It was my first day back home since starting college. In the city, I was living on my own, had a part-time job and was studying. Even the government recognized I was an adult: I had a driver’s license. So here I was, on my summer vacation, walking down the main street with my father, desperate for him to acknowledge how mature I was. When his recognition failed to appear, I took matters into my own hands. “Dad,” I said actually, “I’m thirsty. Let’s go for a beer.” It was the first time I’d ever mentioned beer in front of my father, let alone ask him to drink one with me.
He turned to me with a curious expression. “A beer? Well, I guess you’re old enough now. Let’s go to Sailors’ Bar. It’s where my cousin Tom, your uncle, used to drink.”
I had only some vague recollection of my uncle. He was the black sheep of the family. We didn’t talk him much. “What ever happened to Uncle Tom, Dad? I haven’t seen him for years.”
“Neither have I, unfortunately. He was a good kid once. But things changed,” my father said mournfully. As a boy, he explained, there had been no better-behaved boy than Tom. But after leaving school, he started drinking in nightclubs and playing cards. Soon he lost everything and had to beg his mum to pay his debts.
My Dad took a deep breath and continued his tale. “Things settled down for a while. But it didn’t last. He was soon back to his old ways. He was at Sailors’ Bar almost every night. His poor mother died of grief and shame. His wife followed her soon after.”
“What ruined him was alcohol. Tom warned me, ‘Be cautious about your first drink!’ Last year Tom sent me a letter saying he had been found guilty of stealing, and sent to prison for ten years.”
Dad finished talking just as we reached the front door of Sailors’ Bar. But I put my arm around my father and said, “I’m not thirsty any more, Dad. Let’s go home.”
24. Why did the young man invite his father to drink a beer?
A. Because he was thirsty while walking with his father.
B. Because he wanted to impress his father casually.
C. Because he wanted to show he was an adult.
D. Because he wanted to discuss his Uncle Tom.
25. What does the young man mean by saying “He was the black sheep of the family”?
A. The family was concerned about Tom for his troublesome character.
B. The family felt ashamed of Tom because he was a failure.
C. The family showed sympathy to Tom because he was unfortunate.
D. The family felt disgusted with Tom because he was different.
26. What was the main source of Uncle Tom’s problems?
A. His overly-strict family. B. His addiction to card games.
C. The deaths of his mother and wife. D. His inability to control his drinking.
27. In the story the father told his son about Tom in order to ________.
A. warn him to keep away from Tom B. entertain him while they walked to the bar
C. recall an interesting period in the father’s life D. convince him of the harm caused by drinking

