Volunteering to help people in need combined with traveling to faraway places is a new trend in the travel industry. It is called voluntourism. People travel to other countries, learn languages and other cultures, and gain new experiences. On the other side, they volunteer to help others who are not as well off as they are.
Recent statistics show that in the past few years voluntourism has been one of the fastest-growing areas of tourism. More than 1. 6 million people around the world are volunteers in other countries. They work in orphanages (孤儿院) , help build schools, assist in hospitals and do farming work in developing countries. Some of them develop lasting bonds with people far away.
There are many reasons why people want to take part in voluntourism. Students see it as a period of time when they can take a break before going to university; others simply want to take time out from a job and do something else. Then there are those who are bored and merely seek adventure. However, many voluntourists do not see volunteering as what it is. They think it is a cheap way of traveling and don’t really want to get involved in hard work.
Not everyone sees voluntourism in a positive way. Critics say that if people really want to help those in need there are many opportunities in their own community to do this. On the other side, volunteers are often not skilled enough for the tasks they do.
Travel experts point out that in some cases voluntourists are taken advantage of by the organization that sets up the trips.
21. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The origin of voluntourism. B. The future of voluntourism.
C. The concept of voluntourism. D. The importance of voluntourism.
22. According to paragraph 3, which may inspire people to participate in voluntourism?
A. Making money. B. Avoiding adventure.
C. Applying for a scholarship. D. Seeking for a change.
23. What might be talked about after the last paragraph?
A. Cases where people help others in their own community.
B. Tips on choosing voluntourism organizations and projects.
C. Reasons why not all people adopt a positive attitude to voluntourism.
D. Problems caused by volunteers who lack necessary skills for their tasks.

At the age of twenty-two, I was employed by one of the largest commercial companies in the world, so my work mainly focused on advertising, working on production teams for hundreds of television commercials. I was fortunate to experience such an amazing career at such a young age, working all over the country with some of the most creative people in the world. I had it all.
And then one day a sudden thought came through me like a lightning bolt. “This is an industry that uses anorexic (厌食的)models to sell diet food to teenage girls.” My life changed.
And I quit.
A twelve-year career.
Right then.
That night I went home and was weak in my knees. I did not want to be part of the members causing this problem; I wanted to be part of the people who had solutions. But I had no idea what the solution looked like. My grandfather used to say, “Start with what you know, and more will be revealed”.
I knew the film, television and advertising industries and almost everything about them.
So I started going into junior high schools. I held up pictures of the models to show what they looked like at five o’clock in the morning, and then held up some pictures showing what they looked like after three hours of professional makeup, thirty-five lighting technicians, and professional photographers who can make anyone look beautiful and sexy...not to mention the efforts of post-production, where they airbrush nearly all of the imperfection parts right out of the picture. With digital technology, they can even stretch the models to make them appear taller and thinner.
I talked to young girls and said, “This is a multi-billion dollar industry that spends millions of dollars a year proving to you that there is something wrong with you so that they can sell you something to fix it. So I am here to tell you that your teeth are white enough... and your breath is fresh enough... and your thighs are thin enough. You are enough.”
You are enough, no matter what others say and what happens.
24. Why did the author quit working in the commercial company?
A. He was fed up with his work in advertising industry.
B. He realized his work was misleading teenage girls.
C. He found it hard to work with the team.
D. He decided to take up a career in education.
25. The author showed two sets of pictures of models to young girls to __________.
A. show the magic power of make-up skills
B. stress the great efforts models made in their work
C. advocate developing digital technology
D. expose the real truth behind the amazing beauty of models
26. What message does the writer mainly want to pass to teenage girls?
A. You might as well change your life when an opportunity arises.
B. You can’t be too cautious when facing life choices.
C. It is who you are rather than what you look like that counts.
D. It is worthwhile to experience something interesting and creative.
C
To most of us, medicine comes from a drugstore. But originally, much of the medicine developed in the last century came from natural sources: plants or bacteria. Now, a group of scientists in Great Britain are hoping to develop a medicine from poisonous insects. They are researching whether the deadly venom(毒液)of some insects can work against bacteria.
Venom tech laboratory
About 400 insects live in plastic containers in the Venomtech laboratory. Each container has an image of a skull and crossbones. The images warn that a bite from the insects inside can be anything from painful to deadly.
The venom from these insects contains hundreds of chemical components. Each component has a different target and effect. Medical researchers separate the venom into its component parts. Then they create a library of those components, looking for the ones that could be turned into new drugs.
“Some of them we found can kill bacteria, like E Coli, so they’re very relevant at the moment where modern medicines are failing. And we’re also finding venom that is changing and killing cancer cells.”
Finding new ways to kill bacteria is important to researchers. One reason is that people have used antibiotics (抗生素)so much that some bacteria can now resist it. For example, tuberculosis used to be curable with antibiotics. Now it is not.
How do they get the venom out? To get as much venom as possible, researchers feed the insects well and then put them to sleep temporarily. Steven Trim of Venomtech says researchers anaesthetize the insects to make removing the venom safer. After all, an immobile insect cannot bite. Researchers then electrically stimulate the insect to contract(收缩)the muscle and squeeze the gland(腺). The pressure produces a small amount of venom.
Researchers separate the venom into hundreds of proteins. Each protein contains between one and five different molecules (分子). Someday, those tiny molecules might be turned into powerful new drugs.
27. The skull and crossbones images in plastic containers are used to____________.
A. warn people B. comfort people
C. frighten people D. encourage people
28. What does the underlined word “anaesthetize” probably mean?
A. To kill something dangerous. B. To remove something harmful.
C. To protect something beneficial. D. To make something unconscious.
29. What can we learn from the research?
A. Tuberculosis is curable with antibiotics.
B. The venom from the insects can cure cancer diseases.
C. Some of the components from venom can kill bacteria.
D. The chemical components from venom can be turned into new drugs.
30. The researchers get venom from poisonous insects by ____________.
A. making them sleep for some time B. squeezing the gland containing antibiotics
C. separating the venom into proteins D. stimulating the insects to relax the muscle
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
In different countries around the world, people become “adults” at different ages. Being an adult means having the right to do certain things such as getting a part-time job, voting, getting married, or getting a license to drive. 31
In many countries, sixteen or eighteen is the age at which a person becomes an adult. 32 They no longer have to rely on their parents for money all the time. In many parts of North America,
sixteen is also the age when one can obtain a driver’s license; in England, it is seventeen. There are responsibilities that go along with both of these rights. 33 Driving a car demands that you follow certain rules and regulations such as getting and paying for insurance to drive.
Voting is another right that marks the passage into adulthood for many young people. In the United States, Canada and the UK, young people have the right to vote at the age of eighteen. 34 For young people to use their right to vote wisely, they must have an understanding of the needs of society, and they must also learn how politics works. 35 They think the people should be able to vote at the age of sixteen. They argue that if teenagers at sixteen are old enough to get part-time jobs, pay taxes, and drive, they are also enough to vote in elections.
Not everyone would agree that it is a good idea to give all of these rights---and the responsibilities that accompany them---to people when they are too young. The question is : How young is too young?
A. With this right also comes responsibility.
B. Getting a part-time job means that you have to pay income tax.
C. Adults should be allowed to enjoy the greatest amount of freedom.
D. It also means accepting the responsibilities that accompany these rights.
E. A group of teenagers in Canada want the Canadian voting laws to be changed.
F. People should be able to get a driver’s license at the age of sixteen or eighteen.
G. People at this age can get a part-time job and begin to receive an income of their own.

