Their supervisor told NBC News early Wednesday.‎ Russian officials had feared the siege(封锁) could last for another month, the time it would take to reach the islands in the Kara Sea, high in the Arctic Circle. But on Tuesday night a research ship took a detour (绕道) to assist those weathermen, station supervisor Vasily Shevchenko told NBC News. The ship run by Russia’s state-run oil firm Rosneft frightened away the bears using its helicopter, before resupplying the weather station with more food and puppies . The puppies are not yet bigenough to deter the bears, but the station is planning to draft in a replacement adult guard dog as soon as possible.‎ Some of the bears had taken to sleeping directly outside the windows of remote outpost. There was no risk of the researchers starving because they had a year’s worth of food, but they were forced to take dangerous trips to a nearby building, holding a gun for protection, according to Shevchenko.‎ Polar bears are an endangered species. In Russia, it’s a crime to shoot them unless in self-defense. The bears usually leave the islands in the summer, but this time they were trapped by the melting ice, an apparent sign of climate change, according to Shevchenko. “They’ve stayed on the island because there is nowhere for them to go,” he said.‎ The animals suffer from global warming because it shrinks the floating ice that forms their main hunting ground. According to the environmental group the World Wide Fund for Nature, known as the WWF, this has got some polar bears to go near human habitats in search of food.‎ ‎24. What did the research ship do to help the five meteorologists?‎ A. Drive them home.‎ B. Shoot all the bears.‎ C. Supply the weather station with more money.‎ D. Use its helicopter to scare the bears away.‎ ‎25. The underlined Word “deter” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to “______”.‎ A. protect B. respect C. stop D. raise ‎26. What made the bears trapped on the island according to the text?‎ A. Sea Pollution. B. Climate change.‎ C. Humans’ hunting. D. Animals’ hunting ‎27. What can we infer from the text?‎ A. People in Russia can hunt bear for money.‎ B. The melting ice will kill all the polar bears.‎ C. WWF made some contributions to protecting polar bears.‎ D. The five meteorologists hated the bears very much.‎ C It hurts to keep secrets. Keeping something secret is associated with lower well-being, worse health, and less satisfying relationships. Research has linked secret-keeping to increased anxiety, depression, symptoms of poor health, and even the more rapid progression of disease. There is a seemingly obvious explanation for these harms: Hiding secrets is hard work.‎ New research, however, suggests that the harm of secrets doesn’t really come from the hiding after all. The real problem with keeping a secret is not that you have to hide it, but that you have to live with it, and think about it.‎ The concept of secrecy might evoke(唤起) an image of two people in conversation, with one person actively hiding from the other. Yet, such hiding is actually uncommon. It is our tendency to mind-wander to our secrets that seems most harmful to well-being. Simply thinking about a secret can make us feel unreal. Having a secret return to mind, time and time again, can be tiring. When we think of a secret, it can make us feel isolated and alone.‎ To better understand the harms of secrecy, my colleagues and I first set out to understand what secrets people keep, and how often they keep them. We found that 97 percent of people have at least one secret at any given moment, and people have, on average, 13 secrets. A survey of more than 5,000 people found that common secrets include preferences, desires, issues surrounding relationships, cheating and violations of others’ trust.‎ Across several studies, we asked participants to assess how frequently they hid their secret during conversations with others, and also how frequently they thought about the secret outside of social communications. We found that the more frequently people simply thought about their secrets, the lower their well-being. The frequency of active hiding when communicating with others, however, had no relationship to well-being.‎ Following up this research, a new paper shows why thinking about secrets is so harmful. Turning the question around, we examined the consequences of telling secrets. We found that when a person tells a secret to a third party, it does not reduce how often they have to hide the secret from others who are still kept in the dark. Rather, it reduces how often their mind wanders toward the secret in irrelevant moments.‎ ‎28. According to the passage, which of the following is really harmful?‎ A. Hiding the secrets from others.‎ B. Always keeping the secrets in mind.‎ C. Assessing the frequency of hiding secrets.‎ D. Telling a third party the secrets.‎ ‎29. How did the author do the research with his colleagues?‎ A. By doing experiments themselves.‎ B. By comparing the participants.‎ C. By analyzing some samples.‎ D. By analyzing the participants’ replies.‎ ‎30. In the passage, the author mainly intends to tell us         .‎ A. whether we should hide the secrets from others ‎ B. how we should keep the secrets properly C. what leads to our healthy problems D. why the secrets we keep are hurting us ‎31. What will probably be talked about in the next paragraph of the passage?‎ A. The proper ways that we can hide the secrets from others.‎ B. The main reasons why we should think more about the secrets.‎ C. The detailed reasons why telling a secret to a third person can make our mind healthier.