Texting while walking is something that most of us are guilty of. We can’t help replying to that message we just received. However, while it’s fun to keep up with the latest gossip, we may actually be putting ourselves in danger.
A team of researchers from two UK universities have recently found that people who use their phones while on the move walk differently than usual.
“Recently, a person in front of me was walking very slowly and weaving(迂回行进), and I thought, ‘Is this person drunk?’” Matthew Timmis, co-author of the study, told The Guardian.
It turned out that the person was just texting. Inspired by this, Timmis and his team set out to discover the effects of phone use on how we navigate streets.
A group of 21 volunteers were asked to walk around a simulated(模拟的)street, complete with obstacles such as a step. The participants traveled the course a total of 12 times each, either writing or reading a message, making a call, or with no phone at all.
It took the volunteers 118 percent longer to complete the course when using a phone. They also focused on the step obstacle 60 percent more and paid attention to the travel path 51 percent more when they weren’t using a phone.
Although there were no accidents, Timmis believes we should still be aware of what’s going on around us.
“The big risk here is suddenly-appearing hazards(危险), like a pedestrian(行人)suddenly walking in front of you,” he told The Guardian. “You are not going to be able to respond to that as efficiently, which increases the risk of injury.”
To bring attention to dangers of “text walking”, a temporary “texting lane” was set up in Antwerp, Belgium in 2015. And earlier in 2017, a special crosswalk featuring flashing red lights on the ground to get the attention of texters was set up in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
“Texting while walking can lead to collisions with poles or other pedestrians. You could even be endangering your own life when you cross the street without looking up,” a spokesperson for the company that made the Antwerp texting lane told Yahoo News.
28. What did the UK researchers recently discover about text walking?
A. It’s a common problem all around the world.
B. People walk in a different way when texting.
C. People are risking their lives while text walking.
D. It has caused more traffic accidents.
29. How much longer did it take the volunteers to complete the course in Timmis’ experiment when using a phone?
A. 12 percent. B. 118 percent. C. 60 percent. D. 51 percent.
30. The underlined word “navigate” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “_________”.
A. go up B. go away C. go across D. go by
31. What was the purpose of setting up the “texting lane” in Belgium?
A. To provide a safe lane for text walking.
B. To attract more people to walk in the lane.
C. To give an example of a modern lane.
D. To warn people of the dangers of text walking.
D
Driverless technology will soon enter another major global industry: shipping. Several
companies recently announced plans to launch self-sailing ships to improve safety and efficiency.
One of them is Norwegian chemical company Yara International. Yara has teamed up with another Norwegian company, Kongsberg, to build an autonomous goods ship expected to launch in 2018. Kongsberg developed the ship’s electrical technology and autonomous control systems. The ship is fully electric to reduce air pollution. It is designed to carry goods containers normally transported by truck. This means the ship will also improve road safety by replacing about 40,000 truck trips a year. The company plans to operate the ships by far-away control beginning sometime in 2018. By 2020, the ships should be loading and sailing themselves. While Yara’s ships will be limited to Norway at first, the company plans to greatly expand its autonomous shipping operations in the coming years.
Another company putting a high priority(优先)to self-sailing ships is the world’s largest mining company, Australia’s BHP Billiton. The company’s Vice President of Freight, Rashpal Bhatti, recently spoke about the technology in a website post. Bhatti believes automation(自动化)will be one of the biggest changes for shipping in the future. He said, “Autonomous ships offer significant opportunities to improve safety and provide better effectiveness results to the supply chain of the sea.” He added that self-sailing ships could become a reality within the next decade.
Rolls-Royce, the British automobile and engine manufacturer, is also developing unmanned shipping technologies. Oskar Levander is the company’s head of operations at sea. He told a conference, “This is happening. It’s not if, it’s when.”
Levander said these autonomous ships could be controlled by far-away operators from anywhere. He added, “Because these ships will be designed to be unmanned, they can be built smaller, more efficient and environmentally friendly.”
32. Why have several countries announced plans to produce self-sailing ships?
A. To save money. B. To develop electrical technology in ships.
C. To compete in autonomous control systems. D. To make shipping more effective and less risky.
33. How will the Norwegian autonomous ship be developed?
A. On the basis of Rolls-Royce. B. By a single company independently.
C. By two native companies working together. D. By taking electrical technology from Australia.
34. What do Oskar Levander’s words suggest in Paragraph 4 ?
A. It is too early to make autonomous ships.
B. The supply chain of the sea will be busier.
C. People are more concerned about autonomous ships.
D. Unmanned shipping technologies are becoming more mature.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Automation under Sail B. Self-sailing Ships in Use
C. Automation in Some Fields D. Automation in Imagination
You may have grown up living with sisters and brothers, or this may be your first time to share your living space with someone else. 36 However, it can also be a great part of your college experience. Follow these tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the years.
Be clear from the beginning.
Maybe you hate it when someone interrupts you when you are sleeping every morning. Maybe you need ten minutes to yourself before talking to anyone after you wake up. 37 It’s not fair to expect him or her to pick up on them right away, and communicating what you need is one of the best ways to get rid of problems before they become problems.
38
This may seem simple, but it’s probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience conflicts. Don’t you think he’ll mind if you borrow his shoes for a quick soccer game? For all you know, you just stepped over the line. Don’t borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first.
Be open to change.
You should expect to learn, grow and change during your time at school. 39 As the term progresses, you should realize things will change for both of you. Be comfortable addressing
things that unexpectedly come up, setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing environment.
Follow the golden rule.
40 No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect.
A. Respect your roommate’s things.
B. Let your roommate know about your preferences.
C. Treat your roommate like you’d like to be treated.
D. Living with a roommate is really a wonderful thing.
E. Having a roommate surely has its challenges.
F. You should correct your bad habits first.
G. And the same should happen to your roommate, if all goes well.

be inspired to do sth.“被鼓舞做某事”。
make the best of“充分利用”。
1. 第一句:learn—learned/learnt 考查时态。
be used to中“to”为介词,后需用动名词作宾语。
主语为we可知需将their改为our。

Dear Henry,
Knowing that you show great interest in classical Chinese literature, I am delighted to recommend to you an online reading activity organized by EnjoyReading.
The participants are required to set aside at least half an hour every day to read the selected classic works online 100 days continuously. Those who have fulfilled the task will be rewarded with some books free of charge.
In my view, this reading activity suits you fine. To begin with, readers will get access to a wide range of excellent works. Besides, challenging as it may be, it helps the readers form a good reading habit. I hope you will give it a thought.
Yours,
Li Hua
