After a few steps, I turned and asked him whether he needed help. He told me his house was one station further and he would only need to take the train there. So I reached for his hand to help him stand up.‎ He wanted to take the stairs but I feared that he would hurt himself since he seemed too weak to walk, so I asked him to take the elevator. Even though my mind was trying to turn the danger lights on, I put the thought that I should not go alone with a drunken man out of my mind and accompanied him on the elevator.‎ We arrived on the platform with no incidents. The man’s knees seemed to soften, so I asked him to rest on a bench. While sitting there, he thanked me, telling me that I saved him. No, I said, I really did nothing; he saved himself as he walked on his own feet.‎ At the next station, we said our goodbyes. Before I knew it, he left 100 dollars and dashed out of the train. There was no way to give him back his money. I wanted to leave it on the seat, but a young woman who thought it belonged to me ran after me and gave me the note.‎ My initial reaction to getting that money was of shame and I even felt offended. Then I thought ‎ he just wanted to thank me, the best way he knew how. But in fact, humans blink about 15 times per minute on average. Have you ever missed anything because you blinked? Probably not. Why is that?‎ According to a new study published in the journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to skip the temporary darkness when we blink. It can keep visual information for a short ‎ period of time and then put it together to form an image without interruption.‎ In order to understand how this works, a group of scientists at the German Primate Center and the University Medical Center Go..ttingen in Germany conducted an experiment. In the study, the participants were asked to look at patterns on a screen whose direction could be interpreted in different ways, such as horizontally(水平地) or vertically(垂直地). When one pattern was about to disappear and the next one was about to come, the participants had to indicate the direction that the next pattern would appear.‎ The researchers found that when the directions of two patterns didn’t match, the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction.‎ ‎“The medial prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮层) adjusts current visual information with previously obtained information, and thus enables us to perceive the world with more stability, even when we briefly close our eyes to blink,” Caspar Schwiedrzik explained in Science Daily. He is the first author of the study and also a scientist at the German Primate Center.‎ ‎8.We don’t miss anything when blinking because our brain can ________.‎ A.deal with the missing image B.remember all that we see C.imagine what our eyes miss D.put our pieces of memory together ‎9.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?‎ A.Our brain.‎ B.Visual information.‎ C.Current Biology.‎ D.The temporary darkness.‎ ‎10.What do we know about the experiment?‎ A.The two patterns appear at the same time.‎ B.Visual memory can be more activated by similarity.‎ C.Participants can interpret patterns differently.‎ D.The different directions activated visual memory.‎ ‎11.What would be the best title for this passage?‎ A.The Brain’s Structure B.The Brain’s Activated Patterns C.The Brain’s Special Skill D.The Brain’s Orientation D Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track.‎ But while it’s long been believed that endorphins(内啡肽)—chemicals in the body that cause happiness—are behind the socalled “runner’s high”, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew.‎ According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids(内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.‎ To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice.‎ Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety.‎ But after being given a drug to block their endorphins they changed. However, when their endocannabinoids were block with a different drug, the runner’s high symptoms seemed to fade.‎ ‎“The longheld notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner’s high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on a science blog.‎ Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety.‎ The UK’s National Health Service even prescribes(开药方) exercise for patients who are suffering from depression.‎ ‎“Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate(中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website.‎ It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we’re feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.‎ ‎12.What did scientists from German universities recently discover?‎ A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.‎ B.The runner’s high could be caused by endocannabinoids.‎ C.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.‎ D.The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one’s mood.‎ ‎13.The scientists gave mice drugs in their experiment to ________. ‎ A.find what reduces the runner’s high symptoms B.see the specific symptoms of the runner’s high C.identify what is responsible for the runner’s high D.test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released ‎14.The underlined word “notion” in Paragraph 7 has the closest meaning to “________”.‎ A.effect B.goal C.question D.belief ‎15.According to the UK’s National Health Service, regular workouts ________.‎ A.are the best way to treat depression B.can help ease depression symptoms C.only work for those with serious depression D.can help people completely recover from depression 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ What’s the purpose of building patience abilities? In a word, happiness. Better relationships, more success. But indeed it takes efforts to build them successfully. 16.________ Thus, when the big ones come, we will have developed the patience we need for hard times.‎ Understand the addictive nature of anger and impatience. We, human beings, are still ‎ constructed with our old reptilian(爬行动物的) brain that protects our physical and emotional survival. On the emotional survival side, we want our way to get ahead, to achieve, and to “look good”. Let’s just face it. 17.________ So the first step in growing patience is to get in touch with the addictive quality of the opposite of patience—anger, impatience, blame and shame. We all have them. And we can grow beyond them.‎ Upgrade our attitude towards discomfort and pain. Pain has its purposes and pushes us to find solutions—we try to change the other person, situation or thing that we think is causing our discomfort. But the problem is that it is not the outside thing that’s the source of our pain, but how our mind is set. 18.________‎ Pay attention when the impatience or pain starts. Most of us don’t really realize it when we are feeling even the smallest—but very present—painful feelings. 19.________ But to really care for ourselves, get curious about what’s actually happening in the moment inside you. Focusing on what’s actually happening, you can notice the worry of not wanting what’s happening, the resistance.‎ ‎20.________ When you find yourself impatient, or angry with yourself, you can remind yourself that you are growing, and that, “Sure, this is understandable; this is what happens to me when I’m bothered.” You can say to yourself, “It’s true. I don’t like this; this is uncomfortable, but I can tolerate it.”‎ A.Practice positive selftalk.‎ B.So the solution to pain is an inside job.‎ C.Patience abilities benefit you in many ways.‎ D.Learn to forgive yourself for being impatient in hard times.‎ E.We ignore the fact that we’re in pain and focus completely on fixing the problem.‎ F.The urge to protect ourselves and what we consider valuable is absolutely habitforming.‎ G.Effective ways are recommended to train ourselves to work with little pain and annoyance.‎ 第二部分 语言知识运用(共两节, 满分45分)‎ 第一节(共20小题; 每小题1.5分, 满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文, 从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中, 选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Very few of us become fluent in another language by studying it in high school. For one thing, I have such a good command of English that I can communicate freely with the participants in English. Additionally, I’m a crazy fan of sports, which enables me to share something in common with the participants so that I will get along well with them. As an outgoing and helpful girl, I’m always willing to give a helping hand to those in need. Having participated in several similar activities before, I know well what to expect in the event and how to handle emergencies. I am sure that I’ll be qualified enough to live up to your expectations. I would appreciate it if you could give me a chance.‎ Looking forward to your reply.‎ Yours_truly,‎ Li_Hua