‎ D. The correct ways that we can solve our healthy problems successfully in our daily life.‎ D Young trees don't just grow; they develop a personality and learn more about their environment and how they should best behave in it. They also help each other out whenever there's trouble.‎ Personality, just as among people, varies among trees. Some are anxious, some bold. On the author’s land, there are three oak trees growing close together. One of the oak trees always starts to shed its leaves two weeks earlier than the others. Since they all experience the same temperature, the same soil and the same length of day, such variables can't be the explanation. So what's happening? Well, this tree is simply more careful than the others. Whoever holds onto their leaves longer can do more photosynthesis(光合作用) and store more nutrients. However, the longer a tree keeps its leaves, the higher the risk of injury.‎ Not only do trees make their own decisions; they also learn from their mistakes. A tree, for example, keeping its leaves too long during one year will never make this mistake again. This leads to several other conclusions: trees must notice the temperature and the length of the day and be able to save their experiences somewhere. Obviously, trees don't have brains, but it is thought that in the sensitive tips of their roots they keep track of information and experiences.‎ But trees aren't only clever when it comes to caring for themselves. They also support each other whenever there’s trouble by giving warnings and even taking care of sick and weak conspecifics with nutrients. For example, one time the author found a very old tree stump. Its insides had rotted a long time ago to topsoil. But the wood on the outside of the stump was still living. How was this possible? Well, the stump was nourished by its neighbors with nutrients from the root system, and had been for at least 400 years!‎ Why do trees do such a thing? It's simple: it's better together. Trees need the forest; it protects them from storms, provides the right microclimate and warns them of attacks.‎ ‎32. Why does the author mention the three oak trees?‎ A. To illustrate trees can learn from experiences.‎ B. To show trees can make independent decisions.‎ C. To explain trees are quite supportive to each other.‎ D. To prove trees have the same personalities as humans.‎ ‎33. According to the text, which of the following best describes general features of trees?‎ A. Anxious and bold. B. Smart and adventurous.‎ C. Adaptable and supportive. D. Helpful and well-behaved.‎ ‎34. What does the underlined phrase "do such a thing" mean?‎ A. Give warnings. B. Offer assistance.‎ C. Depend on others. D. Provide nutrients.‎ ‎35. Where does this text most probably come from?‎ A. A science book. B. A public lecture.‎ C. An experiment report. D. A travel journal.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Most of us in China are used to paying for everything with our phones.    36    .At least, this was the case for Lim Swee Say from Singapore, who found his first experience with Chinese payment methods quite impressive. Lim was waiting in line to buy nuts at a street stall(货摊) in Shanghai and saw other customers show their phone and take the nuts without giving cash.    37    It seems that Singapore falls behind in mobile payments. Some Chinese tourists find it inconvenient when they have to use cash in Singapore.‎ ‎    38    According to Xinhua News Agency, many countries now accept mobile payment services for Chinese tourists, with WeChat Pay covered in 13 overseas countries and regions and Alipay over 200. It’s now common to see the familiar green or blue logos in tourist destinations around the world, from a tiny shop in the Scottish Highlands to a huge department store in New York.‎ Mobile payments are now a normal part of life in China, and the trend is sweeping other nations. According to Forrester Research, in America, mobile payments rose by 37 percent in 2016.    39    This may be partly because western mobile payment services require businesses to install expensive equipment before customers can use them.    40     ‎ A. While in China, all it takes is a QR code (二维码) and a phone.‎ B. The popularity of Chinese mobile payments has pushed some foreign companies to accept them.‎ C. But for foreign visitors who aren’t familiar with this method, it may seem strange.‎ D. Foreign tourists don’ t like to pay with their mobile phones.‎ E. He was trying to figure out how they got paid.‎ F. Soon after, he realized that the customers were using WeChat Pay.‎ G. Still, Chinese mobile payments were nearly 50 times greater than those in the US.‎ 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分) 第一节(共20小题:每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后面各题所给出的四个选项(A, B, C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上把该项涂黑。‎ Valentine’s Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Indeed, it could be of little  61  (convenient) for you to travel from one point to another if you don't own a ‎ car. While you can always use public transport, it can be quite unreliable sometimes. But don't worry. There are car rental companies that can help you with your traveling needs at anytime. If you are planning on a vacation during a major holiday like Christmas,  62  (consider) hiring a car for you and your family's use. The obvious   63  (benefit) of doing so are as follows:‎ Some rental companies even include a driver with every car rented. Imagine yourself with a driver taking you to your destination  64  waiting to drive you back home.
