears, I pulled all three of them into my arms.
I looked my children for a long moment. I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes, too. I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the
young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. What Meghan did taught me a lesson that the true spirit of donating is to give with your heart.

M: Well, my brother is on vacation now. He always wants to come and visit the city.
W: What about your sister?
M: She has a part-time job at the university.
W: And do you have anything special to do?
M: Nothing special. I work as a waiter in the morning. And in the afternoon, I read books bought from a bookstore days ago. What about you, June? Are you in school this summer?
W: Yes, I am.
M: Oh, are you taking French and Spanish again?
W: Well, I’m not taking them, but I’m starting Japanese.
M: Really? That’s exciting.

M: My history professor says I should think about a job in politics. But I don’t think I’d make a good politician.
W: Why not?
M: You know me. I’m not good at dealing with people. And politicians have to work with people all the time.
W: That’s true. So what do you think you want to do?
M: I think I will be a good artist. I love painting pictures.
W: That reminds me of a problem I’m having. You know my parents have a restaurant, right? They want me to be the manager.
M: And you want to?
W: No way. A restaurant manager has to manage other people. It’d be terrible. I’m too disorganized. Honestly, I want to be a teacher because I like working with kids, and I’m good at it.
M: That’s true.

W: Good morning, everyone. Today we’re going to look at the wide differences in family life between the rich and the poor in Victorian times. Let’s begin with the upper classes. In Victorian times, the upper classes made up less than 3% of the population, yet held more than
90% of the country’s wealth. Most of their servants were very poorly paid, but were always living in the homes of upper-class Victorian families, so they didn’t have to pay for housing, food and clothing. The money which they did earn, they sent to their families. Many servants came from the countryside. Among them were cooks, cleaners, gardeners and so on. The family would also employ a child’s nurse whose main role was to care for the children. She was responsible for teaching the children how to behave and taking care of them when they were ill. Nurses did not, however, educate the children. Generally, children from wealthy families didn’t attend school outside the family home. Tutors would come to the house to do this. Now, the Victorian upper classes have the reputation of being quite cruel; but this wasn’t always the case. They were also quite generous. Some schools were set up with money from the upper classes so that poor children could have some form of education. Additionally, most Victorian parents were very proud of their children. This goes against the common idea that parents were very strict with their children. In fact, the opposite was generally the rule. However, the situation for lower class families was very different. Let’s have a look.