第二节:概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Are you sick of going to bed late and waking up tired? Then grab your hiking boots and a tent. A new study suggests that a couple days of camping in the great outdoors can reset your circadian ( 昼夜节律的)clock and help you get more sleep.
The circadian clock, more commonly known as the body clock, is an internal system that tells our bodies when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. Scientists track this clock by measuring the amount of melatonin(褪黑激素)circulating in a person’s blood at any given time. In a healthy sleeper, melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime, stay high through the night, and then settle back down when it’s time to wake up.
In our modern society, however, most of us stay up many hours past sunset and would probably sleep in many hours after sunrise if we could. And the trouble is that your melatonin levels may still be high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, which leads to grogginess(头晕眼花). It may also have other health consequences as well, such as diabetes(糖尿病), overweight problems and heart disease
Professor Kenneth P. Wright of the University of Colorado in the US wanted to see if our body clocks can be reset by a short stay in nature. His team recruited (招收)14 physically active volunteers in their 20s and 30s. Nine went on a weekend camping trip, while the other five stayed home. At the end of the weekend, the researchers reported that in just two days, the campers’ body clocks had shifted so that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip. By contrast, the body clocks of the group that stayed home shifted even later over the course of the weekend. “This tells us we can reset our clocks fast,” Wright said.
Therefore, if you want to change your sleep patterns you could try to increase your exposure to natural light during the day and decrease the amount of artificial light you see at night.

Dear SirMadam,
I ordered a set of Harry Potter series on your website two weeks ago, but I didn’t receive them until yesterday. Much to my disappointment, the books were so poorly packed up that the cover of one book was torn; and to make matters worse, it is not a complete set, as I found one book missing.
I’m sorry to have received such poor service, and I believe I have every right to ask you to deal with this problem; so I hope that you either return my money or deliver a new set of books to me.
Looking forward to your reply.
概要写作:
A new study shows that outdoor camping can reset a person’s circadian clock and improve sleep. (要点1)The circadian clock, an internal system, schedules your sleeping time guided by the amount of melatonin. (要点2)But people’s irregular sleeping habit disturbs the rise and fall of melatonin, which causes tiredness and diseases. (要点3)Wright’s experiment proved that our clocks can be reset. (要点4)So we’d better expose ourselves to natural light more in the daytime and artificial light less in the evening. (要点5)
